Twitter has pretty reasonable limitations built in, I forget what it is, maybe 60 posts per hour over an hour, maybe more I really do forget.

How can you limit the # of tweets? Really, simply. Take the most popular forums, turn the tweet ability off. Go into the forum settings, turn the auto-tweet ability off per forum. Things like the "chat forum" or "general discussion", etc don't need to be tweeted, do they? Enter self regulation there.

I agree, it might be a good idea to add this option manually, but until you do, it could be done like that.

that doesnt help, after that time, It post like hell.

Since I have my tweeter and facebook account integrated, facebook changed me the password for security reason, even they got scared :)

I changed to once a day, to see how will work, but I am kind of scared.

There should be a way to limit the number of tweets every hour, day, minutes, that way this hack will be prefect!

Twitter has a limit of 150 api call in an hour, I advise you to switch off the manual tweeting, and leave the tweeting of hot threads only, so you will receive more traffic for the most attractive threads in a given period (24 hours or may be less if your forums are very busy).

Having the topic itself bleed into the message is rather ugly and leads to cut off tweets. The only thing that's really needed is the title of the thread

I dont get step 3 3) *Optional* go to http://bit.ly/ and register an account there, you need it to shorten the URLs!
There are two important values here: the login username and the apiKey (you can obtain it from http://bit.ly/account/)

The plugin uses bit.ly to shorten urls. What they're saying there is pretty straightforward. Go there, follow instructions, and enter in the information.

You don't WANT your full url posted to twitter, it'll take up way too much space, which is why services like bit.ly exist.

everything url related is shorted. It will turn http://www.chattaboxforums.com/showthread.php?t=123455315 into something like http://www.bit.ly/abcdefgh

Any thread it tweets will be shortened.

Ok..I can only seem to get the working if I run the task manually. For some reason my scheduled tasks don't seem to be running properly.

Like now some of the scheduled tasks say there run time is 8.55Am today But it's already past that time and the tasks don't seem to be updating

make sure that your footer has the cron link, if you don't know how to do that, just revert the footer.

Very Nice Mod, its working great on my site. What I would love to see though is a way to do a different Prefix depending on the forum that it is coming from. (Basically I am using it for announcements for servers for a hosting company, each server has its own forum).
Also I would like it to just post the title of the thread instead of also adding in the 1st part of the post.

It's saying the file doesn't exist. Is there a file called OAuth.php in your forum/includes/twitterposter/twitteroauth directory? If not, the files weren't uploaded properly. Upload the files again and reinstall the modification, making sure you select overwrite when installing the plugin.

installed all the files in their appropriate folders... admincp, clientscripts,includes

uploaded product -- then got Myql error 1060 which I proceeded to repair.

Tried to upload product again-- successful

Registered APP--- sucessful

Copy/pasted "Consumer Secret" and "consumer key" ----- (same error message from last time)

then............. ALLOW

Followed these steps:
"Q: I'm not seeing any updates after the one "#vBulletin Tweet Poster by http://services.milado.net/ Hello World! #testoauth".
A: Please make sure that you have new threads in forums available to guests, otherwise the hack won't post anything.
After that go to Admincp -> Scheduled Tasks -> Scheduled Task Manager, then find the task "vBulletin Tweet Poster" click run and see if there is any error displayed."


guests were always able to view new threads and there were no error messages

lol. any ideas why it is pulling threads from 3 weeks ago? Yes---everything is set correctly and it is set to default 24hours. Even when they do grab the threads, they don't prefix them with 'HOT:'.

New posts work great. Some of the time.

Those that have issues with the images showing up, they are only in the FIRST post.

I'll keep it installed, hopefully all the kinks get worked out.

Something I've just run across.

Every once in a blue moon, one of the members posts a duplicate of an existing post. Instead of deleting it, we normally merge the post/thread with the original. This breaks the link that has gone out over Twitter.

I don't suppose there's an easy fix to this, huh? :D

I like the modification. It works fine and I will be keeping it around for the future. However, I have a comment and a group of question.

I would like to tweet a few posts in the middle of some threads. I wish that I could do that manually but without using the form in the footer. However, I understand your reluctance to make anything that can be mistaken as a spam tool.

I don't understand how the form in the footer is supposed to work, although it does function.

1. Placing a URL in the bottom line and clicking Shorten seems to do nothing. Is it supposed to? Or does that line at the bottom have some other function? When I did tweet using the form and put the URL in the text box, the URL was shortened, but did that have anything to do with me pushing the "Shorten" button?
2. The character count doesn't work reliably. It sort of works once you add a period at the end of a sentence, but people don't always use periods in tweets. It works if you backspace/delete and then add a space at the cursor. Otherwise, no.

@Milad: Very impressive work here sir! I was going to implement on my big board but I noticed someone about 7 pages ago said it cannot be easily uninstalled. Was curious if you have an uninstaller solution? Like currently are the extra database tables removed on uninstall etc? If all that has to be done manually can you post instructions?

The hack can be uninstalled easily, like any other hack, just uninstall the product, and it will delete all the changes made to the database,

I did get it after i uploaded / imported the addon.
After i tried with "override addon" the timeout error doesn't come...

But now, i have another problem.
I tweeted few threads manually and it works fine.
But now, if i try to tweet couple new threads i became the error msg box "failed"

where is the problem???? how can i fix it?

i can see, that i get the "failed" msg box if i try to tweet threads which got characters like ! { . [ / - in the thread title...

I see no reason to delete a tweet in the first place, if you want retweet yourself, and it's normal for a thread to look like a tweeted thread because there is no feedback from twitter on deleting a tweet.

2. write a thread with title = min. 15 characters
3. the first post msg in the thread is an img attachment upload

u will see, that ur addon tweet not perfect, while the shorten bit.ly url is cut down and non linked. try it u will see!

thats why we have to delete the tweet on twitter manually, because the shorten link was cut off!

After we try to re-tweet the thread -> there is no way!

I'm getting authorization failed also i keep getting a nul is not nul or an object on the twitterposter.js so i don't know whats happening on the javascript front.

Confirmed, threads in my test forum are being pulled every 24 days rather than hours. I imagine this is because the code in twitterposter_hot.php reads:

$vbulletin->options['twitter_hot_timespan'] = TIMENOW - ($vbulletin->options['twitter_hot_timespan'] * 86400);

As a work around until Milad fixes you could set Hot Threads Look up Time Span = 1(for 24 hrs) in the admincp control for this plugin.

Trying to authorize this app since yesterday now, always:

I had this installed on 3 forums with no issues, then I went to install it on #4 and I got the error you did.

The only solution I found was uninstalling it, but it would not completely uninstall. It keep items in the SQL DB so I manually deleted them then installed it once again from scratch and went through it all again with success.

So I think those getting this error are not getting a complete 100% install and must do what I found above to fix it.

I was reading this article and thought it would be great if the mod could be altered so Retweeting is easier as explained in the article.

You're wrong, you've made your twitter application as a desktop client, you have to make it as a browser program.

There is a field in the thread table called tweet_screen_name, drop it before re-install the product. un-installation code for this field was added in the next version.

I have a problem..

All installed fine, got the test twitter message and nothing else. Checked all forums have twitter enables and are guest viewable. Check all usergroups and saved. Run scheduled task and get:

No thread has been fetched from the database!

There are new threads but they dont go to twitter.

Ugh... It's been a long 2 weeks and this is the last issue I'm beating my head on the desk with.

We had a catastrophic drive failure on our box (actually TWO drives failed) so we decided to move to a dedicated box where we were the only "tenant".

I have cURL and OpenSSL compiled into the installation, and port 443 shows open when checked. Yet, when attempting to input the Consumer and Secret Key I receive the following error:

Can't reach twitter, either the port 443 is closed by a firewall, you didn't enter the correct Consumer Key and Consumer Secret values, or you don't have openSSL complied to your PHP installation.

As far as I can tell, Twitter isn't down. Port 443 is open, and I'm using copy/paste for the keys. Before I start drawing blood by beating my head on the desk, I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to procede.

I had the script working at one point but as it was sending out tweets every 10 minutes (which is awesome!) I didn't want my followers getting annoyed with that and petentially unfollowing myself.

So what I did was I created a new account just for the script and now it's not working at all. I have changed all the twitter stuff too so I don't really see what the problem could be.

Any ideas guys?

Egads I had to click EDIT on EVERY SINGLE USERGROUP in my list (I have around 30) and then save them until it started working. Although when it prcessed HOT threads, it says there are 250-some but it only publishes a couple at a time to Twitter when I run the scheduled task. I would have thought it might have dumped all 250-some at once. Is this how it is supposed to work??

Firstly you have some horrendous css problems on your site, it might help if you fix those. You are using vB 3.8.4 but the copyright is missing (bound to give you problems with cron jobs), the manual tweet is for super admins only "Show Fast Tweeting Form in the Footer for Super Admins" is the option, you have to set yourself as super admin in the includes/config.php in your forum files on the server and change the line below to include your userid

$config['SpecialUsers']['superadministrators'] = '1';

i installed the vbseo 3.5 new version on 14 Feb 2010 after that the vBulletin Tweet Poster 1.0.6 is not making any posts posted on the twitter.com before it the vBulletin Tweet Poster 1.0.6 was successfully working.

i checked all step of vBulletin Tweet Poster 1.0.6 but every thing going ok even i checked the authorization it is also successful and check the below authorization message :

You are using vB 3.8.4 but the copyright is missing (bound to give you problems with cron jobs), the manual tweet is for super admins only "Show Fast Tweeting Form in the Footer for Super Admins" is the option, you have to set yourself as super admin in the includes/config.php in your forum files on the server and change the line below to include your userid

$config['SpecialUsers']['superadministrators'] = '1';

The person who developed the skin for us (Miner Skinz) supposedly went through our site and fixed everything up and we even ran the site against some WC3 tester utlility and it came back fine. If you are seeing a problem please let me know what it is and how to fix it. :)

I've vBSEO and tweet poster both installed on my forum, and the tweet poster works perfectly! I don't see any reason why it would be affected by vBSEO!

i checked ur forum ( http://www.syrianmeds.net/forum/ ) and u have vbseo 3.2.0 installed but i have installed new version of vbseo 3.5.0 so after new version installion the Tweet Poster 1.0.6 working stopped.

so now what i do for that which is re-again working start ?

I'm sorry, I can't provide further help on this, you have to contact the style author and ask him to provide proper original hooks in his styles.

yesterday i contacted with vbseo team for vBulletin Tweet Poster problem and they said :

We cannot officially support other add-ons. It looks like the mod author has created special vbseo support in 1.0.2 (beta) that likely needs to be updated on their end to match our new version.

I fixed the problem with it not working with vbseo 3.5. It was an easy fix.

in includes/twitterposter/functions_twitterposter.php

change this line in function initialize_vbseo()


require_once(DIR . '/includes/functions_vbseo.php');


to:


require_once(DIR . '/vbseo/includes/functions_vbseo.php');


vbSEO changed the structure of where the files are in 3.5. This hack couldn't find the file it needed. Once you change that line it will work.
