What is the safest way to buy 'used' vBulletin licenses? How to pay? Using PayPal?

Hi everybody!


I'm buying a vBulletin licence from a another vB.org user, and we already set the price and a way to pay.

At first, he asked me to pay via Western Union, but I asked if I could pay by PayPal, which he accepted by informing me his PayPal address.


The question is: Will it be safe to me? Is there any possibility that something could go wrong and I loose my money? :confused: I'm used to pay via PyaPal on eBay, but not here with users on vB.org or any other place else... :erm:

Theres always going to ba a risk buying from someone you don't know, but the best thing to be 100% sure is if in doubt don't buy. Paypal in my eyes are safer than WU. but people still and can use paypal for their scams and sometimes dependant on what scam they run , manage to get paypal on their side in disputes.

Get recomendations from other members, does anyone else know this guy?? Has anyone traded with him?? Ask him to put it on ebay then you'll at least be able to see his feedback?? if he has any :confused:

Another mega question that should be setting alarm bells off in yopur head is how cheap your getting it for!! have you though about the price and why it would appear cheap? You may end up getting a VB site but it could be a nulled site!

For the best Forum software in the world, the best option would be in my eyes to get it from VB.com direct - if you weigh up what your actually getting, plus the guarantee that you won't be ripped off then thats gotta be worth its weight in gold.

Whatever route you take i hope that i've managed to open your eyes at the risks which could happen, i'm not saying that everyone that sells their VB licence is a scammer but you really need to do all your checks, and satisfy yourself that you've reduce the risks as far as is practicably possible.

So, following the directions given by Floris, I find that the first thing to have in mind is the fair price:

Owned License:
A new owned license costs $180 and gets 12 months free access to downloads in the member area. To renew this access costs $40/year, and will permit you to download the most recent version of vBulletin and receive some technical support. Anyone can renew at any time. A renewal adds 12 months member area access to any particular license. A second-hand purchase of an owned license which will require you to renew this download access shouldn't cost you more then $50 to $75 (because you will still need to pay $30 to renew it). An owned license with anything between 6 to 12 months left, shouldn't cost you more then $80 to $120, and if there are less than 6 months left, it shouldn't cost you more then $80. Keep in mind that someone who already holds owned license(s) can buy more owned licenses at a reduced cost. On several sites users will try to sell their license for around $100 or more, but the average sale ends up at $90 even with quite some months left to download it. Of course, there are always exceptions for licenses with more than 12 months of member area access remaining, or licenses purchased in bulk which were later found to be unneeded. No matter what is presented, use the safety tips listed above, research what you are about to buy, and always check with Jelsoft!

Oh, by the way... As I'm an actual Jelsoft customer, I would like to know what are the advantages (I mean "price discounts") for existing Jelsoft clients when buying additional licenses? (excluding bulk!) :confused:

I seem to recall you must purchase them at the same time. However, the best people to ask about this are the sales people on vb.com. You may send an email to them at sales@vbulletin.com

Some update on this matter:

The seller seems to be trustful. He informed me about his license information on vbulletin.com (license number).

We agreed on separating the total negotiated price in two payments:
- One BEFORE I receive the password of his account at vbulletin.com
- One AFTER I receive the password.

(right now, I've already payed for the first 50% and I'm waiting for the password)

Well, we've completed the process, and let me tell you that almost everything was somehow new to me!


We've made the trade like this:

1st - I payed the seller 50% of the total agreed value;

2nd - The seller started the license transfer ticket at vBulletin.com and informed me the ticket URL;

3rd - Jelsoft asked the seller to inform my (buyer) personal data to fill Jelsoft's internal customer info db;

4rd - We both receive an email from Jelsoft, and I had to respond stating that I understood all that could be involved with a license transfer and that I really wanted to continue;

5th - Jelsoft confirmed the license transfer and sent me an email with the license number that was transferred, along with my new customer ID and password;

6th - Seeing that the transfer was confirmed, I payed the seller the rest of the 50%.


The seller was very cooperative and communicative and I really learned a lot with all the process.
