What this is and does

LDM is a general-purpose tool for managing libraries of links and files, and handling uploads and downloads in a flexible way, while tracking and control user access. It has a range of integrated media players and a large library of 'plugin' extras.

Installation and Usage Explained in the on-line Wiki (http://www.eirma.org/wikis/index.php/Links_and_Downloads_Manager), with a brief explanation in the file instructions.txt in the release zip.

Please use carefully and always backup your database before upgrading. Post reports of problems and suggestions for enhancements in this thread. You can also find extensive discussion of this mod in the VB3.7 mods section.

14.06.09 Version 2.3.0 is the the officially-supported version. Works with 3.7 and vb 3.8.

14.02.10 Post-1 version uploaded with minor bug fixes, including dealing with PHP 5.2.12

Staff Note: Sadly, Andrew D, the developer of the Links and Downloads Manager has passed away after a long period of illness.

swfuploader

There is a bug in the swfuploader extra, which breaks the extra if your forums directory is called something other than "forum". To fix this bug, edit the links_swfuploader_header_one template, find the line that reads:

flash_url : "/forum/clientscript/swfupload/swfupload.swf",

and change to

flash_url : "{$vbulletin->options[bburl]}/clientscript/swfupload/swfupload.swf",

Andrew,

When I try to import the Search Module I get an error that states that I don't have permissions for /admincp/vba_cmps_admin.php

I can continue and the Search Module is on my page but when I use the search form it states that a security token is missing.

Thank you AndrewD. Does this version include the option to upload and store files by their real name?

Thank you AndrewD. Does this version include the option to upload and store files by their real name?

There is an 'extra' (upload-filenames) which does the best it can - not all filemames can be preserved 100%.

I can continue and the Search Module is on my page but when I use the search form it states that a security token is missing.

I can't reproduce this, but I imagine you have an old version of the ldm_search.php file in your forums/modules directory. Check, and if necessary delete this file, then reinstall. Let me know if you still have problems.

Andrew,

Thanks for the help. I woke up this AM and had an epiphany and it turned out that what had happened was that my ldm_ templates were custom for all my child styles. I had uploaded the latest version of your Search Module and it overwrote ldm_search.php but I had only selected my parent style to install the updated templates (assuming the children styles would inherit the new templates).

As soon as I reverted the templates of the children styles the search box worked.

Again, thank you for an excellent product.

Thanks very mush for the update !

I have change the serveur and some links doesn't works now. For exemple an ancien link :

/00. dossier a/02. dossier/Audio/audio n° 02.mp3

I must to change for :

/00. dossier a/02. dossier/Audio/audio n° 01.mp3

Must I add the caracter  on the sames links or there is a solution ?

This problem is because I have change the server.

Have all files changed name in a consistent way during the change of server? (For example, do all the files now have names with n° instead of n??) If so, you can do a bulk update of your entries' filenames. Go to the LDM admin/mass edit page. Select the 'mass edit' link on the same line as "select all" and "select all entries on all pages".

On the next page, select "select all entries on all pages" checkbox and "Edit" radio button. Then, in the find and replace boxes put the following:

Find : #n?#
Replace: #n°#

Be careful - you can do damage to your LDM database if you get these wrong.

If the new names are not consistent, then I don't think you have any choice but to go through one entry at a time.

Thanks very mush. I have a lot of categories with audio named ***n°** ....

I don't understand why when the script search an audio in a categorie, the caractere "Â " is add.

I will see my hebergeur if there is an othere solution, maybe the encoding, and there is a reglage, I don't really know ......

Hello,

I upgraded from 2.2.9 and set to overwrite. It only shows a white page now.

Installed it again and now it ignores the CSS for all styles?

Edit: seems to be related to another optimising hack and caching styles.

There is a full change log on the wiki. It's far too long to post here. :)

The LDM templates do undergo regular changes. It's not really feasible to provide lists of changes.

AndrewD,

i guess i'm not the first to have problems with swfuploader extra. i tried to install it on my test forum and it doesn't seem to work at all. i mean, i see "browse" button in the add entry form but it doesn't press. actually, it does press in msie6 but does nothing. it doesn't even press in firefox. i suspected there's a problem with my browser but when i tried swfuploader demo at their site it worked. i see no settings for this extra plugin so there's nothing i could have misset. multi-upload is turned off. if i turn this extra off and upload files the old hard way everything's ok so it's not permission or any other problem. what can be wrong?

Sorry to hear of this problem. I've had one or two reports of difficulties with swfuploader, but I think they were all sorted out.

If the "browse" button is there but not doing anything, it suggests that one or more of the swfuploader files is missing or corrupted. Take a look on your site in the forum/clientscript/swfupload directory. There should be five files:

swfupload.swf - 13kb
swfupload.js - 38kb
swfupload.queue.js - 4kb
handlers.js - 7kb
fileprogress.js - 7kb

With firefox, it's worth installing the Firebug addon (from the firefox site). That way, if there is a problem with one of the javascript files, it will give you a warning down in the bottom right corner of the browser. By clicking on that warning, you should get a more detailed error message.

AndrewD,

thanks for the firebug tip, i never knew such a great tool existed. i've been able to find the problem with button, it appears that there's a line containing relative path to the actual flash object in links_swfuploader_header_one template and somehow this line was set to "/forum/clientscript/swfupload/swfupload.swf". i adjusted it for my setup and flash object begun working but there's a new problem now, after pressing submit button the local_links_actions.php just gives out blank screen. there's nothing in error_log and it appears that the problem may be somehow linked to file size: it successfully added 14kb gif but choked after uploading 0.5mb and 5mb jpegs.

AndrewD,

oopsie, it seems this bug is not actually yours. first i tried to upload 4.7 mb zip archive and it worked just fine and then i tried to upload smaller picture and it also worked. the final test was with that 5mb jpeg (12 mpix 2848x4288) but with optional thumbnail image (small one) filled in and it also worked. hence my conclusion: it seems that the problem is in ImageMagick that chokes on large images while trying to make thumbnails.

AndrewD,

There's a line containing relative path to the actual flash object in links_swfuploader_header_one template and somehow this line was set to "/forum/clientscript/swfupload/swfupload.swf".

Ouch, sorry about that. Will fix in the next upload.

AndrewD,
It seems that the problem is in ImageMagick that chokes on large images while trying to make thumbnails.

By default, LDM uses the GD image package (even if you are using imagemagick elsewhere). GD has a serious problem with making thumbnails from large files - I found once that it used over 50Mb memory to process a 5Mb image.

There is a new add on with version 2.3.0 so that LDM will use ImageMagick instead of GD. You may want to give this a try (test-newimagecode). The intention is to make this standard with the next release.

Please help. I've spent three days off and on pulling my hair out! I'm trying to get the hit parade to show the most popular entries and newest entries for *ALL* categories combined. One list, but it pulls data from every category.

It is only showing it from one category. So...to explain... on my main downloads page (the root of downloads) it shows the hit parade next to the entire category list, but the hit parade is only for one particular category --- not all of them combined.

I for the life of me cannot find where to control this or where I have set this.

Live hit parade on root:

The hit parade list is all from this one category:

Please help before I go completely mad!

Happy to help, Mike. It will be easiest for me if I can do a bit of debugging on your site to find out where the error is happening. Would you send me a PM with details of an account with full vb admin privs (i.e. the ability to access the vb acp and install plugins).

If I add a new user group to vbulletin and base the usergroups permissions of an existing usergroup, then that has an unwanted effect on LDM permissions. LDM categories inherit permissions from associated/parent forums. But in this situation categories inherit a no-permission from their associated/parent forums.

Even once global permissions for the new usergroup are added to LDM, the associated/parent forums still cause a no-permission.

Hey Andrew,

Hope you might be able to help. I've reverted all templates in the new version but it seems to not come out how previous versions appear. I looked in the default VB but it still has the same effect.

http://www.unofficialmills.co.uk/communities/local_links.php?catid=39

All the text descriptions are aligned right.

Also why are the hit parade titles shortened? Is there a setting for this? http://www.unofficialmills.co.uk/communities/local_links.php

Finally on the jukebox is it possible to remove the box surrounding the description?

http://www.unofficialmills.co.uk/communities/local_links.php?catid=39

I think you've got the LDM admin setting link_imagesize set to 500. LDM attempts to grab the cover art from mp3 files and show it as the entry's image, scaled to link_imagesize pixels and placed in a cell at the left side of the entry bit. For some reason, it is actually displaying blank images for your mp3 files, but these are still occupying the 500pixel box, and this is what is pushing your text to the right.

Also why are the hit parade titles shortened? Is there a setting for this? http://www.unofficialmills.co.uk/communities/local_links.php

Another user requested this. You can modify LDM admin setting length_shortname to change the cutoff

Finally on the jukebox is it possible to remove the box surrounding the description?

You need to modify the links_playbit template. There's a sequence that reads

<tr>
<td colspan="3" align="center">
<fieldset class="fieldset">
<legend>$linktypebit $linkurljump</legend>
$linkdesc
</fieldset>

You can change this to, e.g.,

<tr>
<td colspan="3" align="center">
$linktypebit $linkurljump
$linkdesc
</fieldset>

If I understand you, your report is correct. Currently, when new usergroups are added, LDM treats the usergroup as having no access permissions at all. You have to go to LDM admin permissions to give the new group the permissions you want. I may rethink this with vb4.0.

The problem is that LDM keeps using inherited permissions it cant find. If I add a new usergroup, then I need to add permissions to LDM for it. This is managable.
However, in the categories that inherit their permissions these permissions are overridden.
LDM can't find the forum permissions of the new usergroup and therefore it overrides these categories with no-permission for the new usergroup. It is possible to correct each setting of each category, but I can find no solution to correct a mass of categories at once.

If you are running version 2.3.0, both the ldm/admin/permissions and ldm/admin/settings have a "view all category overrides" link in the top right of the page. The link takes you to a new page which allows you to selectively eliminate these overrides.

There was a bug which causes unwanted inherited overrides but I think it is corrected in 2.3.0.

In LDM_new a number is displayed after each name, to denote the number of hits. how do I remove this?

In ldm_new_thumb: Is there anyway to display the file title under the thumb?

I would like to show off my video directory on a vba portal with ldm_new_media.
Is it possible to set a cut-off date for ldm_new_media?
Is there any way to play vp6 flv videos?
Many of my videos can not be played embedded in LDM. ldm_new_media therefore only shows the titles of these videos. Is there any way to have ldm_new_media ignore videos that can not be displayed?
If some videos are not displayed, then the JWH player videos that are displayed are blown up to fill all available space, instead of the set pixel size. I am not 100% sure that the absence of video thumbs is the cause.

Is there a way to have the text $linkimglink move to a new line if it is longer than X characters? Similar to done on youtube here (http://www.youtube.com/comedy).

Bit difficult for me to do anything about this. I think there must be more than a conflict with Two Step links. The javascript in the warning message must be coming from somewhere - not in LDM and I don't think it's in Two Step links either.

In LDM_new a number is displayed after each name, to denote the number of hits. how do I remove this?

In template adv_portal_custom_ldm_new_one remove the line:
<div style="float:right"><span class="smallfont">$linkhits</span></div>

In ldm_new_thumb: Is there anyway to display the file title under the thumb?

In template adv_portal_custom_ldm_new_thumb_one, immediately before the <else /> line, insert
<div class="smallfont">$linkshortname</div>

Is it possible to set a cut-off date for ldm_new_media?

Requires a code edit to forum/modules/ldm_new_media.php.

Find the line:
$order = "linkdate DESC ";

Immediately after, insert:

$cutoff = TIMENOW - 24*60*60*$GLOBALS['links_defaults']['days_seen_on_portal'];
$filter[] = "link.linkdate>$cutoff";

This will cause the module to use your LDM admin setting *days_seen_on_portal* as cutoff. If you want to use a different value, change $GLOBALS['links_defaults']['days_seen_on_portal'] to the required number of days, e.g. set it to 10.

Is there any way to play vp6 flv videos?

I downloaded a test vp6 video (https://flix.on2.com/samples/on2tm_640.flv) and installed it in LDM. It plays fine through the JW player, both via the jukebox and inline. However, there seem to be a series of debates/problem reports on the longtail video site about problems with vp6 flash videos and the JW player.

Many of my videos can not be played embedded in LDM. ldm_new_media therefore only shows the titles of these videos. Is there any way to have ldm_new_media ignore videos that can not be displayed?

What type of video cannot be played embedded in LDM?

thank you! Thats a lot of improvements I have now implemented.

None of my vp6 videos are playing. Adding the testvideo url as an entry does not give an embedded video, but a link to the file. Do I need to add a new filetype for vp6? Or do I need to change a setting to get vp6 playing? I have no clue why its not playing at all.

What type of video cannot be played embedded in LDM?
vp6, dailymotion, livevideo and liveleak videos do not play embedded for me.

??
In ldm_new_media or ldm_hot_media latest or popular videos can be displayed. They play embedded on the vba portal page. Some videos do not play embedded, so only a title is displayed. The videos that do play embedded show up very large. As if the size is set to 100%. How and where do I set the size of the video player to a maximum limit?

For my video categories, I am using the fotoalbum linkbit. I have installed the JW Player extensions. How do I enable videos to play inline in the fotoalbum linkbit?

That does not work for me.

About 10% of my videos that do play embedded on the jukebox, do not display a thumb. Is there anyway to generate these?

Do you know where I can find icons for file extensions? I am in need of: .djvu .mol .torrent .mpg

I'm running into a blank white page issue on local_links.php, but only when there is a child forum for whatever category I'm viewing. For instance, Home category works fine until I add a category, and that added category is fine until I add a child to it, at which point it turns into a blank page.

I checked out the other issues in your mods' threads, but those blank page issues didn't seem to be like mine. I'm running vB 3.8.2 (and LDM 2.3.0, I might add), plus I've disabled all other modifications and reverted to the default style, but the problem still persists. No one else seems to be having any trouble, so it's probably something to do with my setup... Any suggestions on where to start? :)

Thanks in advance, and amazing mod by the way!

UPDATE #1: When I disable the Category Display from the Settings page, local_links.php starts working, so it appears that it's just something to do with that. I tried both tabular and brief, and neither allows anything but a blank page.

UPDATE #2: It seems that uploading an entry to a category also causes that category (which was previous working) to mess up. Looks like for whatever reason, my cat and entry bits cause things to go wonky...

Hey Andrew,

I need the variable for entry links that are in links_linkbit (Modern Template).

Right now I can only use $linkurljump which contains both title and url, but I only need the URL and not the title.
i tried $linkurllink, but it didn't help. it's an empty varible.
Is there a variable to differentiate between Entry titles and urls?

Thank you

Sorry to hear this. Blank pages are usually caused by one of three problems - a) code bugs; b) faulty code file uploads; and c) resource limits. As you've turned off other mods and no-one else has reported a problem, a) seems the least likely. You can check b) by going to LDM/admin/check file versions, which carries out an integrity check on all the code files. Which leaves c). A common problem is insufficient memory. Two checks here - go to LDM/Admin and take a look at the memory_limit value in your php settings (down the left hand side). If this is less than 12M or so, that might be the problem.

One way to check this (assuming your server configuration allows it) is to create a plugin to allow you to use more memory. Go to vb/admincp/products and plugins/add new plugin, and create a new plugin with the following settings:

hook location: global_start
title: debug
plugin php code: ini_set('memory_limit', '16M');
active: yes

If the memory limit is the problem, you should ask your host provider to change the default limit to, e.g., 16M or 24M.

Am happy to take a look at your board if you need further help, but will require full admin access.

The raw url is stored in $linkurl, but this is probably not what you are after. If you want the masked url that allows LDM to keep file locations secret and track hits, you need to create a plugin, as follows:

hook location: ldm_linkbit_create

code:

$linkmaskurl = ldm_seo_url("jump", $linkcatid, $linkid);

Andrew, you're amazing. It's one thing to see you helping everyone else, but for some reason I'm still blown away that I'm getting the same attention from you. Truly, you are a gentleman.

The memory limit is actually 128M, so I'm guessing that's not it. As for the other suggestion, I couldn't find any links or settings for "check file versions" on the LDM admin page... maybe I'm just being a dolt though.

Anyhow, I'll send you admin login credentials for the dev site, but don't worry about spending too much time on it. I'd way rather use your download manager, but worst-case-scenario, I can fall back on the less-featured DownloadsII

Thanks again!

How come I get this message when I try to access the links page:

S**, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.

Sorry to hear this. Reasons for blank pages are explained in the wiki, see http://www.eirma.org/wikis/index.php/Common_Problems. The standard settings for a secure web server turn off/disable error reporting, which leads to blank screens.

Let me know if you can't easily resolve this. Am happy to help if you give me access to your site.

Have you changed any of the default LDM permissions (LDM/admin/permissions)? Or have you added extra usergroups to your board - you will need to give those groups LDM access permissions.

I'm evaluating DownloadsII but may want to check out LDM as well. Can both mods be installed to the same vBulletin forum or does this present a problem? Also, I am hosted on an IIS server. Does this present any problems? Are there any security settings I'd need to have to change for directories?

As I said, I'm presently trying DownloadsII. Can't get it working and am waiting for a reply by the author so thought I'd give LDM a try in the mean time. One area of concern I have with LDM is that I have to change the permissions on the downloads directory making it writeable and executable (chmod 777). Can't do this via FTP on an IIS server so I'm having to ask my host to do it for me. But one poster in the DownloadsII thread remarked that this looked like a huge security hole. I don't know enough about web server security to have an opinion on that. What are your thoughts? Does LDM have a similar requirement?

Thanks!

As far as I know, there is no difficulty in having both mods installed on the same board.

As you say, the directory(ies) in which uploaded files are stored has to be writable by the web server. This should not need 777 permissions and should not create a huge security hole.

Concerning security in general, there is always some trade off between this and functionality. I've written some guidance notes in the wiki, see http://www.eirma.org/wikis/index.php/Speed,_Security_and_Server_Load.

Concerning IIS, the only problem that has been reported is when PHP is running in CGI mode. In this case, it's necessary to make a small code change, again described in the wiki at http://www.eirma.org/wikis/index.php/Site_Configuration

Yes.

There are two versions of the uploader included in the release. The default version (installed when you run the normal install process) does not include a progress bar. In the "extras/swfuploader" directory, the alternative uploader replaces the default by one with a progress bar.

I just installed LDM onto my vBulletin site and when I go to the admin control panel the Links and Downloads Manager configuration menu is visible in the left pane. So the install definitely completed. However, when I click on any link in the menu or point my browser to local_links_admin.php I get "Internet Explorer cannot display page" in the left pane with IE8, and "Content Encoding Error - The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression" with Firefox.

I'm running on an IIS server. According to my web host server isn't running in CGI mode (I don't really know what that means but their answer to the question was "no". Any idea what the problem might be?

Hi Andrew,

In order to do some search engine optimization I had to edit /includes/local_links_include.php file (around $atag and ldm_seo function) to get the default links to look like: local_links.php?catit=01&catname=xx&linkid=01&linkname=xx (adding trimmed catName and linkName)

is there anyway to create a plugin for LDM to do this instead? (to prevent having to edit this file manually after each update)

Thanks a lot

I have had no report of this error in five years :)

It looks as if one of the uploaded files may be corrupt. Try the following:

- Go to the regular vb admincp/vb optiobs/cookies and http header options, and disable the gzip compresion option (GZIP HTML Output = no). Try again with local_links_admin.php

- Try loading local_links.php

- Try reuploading all the files

With the current code, this would be difficult, because there is no "hook" at the relevant place to tie in a plugin. If you send me (PM) details of the code changes you have made, I will see where to add a hook.

Did you consider that LDM's own seo options were not adequate?

Well, mom always said I was the special one. :)

It looks as if one of the uploaded files may be corrupt. Try the following:
- Go to the regular vb admincp/vb optiobs/cookies and http header options, and disable the gzip compresion option (GZIP HTML Output = no). Try again with local_links_admin.php
OK, when I do this and go to local_links_admin.php my normal page layout is displayed (example (http://www.SpellQuizzer.com/Community)), only with the LDM admin CP in it (I think). Furthermore, the following error is displayed at the top of the page:
Notice: Use of undefined constant E_STRICT - assumed 'E_STRICT' in (server path to web root)\community\local_links_admin.php on line 22
You can see a picture of it here (http://www.spellquizzer.com/LDM_CP.png). If I turn GZIP HTML Output back on I'm back to the page not loading at all as if there were a connection problem.

- Try loading local_links.php
This page loads properly whether I have GZIP HTML Output set to yes or no. All the LDM links on the page work except for the local_links_admin.php link. That's the only page I've found (so far) that is having a problem.

- Try reuploading all the files
I tried that and no change.

Am happy to take a look at your site if you want.
I'm fine with that. How would we go about it?

Some additional information:
According to View PHP Info in the vB Admin CP, I'm running php 4.4.7. Additional info displayed:
System : Windows NT LUNADALTXUSWH0 5.2 build 3790
Build Date: May 4 2007 13:29:21
Server API: ISAPI
Virtual Directory Support: enabled
Configuration File (php.ini) Path (not going to display this)\php.ini
PHP API : 20020918
PHP Extension: 20020429
Zend Extension: 20050606
Debug Build : no
Zend Memory Manager: enabled
Thread Safety: enabled
Registered PHP Streams: php, http, ftp, compress.zlib

Again, this is on an IIS server that is not running in CGI mode (according to my web host). Everything else in vBulletin appears to be working properly.

I Googled the error message and found this (http://www.php.net/manual/en/ref.errorfunc.php#62122). Does LDM require PHP 5 by chance?

Just to see what would happen I changed line 22 hard-coding 2048 in place of the constant E_STRICT. After doing this AND turning off GZIP HTML the admin page loads though it is displayed on my normal forum template, not in the normal gray vBulletin Admin CP layout. It's odd seeing my site's theme in the right pane when using the Admin CP. Is that normal? Should I consider this the solution to the problem? I really don't know what difference the GZIP HTML option makes (we aren't talking about a large active forum here though I do expect to have some large file uploading and downloading taking place soon).

Interesting - and thanks. I don't get many reports from sites using IIS.

I can't recall why I added the E_STRICT test in that file - it's not used in any other file. So, either hard code the value or get rid of the sequence "& E_STRICT" altogether. You will not create problems. I realise that this created a need for php5, which is presumably why you had the problem.

Otherwise, LDM does not need php 5 - it is happy with the same versions of php/mysql as the rest of vb, as far as I know.

The gzip option tells vb to send info to the browser in a compressed form. This reduces bandwidth, but it has the nasty side effect of creating difficult-to-trace problems if something goes wrong.

What you are seeing on your vb admincp with the ldm admin pages is correct. Way back when LDM was first being written, it was not straightforward to integrate hacks into the admincp, so I decided to have an independent admin page, styled according to the rest of the board. Later on, it became possible to do the integration, but by that time I had written too much admin code to go back and redesign it.

AndrewD,

thanks for the firebug tip, i never knew such a great tool existed. i've been able to find the problem with button, it appears that there's a line containing relative path to the actual flash object in links_swfuploader_header_one template and somehow this line was set to "/forum/clientscript/swfupload/swfupload.swf". i adjusted it for my setup and flash object begun working but...
I had this EXACT same problem! I'm sure glad you posted this because there's no way I would have thought to look in the templates for hard-coded paths like that. I edited the links_swfuploader_header_one template hard-coding the path to the correct location in my site and now it works.

If I had used "forums" as my forum directory I would not have run into this. It's because I used a different directory name that I got bit by this bug. I suspect that most people just go with the default "forums" name for their forum directory. That's why there aren't a lot more reports of this bug.

Thanks for all the help so far. I'm almost there but I have a bunch of questions still now that I've got it working. I'm using LDM only for uploading and downloading files. No links and no streaming data (music, videos, etc.). I don't want any mention of links on the site - just uploads and downloads.

How can I change the string in the Search menu from "Search Links/Downloads" to "Search Downloads"?
How can I change the "Add Entry" link on the Category page to "Upload a File"?
How can I change the bold, red "[Value Required]"string on the Add Entry page to non-bold, red "(required)"?
How can I change the "Name" label on the Add Entry page to "List Name"?
How can I change the "No file/url specified" error label to "No file specified"?
How can I remove the "Parent Categories" area on Add Entry page?
How can I remove the "Parent Forum" area on Add Entry page?
How can I remove the "Display Order" area on Add Entry page (or is this only displayed to admins)?
How can I remove the "Hide Entry" area on Add Entry page (or is this only displayed to admins)?
How can I remove the "If used, leave URL field blank" label on the Add Entry page?
On the Add Entry page, I don't want the "Submitted By" value to be editable. It should be the userID of the person adding the list. Is this only editable by an admin? If so, then it's no problem.

Now for the slightly bigger issue. I can't figure out where my uploads are being stored. I don't want them stored on the web site where they can be linked to directly so I set local_file_root set to "Yes" (it is displayed as set to "Server" in the Environment box), local_file_root_prefix set to "/LDM" and upload_dir set to "/Downloads". I believe I have LDM configured to create the directory though I can't find the setting now. I've uploaded two files and downloaded them from the site. Yet I can't find the directory that they are being stored in. From my settings I would think there would be a "LDM/Downloads" directory just below the wwwroot directory of my site (I'm on an IIS server and am not sure I'm using the right terminology here). The files must be getting saved somewhere but I can't figure out where.

The directory structure on the server and the location of the webs is thus:
c:\Websites\MySite.com\
The actual web site files are all located in the wwwroot directory on top of that path. So, my forum would be located at:
c:\Websites\MySite.com\wwwroot\forum\

The above structure being the case, I was expecting my uploaded files to be placed in the following directory:
c:\Websites\MySite.com\LDM\Downloads\
Where am I going wrong?

No links and no streaming data (music, videos, etc.). I don't want any mention of links on the site - just uploads and downloads.

The following texts are set/changed using vbulletin phrases (vb/admincp/languages and phrases), as marked below:

How can I change the string in the Search menu from "Search Links/Downloads" to "Search Downloads"? phrase ldm_vbmenu_search
How can I change the "Add Entry" link on the Category page to "Upload a File"? ll_menu_addlink
How can I change the "Name" label on the Add Entry page to "List Name"? ll_name
How can I change the "No file/url specified" error label to "No file specified"? ll_error_urlnull
How can I remove the "If used, leave URL field blank" label on the Add Entry page? ll_uploadinfo

The master phrase file is provided in the /development/phrases subdirectory of the zip file - you can look through there to find the correspondence between other phrases and phrase names.

The following requires a template edit and a phrase edit:

How can I change the bold, red "[Value Required]"string on the Add Entry page to non-bold, red "(required)"?

a) Edit the template links_addentity and find the sequence:
<span class="highlight smallfont">[$vbphrase[ll_value_required]]</span>
Change to
($vbphrase[ll_value_required])
b) Edit the phrase ll_value_required

The following depend on LDM permissions (LDM/admin/permissions)

How can I remove the "Parent Categories" area on Add Entry page? can_select_category permission
How can I remove the "Parent Forum" area on Add Entry page? can_set_permissions
How can I remove the "Display Order" area on Add Entry page (or is this only displayed to admins)? can_set_display_order
How can I remove the "Hide Entry" area on Add Entry page (or is this only displayed to admins)? can_moderate_links

Hmmm... still not working. Looks like the only way I'm going to figure this out is if I can browse the server's file system to see where these folders and files are ending up.

If I set local_file_root_prefix to "Websites/MySite.com/LDM" it accepts it but the directory isn't where it should be (can't find it).
If I set local_file_root_prefix to "Websites/MySite.com/wwwroot/LDM" it accepts it but the directory still can't be found.
If I set local_file_root_prefix to "/Websites/MySite.com/wwwroot/LDM" it accepts it and creates the directory where expected (on site). So it seems the leading forward-slash is needed.
If I set local_file_root_prefix to "/Websites/MySite.com/LDM" it complains that it can't write to that location.

My guess at this point is that I need the leading forward-slash but that I have a permissions issue. I'll talk with my hosting provider about what can be done on this.

Another odd thing I ran into. When I go to the Add an Entity page while signed in as an admin and click the "Uploadable filetypes and size limits" down-arrow below the Browse button it says my size limit is 2 Mbytes. If I do the same with a standard user account it say 47.68 Mbytes. Same file type in both instances. I set the attachment size for the file type to 50000000 in the vB CP. I don't know why it is displaying 2mb for an administrator and 47.68 mb for a regular user. Either way, if I select a file over 2mb the upload bar goes red and it says file too big. This may be due to the PHP max upload limit on my server. But I don't understand why an admin is getting a different max upload in the drop-down than a regular user. I can't find where in the permissions I might have screwed this up.

Hmmm... still not working.

I ran a test of a windows iis server. Without the leading slash, it seems that the directory is created in your forums directory, which is not what you want...

Not sure - I'm surprised that there is a problem - my test system with ldm 2.3.0 and vb 3.8.4 is showing the user profile fields fine.

Just to check the obvious - have you looked at the profile_ldmactivity setting on the LDM admin settings page.

Get back to me if this is not the problem - I imagine I will need access to your site.

A few remarks/suggestions -

LDM is pre-configured to use Jeroen Wijering's media player to handle videos in .flv and mp4/m4v formats, but this player does not handle .swf format.

The error message that you have posted seems to have an incomplete url. It should continue after "stre". I tried looking at your site, but did not find any videos to test.

White blank pages are a sign of internal configuration/code problems, and you need to find out the problem. There are a series of suggestions in the wiki at http://www.eirma.org/wikis/index.php/Common_Problems

There is a (still experimental) extra, ffmpeg-utils, in the release which will extract the first frame from a video to use as thumbnail.

Happy to help further if needed.

I removed the videos after they didn't work...
Its only the .swf that didn't but it not a huge deal... most of the videos i get are .fla

I will check the WIKI for the white page problem

Yes, I've experienced this. It also hits vbulletin itself in some situations. (The error messages above are in vb code, not in LDM.)

As far as I understand, the problem will be corrected in php 5.3.1 which is due out quite soon.

These are settings in the php.ini file which controls how your server handles php scripts. You should set post_max_size to a value that is somewhat bigger than upload_max_fiesize. The problem happens if people try to upload files that are very slightly smaller than upload_max_filesize, because the added data that accompanies the upload takes the total data over the total size limit but does not trigger a correct error message.

You need to speak to your server administators - unless you manage your own web server - as this is a systems file. Its location varies depending on operating system (Windows/Linux/etc).

AndrewD,

some suggestions for future versions, if you don't mind:
a) please oh please split administration/settings page into several! it makes an impression of having been created for superhumans who can remember EVERYTHING. :) some settings options are related to each other and it takes so much time to find them after the page was updated...
b) is it possible to somehow tie file ratings with corresponding thread ratings? i thought it would be just great if someone could rate file right from thread view and vice versa, thread view would display actual file rating.
c) maybe that's too advanced for a simple feature request but it would be beneficial to have means of accepting large file uploads. by large i mean greater than post_max_filesize. i thought, is it possible to implement ftp integration? like, user uploads large file to the server via ftp - this need not involve LDM - and then adds the file in LDM using ordinary "add entry" page. after submitting uploaded file's ftp url in corresponding field, LDM sees that this url belongs to the same server and instead of storing entered url it moves the file from ftp directory to upload_dir with the same name, or alternate name if "Rename" option was used when adding the file. this way we could have both of two worlds: ftp's robustness and minimum overhead with LDM's no-hassle file additions. i hope i described all this coherently enough...

and, um... i know it may sound too bold but have you ever considered overhauling LDM's phrasing in order to make it more fit for localization in languages structurally different from Western ones? frankly i don't know how Chinese people made their translation, i don't read Chinese and can't tell if it's close to English default but trying to make Russian translation proved to be difficult. for example, many phrases have not-too-meaningful names like ll_available or ll_entry or ll_search - there's no telling where those phrases are used and what for. also, i've encountered many phrases that are used simultaneously in different places with apparently different meaning, and this does add to complexity too, 'cause in many languages there are different forms of adjectives and verbs depending on context and trying to fit one phrase everywhere results in kludgy translation... or worse, if i'd translate a phrase for one page where i've seen it first and wouldn't have noticed that it is used on other page with different phrasing it'd just look ugly. mesa donta speeka inglisha. :( an ideal solution, if tedious, would be to ensure EVERY phrase is unique so it can be translated any way needed. LDM is just too great piece of software to be poorly translated and i'd like to do a quality job but it's not easy...

Thanks very much, these are very helpful suggestions and I will see what I can do. I do not plan to make a new release until vb 4.x is available, because this is likely to require a lot of work. I add specific remarks below.

a) please oh please split administration/settings page into several! it makes an impression of having been created for superhumans who can remember EVERYTHING. :) some settings options are related to each other and it takes so much time to find them after the page was updated...

I fully share your impression, and I have felt for some time that the settings page needs further effort. (It is a lot better than it used to be :)) However, is it more difficult that the main vb admin options page? (That's a serious question.)

b) is it possible to somehow tie file ratings with corresponding thread ratings? i thought it would be just great if someone could rate file right from thread view and vice versa, thread view would display actual file rating.

I think that I should review the entire integration of LDM with vb, and the use of Ajax code to allow this type of feature to work 'on the fly'.

well i didn't intend to force your decisions or something, as i said i just made some suggestions for future versions. whenever they be. :)

I fully share your impression, and I have felt for some time that the settings page needs further effort. (It is a lot better than it used to be :)) However, is it more difficult that the main vb admin options page? (That's a serious question.)

yes, i found it quite difficult to configure LDM properly, at least initially. this mod is a system unto itself, its complexity can be easily compared to the main vbulletin forum software and the learning curve after installing this mod is quite steep. vb admin options are divided in several pages, making them a lot more manageable. of course there's an option to display all settings at once but frankly i only use it rarely to find some option if i'd forget on which page it is located. otherwise i always use separate pages, it's much easier to navigate and it takes a lot less effort to concentrate on settings themselves.

I think that I should review the entire integration of LDM with vb, and the use of Ajax code to allow this type of feature to work 'on the fly'.

well that would be lovely. i, for instance, plan to use thread view extensively and i think it would be much easier for users to see rated files. right now it can be a bit unintuitive, so i think i'd better turn off thread ratings for announcement forums to avoid threads being rated differently from files themselves.

also, i think it would be beneficial to have tighter integration between LDM and vb for comments and discussion. maybe i have something configured wrong in my test setup but it appears that comments are not stored as announcement thread messages but rather as separate entities viewable only on LDM entry page. i'm not sure yet if that can be done without code changes using only templates but it would be good to display thread replies as comments on LDM page and vice versa, LDM comments as thread replies in announcement thread. better yet, store comments as posts in announcement thread and display the same messages both on LDM entry pages and in announcement thread. this way, it would make a perfect place for users to discuss files without undue confusion as to where to post their comments.

Again, this is a good idea and I will give it some thought.

thanks. this feature could spare me from constant headache of tracking user uploads, moving and adding them manually with respect to their original uploaders. i think i must elaborate a bit on my setup for you to understand it better: i run an automotive forum dedicated to technical matters, mostly DIY diagnostics and repair. some of my users are very experienced mechanics and they just love to add to the forum, they make up these "do this and that" manuals with lot of pictures, spare parts replacement sheets and such, these documents can get very large - especially when an user is more like auto mechanic than computer literate user, if you get my meaning. :) so Word documents with uncompressed photos within are not that uncommon and they can easily grow over my max_post_size limit that is set by hosting provider. i just don't have time to pre-process all those documents before uploading, i'd rather give users some reliable way to add large documents so they could do that themselves. ftp is good for uploads but i can't control downloads the way i want and i won't give free anonymous access to my ftp. i have an unlimited traffic hosting plan, in theory, but once the traffic from anonymous ftp soared up to 1000 gb in a month i got a bit uneasy and had to stop that. :(

I have tried to be consistent, but also to keep the number of phrases to a reasonable minimum to limit the memory overhead and the work needed to provide a translation. I will certainly review the separation of menu item/error message/information.

well i'm not php expert but i don't think that making phrases unique will place unbearable burden on servers with regards to memory. LDM phrases are only used on LDM pages, or so i perceive vbulletin's phrase management. also phrases can be divided in more sections to lower memory load. as for work needed to translate a mod, i've done quite a few already and i can tell you, i spend a lot more time trying to think up an elegant way to translate an English phrase when it is used in several places than simply translating sheer bulk of used-once phrases. if i'm sure that a phrase is used only once, like in help sections or admin sections, i just type. it's fast. when i have to stop and think, it consumes time. and with mods this large, it consumes a lot of time. :(

Thanks for the reply. I'll see what I can do.

This has been a living project now for 5 years, and indeed in the past, memory usage for text strings was an issue, perhaps less so now.

Concerning the linkage between LDM and vb features, initially I was determined to keep them completely separate, because otherwise it would be a full time job to keep things compatible (vb today is very different from vb in 2004 both in its features and coding style). A new release of LDM typically takes me a couple of months work, so I want to be quite sure what is happening with vb 4.x before starting the next round!

From 3.7.x thread

Simon, there's an option to add statistics to the user profile - LDM / admin/ settings / profile_ldmactivity

Is this what you are looking for.Hi, Andrew, that option is turned on and i see the recent uploads downloads as links in ldm blocks (as i have always done), what i'm talking about is when you go to a persons profiel and you have the tabs Visitors. About me, Statistics...etc, click the statistics and you have a series of lightly outlined boxes showing you "counts" from particular locations, this is where i would like to show
LDM Count
My LDM Downloads: xx
My LDM Uploads: xx

Does that make sense?

This is not built in. You can however use vbulletin's 'forum subscriptions' to protect the files with a 'pay for access' forum.

AndrewD

what that means?

LDM sets up default allowances/permissions for the standard vbulletin usergroups, e.g giving registered users some permissions and administrators most permissions. If you add new usergroups, they default to 'no LDM permissions'. This message warns you that you have added user groups and should check what permissions you want them to have - see ldm/admim/permissions and /allowances.

It had a quite substantial update this summer. I am waiting until the new coding styles/coding interfaces for vbulletin 4.x are released before doing any more work on new features, as the whole specification/code/test cycle is quite lengthy and it would be a great waste of effort if this had to be redone.

Hi, excellent mod, thanks.

I'm only having one problem with this, and that's when I try to change/add more attributes, then I receive this error message:

One or more of the attribute definitions is invalid - check that names are unique, attributes are assigned to a group, etc

It was fine a few days ago, but for some reason I cannot add or update them, and even receive the message when I just try to submit them as they are. I've tried just about everything to no avail.

Any help would be appreciated. :)

This error mesage is given if two of your attributes have the same name or if you attempt to create an attribute with an empty group name. Check the ldm/admin/entry attributes page. If this is not the problem, get back to me and we can look for something else.

This release of ldm will remain available, just as the versions for vb 3.7, 3.6, 3.5 and 3.0 have remained available. However, I have no idea at this stage whether future enhancements will be compatible with vb 3.8, as I have not yet seen details of the code changes that are being made to vbulletin.

Go to vb/admincp/languages and phrases/search in phrases and find the phrase with title "ldm_vbmenu_ldm". Create a translation for this phrase, e.g. "Files"

Is there a way to include file hosting sites, such as megaupload, imageshack etc. so people can upload using these? That way I could save a lot on bandwith and space. :)

Also, I want to use the extra you provide to place the latest download on my forum home, but am using another style that, apparantly, doesn't have the correct 'hook' (if this is the right word!), so they are not showing up. Please can you tell me the code I need to input into my forumhome temps to make it show up?

Thank you

Edit: I found the needed HTML and managed :)

AndrewD,

i accidentally found that extended seo option does not work with non-latin characters, in my case cyrillic. when LDM forms seo'd urls it just skips non-latin characters and category name that consists only of cyrillic letters results in url like "/seo_title/c-----4" and mixed category name looks like "c---ford--1". while not necessary a bug, it would be nice to have this condition documented somewhere.

It had a quite substantial update this summer. I am waiting until the new coding styles/coding interfaces for vbulletin 4.x are released before doing any more work on new features, as the whole specification/code/test cycle is quite lengthy and it would be a great waste of effort if this had to be redone.

Perhaps you can tell me which features you miss?
When vbulletin 4 is out, can you please integrate LDM into vbulletin search, including 'new posts'?
Please add a 'latest files' widget.
A way to integrate LDM into vb CMS its grid (lay out) would be very nice.
Please use vb's commenting system for entries, like the CMS does for articles. (It currently uses a hidden forum)

Exactly as it says - there are instructions for dealing with this situation in the online wiki at http://www.eirma.org/wikis/index.php/Site_Configuration,

I imagine you are using the IIS web server with PHP configured to run in CGI mode.

AndrewD,

i'm not quite sure i've looked through all the wiki but is there any way to make force_accept option usergroup based in addition to category based? for example, i'd like to except unregistered users (and spiders too) from having to accept the agreement 'cause they have no access to files anyway.

force_accept is a setting rather than a permission, which means that it applies to all user groups. I recall discussing this with the people who originally requested this feature.

I don't think it would be much work to make it a permission, but it would require some modifications to the code.

AndrewD,

well i'm glad to hear it's not that complicated but i'll definitely wait for you to fix it. frankly, i'm afraid even to try touching LDM code, it's too big for me. :)

and another bugreport: after installing and opening LDM to my users it started to mail me sporadically with messages like this:

-------------------------------------------------
Database error in vBulletin 3.8.4:

Invalid SQL:

WHERE sessionhash = 'f2176c383e82a857ae03127700eb4bda';

MySQL Error : MySQL server has gone away

it doesn't happen with any other pages and it's not too consistent, i.e. not every user accessing LDM pages generate this error. can you recommend something?

AndrewD,

follow-up to this error: i talked to my hoster techs, they say mysql is "going away" because such an update query takes more than a minute to complete and their cron script just kills mysql process. while i think it's a problem on mysql side - i cannot imagine why simple update request in a memory table could take this much time - i tried to replicate this problem and found that it appears after an user downloads some file and stays on the entry page for some time. can it be of any help?

As far as I know, this is actually a configuration setting in MySQL - a few people have reported it over the years. I think it is *wait_timeout*, which by default is 28800 seconds. Some sites set this to a much smaller value, and this is when the error message starts to appear.

I think you are almost correct with your diagnosis - if the physical download takes longer than the timeout setting, then the database connection has gone away before vbulletin can carry out its close down procedures. Maybe there's some fix I could apply inside LDM - there is a warning message generated if the value is less than 10 seconds - but it has not seemed serious.

wow this is quite the in depth script. Could someone tell me what goes in this space (in red) or where to put something here? Thanks

Various things appear here

- if you are inside a category, the category's description appears
- in addition, a range of other information will appear, depending on user/options selected/etc:
o a list of moderators
o if you have created a "linked forum" for the category, the name of that forum
o if posts are auto-created when you add new entries, the name of that forum
o if the "starred nominations" feature is enabled, some information on the current user's nomination
o if the allowances system is operational, the user's allowances/consumption
o a warning if the setting *must_rate_download* is on
o ditto *must_rate_play*
o if the category is "autosynchronised" with a filesystem directory, information on the state of synchronisation
o an RSS link if the RSS feed setting is on

If none of these apply, e.g. in the base category with none of the above options, you simply get an empty box as your image shows.

If you want to add further information, you need to edit the "links_main" template.

Hi,

edit the links_main template. Find the section that reads

<if condition="$viewcattext or $viewcatextra">
<tr>
<td class="alt1">
$viewcattext
$viewcatextra
</td>
</tr>
</if>

and change to

<if condition="($viewcatid>0 or $script!=$LINKS_SCRIPT) and ($viewcattext or $viewcatextra)">

You will have to edit the links_playbit template. You must keep at least the following:

<table width="100%">
<tr>
<td align="center" valign="middle">
<!--$linkid::playerbit-->
</td>
</tr>

Question: a) do you have the setting *force_redirect* set to 1 or 2; and b) are the files held on another server or on your own server. With *force_redirect* set to 1 or 2, when LDM serves a remote file, it does not (cannot) keep track of the bytes transferred, so records the download as 0 bytes. In other circumstances, it should record the file size, so let me know if there is a problem.

The calls to ini_restore() can be commented out without difficulty. LDM tries to claim extra memory when producing image thumbnails because this can be a very memory intensive task wih high resolution pictures. The function call is used to return that memory, but it will get returned in any case when the script completes.

The call to realpath() is more difficult, and I will have to investigate if there is a realistic alternative.

I've thought a bit more about this problem. It is not straightforward in the current version of the code to disable realpath() - a number of features will break. In order to modify the code in order to lock down the features that depend on this function, I would need to rewrite a substantial part of the addon. I am willing to include this in the list of things to look into when vbulletin version 4 is released, but I cannot justfy doing this for vb 3.x.

The image should be displayed, provided the following apply:

a) the image is a jpg, gif or png
b) the LDM admin setting *local_file_root* is *no*

It will not appear if *local_file_root* is set to *yes* because there is no way then for vbulletin to find the image file.

Many Thanks if this works half as good as I am expecting even if it isn't what I thought it to be initially LOL!

Being relatively new to the world of vB, and based on the name, I thought it was the links directory mod.with an updated name from the board I moded on before, that had the links directory, not realizing that product is a vBa subscribed mod, since I didn't get that far to add vBa when I downloaded this!

Hmm come to think of it though, we didn't have cmps on that board, is theree more than one version of a vB links directory page?

Anyways, marked installed, voted for and nominated if it still counts toward anything!

Great and versatile mod(s) especially with the numerous extras!

TSG!

Hi,

I recently had to upgrade out forum from vB3.6.X to latest vB3.8.X. In accordance I had to upgrade LDM. Now there is a problem:

As regular users edit an entry they created, the "Parent category" listbox at the bottom in NOT populated. As a result, if they confirm their editing they would get a "Category does not exist" error.

This is not a problem from admin forum users.

Any idea what could cause that?

Off-hand, I would imagine that this is a permissions-related problem. Do all your categories have associated 'parent forums'? Worth checking that regular users have 'canview' and 'canviewothers' permissions for these forums (vb/admincp). If this is not the problem, I'm very willing to take a look at your site, but will need full admin access - send me a PM if you want to go this route.

here is the error.

Link check failed. For a url pointing to a remote site, this may not be a cause for concern, as not all sites reply to the check. For a local file, something is wrong.

The place to start is to check that LDM is actually seeing the file in the right directory, i.e that your LDM settings are what you think. (For example, you seem to be saying that the file is stored in a subdirectory of the system root, but by default LDM looks for files in subdirectories of the web root directory.)

One way to do this is to go to LDM/admin/mass edits. Choose the 'scan' link next to the category in which you want to store the entry pointing to your .iso file. Then use the drop down menu to walk through the directory tree until you come to the directory with the iso file. The file should then show up - if it doesn't, then you've tracked down the problem.

If you want my help with this, send me site details and a username/password with admin privs.

It throws the right directory, and shows the system root subdirectory as i have set it up..
Now next it shows this thing..

Skipped (not in mimetype table): 0 [1] iso [3] 1 [1]

Ths means i suppose it gets 3 .iso files and it skips them , but it finds the 2 .rar files correctly..

Now, when i try to add a file from .rar extension which exists there.. it shoots me the same error..
Leave the .iso file..it is not taking any other .rar file now..
I have spent the whole day in search of errors on this stuff..
but no use.

Where and what to do now...??

The message says that it skips .iso files because you have not defined the .iso filetype in the vbulletin mimetype table.

As I said in the last message, I'm happy to take a look at your site if you send me details. It may be quicker/easier than trying to debug this remotely.

The problem seems to be that your .rar and .iso files are too large. There's an in-built limit in 32-bit versions of php, see http://blog.tagwalk.com/2009/05/php-failed-to-open-stream-file-too-large/ of about 2.1Gb. I can't see a way round this apart from breaking the files into smaller sizes.

No-one has hit this problem before (or at least reported it to me), so I was not aware of it and had not coded LDM to give a sensible warning.

Use the 'Entry Attributes' feature, see http://www.eirma.org/wikis/index.php/Entry_Attributes

Not sure I understand your question. Uploads are stored in the appropriate directory under the server root if you have set *local_file_root* to yes, or under the web root if set to no

I WANT options to attach more files in a single entry , i have tried to use the URL OPTION , but its not counting the hit correctly..
Its allowing users to download the attachments even if they exceed their USERGROUP ALLOWANCES.

As I said in the last post, you do this by defining extra Entry Attributes.

Define the entry attributes as type URL

On the 'Add Entry' form, fill the field with the local filename, exactly as per the standard entry url, for example /myfile.zip or /mydir/myfile.zip

I have a little problem with the long title of the name of the categories in firefox. It's written on two lines.

But in internet explorer, it's good, it's in one line.

Must I modifie cat_name_colwidth for the long titles are in one line in firefox ?

There is an othere little bug. The sorts of entries in categorie is :

It's not now :

This isn't a bug - there was a discussion some time ago about the 'correct' ordering of titles that have numbers in them, and the view was that (in your case) 101 comes after 11, not before it. The change was made in version 2.3.0.

If you really want the old behaviour, edit includes/local_links_include.php and find (line 1341 or thereabouts):

uksort($optbit, create_function('$a,$b', 'return strnatcasecmp($a, $b);'));

and change it to

uksort($optbit, create_function('$a,$b', 'return strcasecmp($a, $b);'));

Thanks, will be taken into consideration for the vb 4.x version of LDM, but I'm not sure whether the first suggestion is possible from the server side. There will be no further development of the 3.x code other than serious bug fixes.

For the first suggestion, if it's not possible, I think we can do that :

http://ups.imagup.com/06/1260487314.jpg

other suggestion : we can read the comments in a popup or ajax (when we clics, all of the comments are displays below the entrie without redirection in another page) if it's possible.

Yes, take a look in the release/extras directory. There's a set of plugins to limit access according to certain properties. One of these limits by post count. After installation, you get a new set of options on the LDM admin settings page.

OMG, holy cow Batman! There is tons of stuff in there I never knew existed.

Unfortunately, I installed this one and it seems to have no effect. A user with 0 post count in 'Registered Users' (and no other groups) is still allowed to download, even though I have it set to 3.

Ideas on what could be the problem? BTW, it says "Over-ride: None" for each, and I even double checked the category I am testing from, it matches.

I just tried the extra with the settings shown in the attached, and it worked. (My figures of 100 posts and all usergroups are arbitrary.) You have to explicitly tell it what to limit and the allowances that apply in the event of failing to have the required number of posts. Also keep in mind that if you've given a usergroup 'can_bypass_bandwidth_limits' permission, these limits are always bypassed.

Thank you. Even though I did not want to limit based on time period or bandwidth, once I told it I did and set them to 0, it worked. Just my opinion, but if these radio options don't work on "No" then why have them? I mean, I don't want to limit based on bandwidth or time, so I used "No", and it turns out I needed to say "Yes".

One last thing, please, and I will be on my merry way! Where is this phrase (see attachment). I don't want it up there, I want to make it null/delete it, so the user only sees the error message when downloading, not on every page. This is because it's confusing to the user, it makes it seem like there is a # of files limit or bandwidth limit when there is not.

I've clearly confused people with this. The files/bandwidth figures that you specify here are used as the bandwidth limits that will apply to people who have not achieved the required number of posts. So, to prevent all downloads to these people, the fields have to be set to zero and the radio buttons turned on. The radio buttons allow you to selectively control which allowance is being restricted. When this extra was coded, the intention was to allow different allowances to people with the required posts. The same logic applies in the other 'limit' extras.

One last thing, please, and I will be on my merry way! Where is this phrase (see attachment). I don't want it up there, I want to make it null/delete it, so the user only sees the error message when downloading, not on every page. The phrase is built up inside the code. To hide it, edit the links_catbit_extras templates and find/remove the following sequence:

<if condition="$allow['consumption']">
<div align="right" class="smallfont">
$allow[consumption]
</div>

This is very nice to see Andrew. Do you plan to use vb4's CMS, comments and search function in a future release?
Does vb4 allow easier implementation of any features on the wish list, like tag and reputation integration?
Are any vb4 widgets planned?
What are your general plans with LDM for vb 4.x?

I have no formal plans, but I suspect this is the list of priorities:

a) Get LDM working with its current functionality with VB4. So far, this seems mainly a matter of dealing with all the templates and template calls.

b) Tidy things up so that LDM follows (e.g.) the new css practices and stylevars

c) Integrate with the CMS, including widgets to replicate the previous vbadvanced addons

I'm not sure about vbadvanced support yet. Will have to see what is forthcoming.

d) Only then will I start thinking about new features/suggestions

I just upgraded from 3.8.3 to 3.8.4 PL2 and my forum's home page is displaying as an empty white blank page. I went through possible causes listed at http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/blank_pages and I'm wondering if the following is it:

4. You have a bad plugin installed. To disable the plugin system, edit config.php and add this line right under <?php

define('DISABLE_HOOKS', true);

I tried adding that line to my config.php file and the home page now displays. But if I click the Links and Downloads Manager link I get a empty page with the words "No input file specified."

So, is this an issue with LDM or did I screw something up when I upgraded from 3.8.3 to 3.8.4 PL2?

Sorry to hear this. I have just applied the upgrade to vb 3.8.4pl2 on my test system and do not experience the problem you are describing. Have you tried disabling GZIP compression using your vb acp - Go to vBulletin->admincp->vBulletin options->Cookies and Header Options, disable GZIP HTML Output, go back to one of the pages that was causing problems and try again. PHP error messages create white pages when this option is selected. Another possibility is that one of the php files was not correctly uploaded for vb 3.8.4.

If necessary, I am willing to take a look at your site, but will need full access (FTP and admin).

This turns out to be a warning generated in php version 5.2.12 but not in earlier versions, which explains why it is only just being reported.

You can fix the problem (I think) by editing one of the code files, includes/local_links_include.php. If you are not comfortable making edits, get back to me.

a) Make a backup copy of that file, in case something goes wrong
b) Find function ldm_catcmp, which is between lines 1543 and 1571 in your version of LDM
c) Replace all these lines by the contents of the attached.

Let me know if that fixes things.

I imagine the problem is as the error message says - the file that is being downloaded is corrupted. Perhaps it was already corrupt before uploading the file, or perhaps the upload did not work correctly. I don't think it is a problem in LDM itself - just try reuploading.

I am having the same problem. Checked permissions and all my categories have associated parent forums, all regular users have canview, canviewothers permissions. I even checked and noticed I had it set so regular users could not edit their posts, fixed those permissions for all forums, then tried again. Same problem. Please help.

Im trying to find out why LDM is giving this error on each LDM page:
Warning: uksort() [function.uksort]: Array was modified by the user comparison function in [path]/includes/local_links_include.php on line 1589
I recently installed vboptimise. However disabling that does not resolve it.
I use LDM 2.3.0-p1

This is caused by a change in the error handling in the latest version of php. Replace includes/local_links_include.php by the attached - should fix things.

I'm using LDM 2.3.0 and need to customize some things. I've done this in the past but for the life of me I can't recall how I did it so now I'm pretty much starting over on changing the text that is displayed in some locations. I'd appreciate some help:

1) On the page that lists files available to download, There's a section where I've got directions for downloaders. It's a box with a heading and is under the menu bar with "Categories Show Search" links and above the "Sort by" drop-down list. I want to edit the text in this box but just can't find how to do so. I've searched all the .xml files I've got as well as used the "Search in Phrases" utility in the vB Admin Control Panel.

2) On the page where one enters all the information on a file they are uploading, there's a heading area just above the form (just below the menu bar with "Categories Show Search" links). How do I edit that heading?

Thanks!

These are both done via the ldm admin/settings page.

1) You either have (or have had) installed the "add-page-information" 'extra' which gives you a group on controls and a the text box (pageinfo_message) to set this message.

2) This is done with the "use_instructions" box on the settings page.

The first of these messages can be modified on a per-category basis (using the edit category/control settings page) but the second can only be set globally.

I've uploaded an update to this version, which corrects the reported error with PHP 5.2.12 and a few other minor bug fixes. No major changes made, and none planned - development has switched to the vb4.0 code.

Thanks for responding so fast!

I'm pretty sure I haven't added any special add-ons to LDM nor to vB besides LDM. When I go to the LDM admin console I can't find any reference to "pageinfo_message". If I do have it installed then where would I find the value to edit it?

2) This is done with the "use_instructions" box on the settings page.
The "use_instructions" box is empty.

The first of these messages can be modified on a per-category basis (using the edit category/control settings page) but the second can only be set globally.
None of the existing custom text I'm wanting to change appears anywhere in any box in the LDM admin console. I'm not sure I've accurately described the text areas I want to change. Don't know why I didn't think to give links before.

The first area I want to edit can be viewed at http://www.spellquizzer.com/community/local_links.php?catid=1. The text area I want to edit is the light blue inside box that has the following text"
SpellQuizzer spelling lists that have been exported to an .sqexp file and can be imported into SpellQuizzer. Only one spelling list per export file please.
- Click the "Upload a Spelling File" menu link in the blue menu bar above to upload an exported spelling list of your own.
- Click the "How to Import Spelling Lists" link in the Pencil menu above for help on how to import a list into SpellQuizzer.

The second text area I want to change is at http://www.spellquizzer.com/community/local_links.php?action=addlink&catid=1. Unfortunately, you need to be signed in to my forum to view that page. But the text I want to change is the heading of the form for uploading files. The current text reads "User Uploaded Spelling Lists" which isn't really right since this is a form for uploading lists, not browsing existing lists. I'm thinking this may be a category title I somehow set previously and that it has to be the same for both the page where existing entries are listed as well as the upload form. It would be nice if I could have different headings for those two pages since they are functionally different (one for browsing/downloading while the other is for uploading). Feel free to register with the forum to be able to view the page (though I'll of course understand if you don't want to) I'm referring to here.

This is the "extended description" for the category, which is changed by going into "Edit Category".

As you say, this header is simply the category name. You could change it (if you really want to - beware that you will then need to remember you made the change if you upgrade) by editing the links_addnewlink template. Find the sequence that reads:

<tr align="center">
<td class="tcat" align="center" colspan="2">
$viewcatname
</td>
</tr>

and replace $viewcatname by whatever text you want.

I think that a better (cleaner) solution will be to leave this title alone and set the "use_instructions" for the category by going to Edit Category/Control Settings. The text you enter there will appear immediately under the title.

Let me know if that fixes things.That helped, i was having that issue after moving another site :D

Very interesting, I might change from my current file manager to this.

However, as I have about 700 or so files to transfer, does this offer some sort of import feature which I can use to avoid having to enter in each file 700 times? If not, what other alternatives is there within this mod that will help me achieve this?

Also, is it possible to have one directory for each category on the server?

There are several options that you may find useful:

a) You can set up LDM to carry out automatic synchronisations of directories and categories. This will bring in all your existing entries and maintain the directory/category alignment. It will not automatically name/describe all your entries, but see c).

b) You can create and import an xml file describing the database you want to set up, including entry names, descriptions, urls, etc.

c) You can also update the names/descriptions of a synchronised database via an xml file.

There is some explanation of these steps in the online wiki.

In my forum, I have subforums that are really links to a LDM category. These subforums list the latest entry. The width of this listing is very narrow, which makes titles to be spread over several lines. This looks very ugly.
Is there a way to control this and make it wider? Or alternatively turn it off?

A small bug/inconsistency: the number of files in a category are listed, but not the number of comments. It seems that the number of files belongs in the 'threads' column, while the number of comments belongs in the 'posts' column. Currently the number of files is listed in the 'posts' column.

But whatever i edit with the webthumbs plug in enabled give me a error:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ')' in /x/x/x/x/home/forum/includes/local_links_include.php(1932) : eval()'d code on line 642

Or have anyone an Idea how to use http://fadeout.de/ for that.

Christian, there's a coding bug in the plugin, which had been there for some time but no-one had noticed.

You can fix it easily as follows:

- go to vb/admincp/products and plugins/manage plugins
- edit the plugin called "Links and Downloads Manager - Use BlugaNet WebThumb to autoimage a site" which is atached to hook ldm_link_autoimage
- go almost to the end of the code (it's quite long) and find the sequence:

$path = ldm_make_filename($links_defaults['upload_dir'], $my_webdir);
$fullpath = ldm_get_local_filename($path);
require_once(DIR . '/includes/functions_file.php');
ldm_create_directory($fullpath, $links_defaults['secure_nullindexfile'])) {

and change the last of these lines to

ldm_create_directory($fullpath, $links_defaults['secure_nullindexfile']);

- Save

That should do it.
