This mod is officially tested with 3.8.1, but has been reported to work with many other versions.

Description

This mod allows a user, when creating or editing a thread, to specify a Thumbnail image to be used for display next to the thread in the Thread Listing.

With this mod you can define a set of forums that have thumbnails enabled, then in those forums whenever a user creates or edits their thread they can change their thumbnail, based on the method that you choose to allow.

This image is then shown in the Forum Display, in place of the Thread Icon.
The image also appears in Search & Tag Search, and I can add it to the regular Search if somebody requests it. And possibly have options for displaying in each area.

I installed it, and I do have it in the AdminCP. I set it to one of my forums but when I create a thread there, I dont see anything to choose an Image instead of Icon for the thread. There is no change to my Theme (not standard!) done.

I thought templates get edited automatically ?

My vB Version is 3.8.2 btw.

There might be a possibility if your style isn't standard that the auto-edits might not work, although they have worked with my styles. I can write up directions on how to manually edit it in, if you would like.

Actually, it looks like the initial Create Thread isn't working correctly, sorry about that. (I haven't used it in a while because I use a custom form to submit threads.)

I'll get a fix in for that right away.

In the mean time, if you edit the first post of the thread, there should be an option for the thumbnail though.

No, i don´t see anything where I could that, no matter if I create a thread or re-edit it. So i guess the template edits aren´t done.

Sorry, I uploaded a bad version of the product. I made some changes on my version but forgot to export them down.

As of now, I'll add a guide to the first post on how to manually update the templates, because I don't think the auto is working.

Okay, everything should be fixed in the product file now. New thread should work, but for now you will have to do all of the template edits yourself, which are also now listed. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I'll be working on the auto-edits in the near future.

Could you maybe then give me all the details for the template changes ? Is it a lot changes ? Because i think if it is, it will keep many people from using the Mod, usually Mods do automatic template edits as far as I have seen.

The only thing I see which might be a problem for users is that the Image can only be added as URL. Not anyone likes to offer Imagehosting on his Webspace and Image hosting Services out there often don?t like direct links to images but rather use their image code. And in the long run, those images will be gone because Imagehosters don?t store images for life.

Using the attachment function for that might not be the nicest but it would make it easier for people to find a place to direct upload their images instead of first searching for a Public imagehosting site with direct links allowed.

Might be thinking about offering both, direct URLs like it is now, and also using a attached image in the thread. How about that ?

Well, I'm assuming that if there isn't a URL or Attachment then it would show the no thumbnail image. But for the Admin CP options, they can choose to allow thumbnails from one of those 3.

So if an admin only wants to allow thumbnails from Attachments or only from a URL, then they can do that.

It would be nice if adding an image attachment is an optional REQUIREMENT. For example, one could create a simple gallery this way and have all the images hosted on their own site instead of annoying hosts like imageshack. Furthermore, image attachments can be automatically thumbnailed by simple adding &thumb=1 behind the url. This means, true resizing of the image using GD instead of scaling an external image using width or height (which should never be done).

Attachments can be filtered for images with the following query

If you use the URL option (which is actually the only option as we speak), then it is served through direct links. The only things that will go through PHP would be if you decided to use the Attachment Thumbnails (future feature).

Because right now, it is just an img html tag with the url for the src.

I don't have a max height defined right now, only width. So that just means that the width is scaled down to 150, and the height is just scaled accordingly.

I'll add a height restriction to this list of additional features.

Looks good. I'll probably make it work with phrases in the next version as well, so the strings aren't coded in, so that should make translation substitution easier in the future.

Did you try removing the no thumbnail image? And then seeing if that would work? I'm using it without the thumbnail image and it works fine. I'm on 3.8.2 also.

I even tried using the code for newthread and still no good, the url is not being saved. I checked to see if it was because I was not owner of the thread and that was not the problem either. I'm running out of ideas of why it will not save the url info.

This is very important since there are 6,000 movies already posted I would like to show the Thumbnail for the movie.
Also Stickied Threads are not showing anything but the post icon.

Sorry I can't help you. My smilies don't show either, but I don't mind. I can edit an post and add a smilie but it doesn't save. But on my board i don't mind. But if I edit a post and add a url it works for me.

Posting 6 times in under an hour isn't going to get me to reply any quicker, I can't be sitting at my computer every minute of every day.

I don't know what to tell you about the edit not working, because it has been working for everybody else. You could try uninstalling and reinstalling it, but besides that I can't really tell you anything else.

You can also try this version, it includes a little change to add the URL differently, more similar to the New Thread way. But besides that, I wouldn't even know where to start.

Sorry about the multiple posts, Dawned on me kinda late to just edit my thread and add in new info. More info on the problem though, if I create a thread and put in a thumbnail url (which works fine), then decide to edit the thread and change the url, it lets me edit the url and saves it fine. Moving the thread to a different forum will remove the ability to change the URL because that second forum probably isn't in the list of forums in the ACP.

As far as not saving the information, I'm not sure what's going on. I'll keep looking into it, but at this time I don't have a clue.

I have enabled like 50 forums for the thumbnail, could that be causing the problem? Having too many forums enabled? This mod you made is truly AWESOME and exactly what I have been looking for on my site and works good on new threads made. I appreciate any and all help on this and any upgrades you may make, like if it will bring in the first attached image that will automatically bring in all posters for my site on activated forums. If you can do that then you can surely expect a donation from me for that solves all my problems and will make the site Look so much better. WooHoo!

You could try just enabling it on one and see if that fixes the issue, but I don't think that will do it.

I'll be working on the attachment thing in the very near future, that's been requested a few times, so it's high on the priority list.

I did a little more digging into this, as I see it you are creating a db table "$db->query_write("ALTER TABLE " . TABLE_PREFIX . "thread ADD thumbnailurl varchar(250) NOT NULL");"
I checked my DB and there is not a Table_Prefix , nor a threadinfo, nor a thumbnailurl field

I think the problem is that the table was never created nor the field for the table so the info is not getting saved properly. Can you help me figure this out?

I manually created the Table "threadinfo" and put in the field "thumbnailurl" but it did not seem to make a difference.

You may or may not have a Table Prefix, that depends upon the database, but vBulletin should take care of that, this is how all of the vBulletin code works.

The db code you mentioned above adds the thumbnailurl column to the thread table, which I can see from the image does already exist. The $threadinfo doesn't reference the table itself, but a PHP variable that's defined to hold information retrieved from the thread table.

Hey Null where can I go to see if the url values are being written to the db?
I also had to manually add in thumbnailurl field to the Thread Table, still made no difference. :(
I manually inserted data into the thumbnailurl field for a particular thread and still the system is not bringing in the poster. So I am obviously looking in the wrong place for the db info on these thumbnails.
I also searched the entire db for one of the url's from a new post in which the thumbnail is working and see no results in the DB for that thumbnail, where is the system hiding this info?

From that screenshot you sent earlier, you'll have to search in the thread table using a threadid that you have attempted to set the thumbnail on. Then look for the thumbnail url field, there will either be a url there or there will be nothing.

Hi Null,
First off the thumbnailurl was not even a field in the Thread Table, I created the field manually in the Thread Table, input a image url on a particular thread and it did not show up when I edited that thread. I then took the url for the thread thumbnail that does work and did a complete search of the entire VB DB and it did not find the url. Although it did find the url I did put in manually. So I am missing something, mostly curious where is it writing the info to if not the Site's DB? Also shouldn't it pull the one thumbnailurl I manually put in the db?

Maybe you could help me tell it to write and retrieve the url from the Table and field I created, I have created Table = Threadinfo with Field = thumbnailurl, I also put in Table = Thread the Field = thumbnailurl, with the same parameters I believe you intended to use.
I am sorry to be such a bother but this is very important to my website and its users and you would earn the gratitude of me and thousands of people all around the world for your help on this matter. :D

I guarantee that the field is in the thread table, otherwise it wouldn't work when you create a new thread either, but you said that it does work in that case.

make sure to use the original product file, the second one that I sent you isn't thoroughly tested and I think it might have a bug in it. While the first one is highly tested and I know it works for several people.

It will definitely have the attachment option, where it will automatically use the first attachment. I'm not sure about using the first image in the post, I haven't looked into how difficult that will be. I'll have to get back to you on that.

Making a New Thread it works , but editing a thread and putting in a url does not work. It will not save the URL.

I tried to edit the field thumbnailurl on the thread table and the thumbnail changed perfecto but not a good solution for users who can't deal with db's or phpmyadmin :(

This is what you need. All I did was delete the "is not a sticky" part of the conditional wich is bold and red above.

That was the threadbit template by the way.

Note: This will make all forums with thumbnails enabled have thread stickies with thumbnails. So you cant have some thumbnail threads with icons for stickies and some thumbnail threads with thumbnails for stickies.

Would it be possible to do either of the following:

When a user selects a thread prefix, automatically use a predefined thumbnail image, with a diff thumbnail per prefix.

or

have a selection of radio buttons under the box where they can just click on one of them and it puts the predtermined thumbnail img url into the thumbnail box for them?

this would greatly avoid users not putting one in

I'm working on a new version at this very moment, including the following features:

Displaying Thread Icon instead of requiring No Thumbnail Image

Despite those being cool features to add in, I might put it off for a while to get these more pertinent features out to you more quickly.

I've got almost all of the functionality complete, but I've run into an issue.

For some reason, I can't get attachments working on my local test server, so if somebody would like to volunteer to test the attachment part, then we can make sure that is working the same as everything else and I can get the new version released.

Right now there is a "Image Width" Property available in the Settings.
If you set this to 100, then all of the images will be resized to 100 pixels wide.
This is done at the html img tag level, so it doesn't decrease the load time for the image, but it won't mess up the page at all, because all of the images will be the same width.

My site people use very large images all of the time, and we haven't had any issues at all.

I know somebody who is using it on 3.8.3, so I assume it will work on 3.8.2 as well.
Make sure that you did the template edits (or just wait for this new version that does them for you) and make sure that you have Thread Icons enabled for your forums, because the Thumbnails simply replace those icons. Lastly, make sure that the mod is set to active in the options.

Seeing as how nobody has volunteered to test out the attachment part (since I can't get attachments working for unknown reasons), I might have to remove support for that feature, or release it with that part not fully tested.

Yes the Image URL is still acessable in the showthread template. Use $thread[thumbnailurl]

installed this and for some reason when enabled it now only shows the first thread posted in the forum, all other threads disappear.

I'm using the 'Get thumbnail from first attachment' option.

If there is more than one page, it shows the first thread on that page. So I am getting a lot of pages with only one thread showing, and the other threads just aren't showing.

I'd love to use this is it isn't slowing my forum down like another thumbnail mod I tried, so please help :)

Edit: NM apparently I'm just out of it today lol I looked up before DL'ing and saw "Mark as Uninstalled" so it must be this version I swear there was 3.6 or I found the info how to in a 3.6 area... ohh well it works and I love it, currently using on a gaming tournament forum, it shows animated .gif's of custom maps for BF2142 so you can view them and comes in handy for the Generals and Command staff of the armies to do map picks for the following week after the battle each sunday is over ;)

This is such a great mod! Would there be any way that we could edit the thumbnail at a later time. On our boards we have a market place to sell items and it would be great to have an image that said SOLD that could be edited after the item has sold. So this would be very helpful if this could be done.

Thats already an option, Just hit edit, then hit go advanced and you can change the thumbnail url, thats with the url system Im not sure about the first image post or attached image settings though.

Hmmmmm, it won't let me change the image once I put the original URL in. I have no clue what I am doing wrong.

EDIT: OK, I tried it again and it won't let me change it. :( It shows the original image and then when I edit it again it also shows the original URL. I would so love to get this to work...just not sure what I did wrong. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hey Null the new update is great, I thought I might pitch in a few ideas myself

*Option to set thumbnails as a required field when thumbnails are enabled
*Prioritize the three forms of thumbnail fetching (ex: if I am a thumbnail forum and a thumbnail url was not given use the first image)
*Dont show thumbnails on closed threads

Those are the only three I have right now, Ill let you know if any more decent ideas cross my mind.

I'll take a look into this, but it had been working for me.

The only reason I can think of for this is if you had done the manual edits for v1 and then added in v2. Or possibly, if you have edited your templates, you might have two instances of the string that is being searched for to do the auto-template edits.

This could be an issue with the Auto-template edits. If you want to PM me your editpost template, I can take a look to see if it should be working.

I had the Priority planned before, I think it's listed in rough form on like the first page of this thread, but it adds a lot of complexity and with people wanting updates, I skipped it for the time being. And I'm not exactly sure how I'd make it a required field..... I'll have to look into that one.

Okay next fix:

If you are using the First Image in Post option, you will notice you only get a thumbnail when you update the post, and not when you create a new one. To fix this:

Goto the Manage Plugins tab in your ACP and edit New Thread - Save Thumbnail, Datamanager

You will then want to replace the Plugin PHP Code with:

im versus it, 95% not need that unnecessary ballast. the performance and server load is more important to not abuse it.

you are wrong in thinking that what for you is normal, so it should be for everybody.. yes, I really see users uploading on an image host their tiny thumbs for the thread.. and maybe have the thumb link to the image hosting service.. would you care of uploading to an image host service your thumbs for the thread??
IMO is more easy to see users stealing images they found surfing around, copy the link, and paste it in your board(mine too).
I dont even see why your arguing, probably, if one day we'll see the req I made, you'll have a nifty switch in the ACP, "host thumbs on your server?", yes and no.. so you can keep you images outside, and have a slow thread list, that you dont know how long it will keep the thumbs, while I will have a lighting fast thread list with the thumbs staying in their place as long as the thread is not deleted.. everybody's happy!:D

Thanks for the great mod. It seems to work well except for one issue.

When I create a new thread, the thread does not appear. Only the first thread I created shows in the forum, the others not at all. The threads only show when I turn off the plugin , or switch to 'first img', but that's not useful when we use the attachment system so much.

Tell me what the Database error you get is when using that script. You can get the actual error in the source of the page.

tlwwolfseye, I mean give me the DataBase Error. Goto the file in your web browser, then when the Database Error page comes up, view the source of the file and at the very bottom there is a detailed SQL error.

when i add this mod i only get 1 thread per page with the image from the first attachment. i did the manual and auto edits to test it out and its doing the same thing.

let me know the steps to fix this and its a great mod for my forum. hopefully we can get it fixed.

when i add this mod i only get 1 thread per page with the image from the first attachment. i did the manual and auto edits to test it out and its doing the same thing.

Thanks for developing this mod. It comes in handy when posting YouTube videos with the thumbnail images.

I had to set the width property in the AdminCP options in order to get the image to show. New threads are now working fine with URL images. However, I notice that when I edit a thread it doesn't want to show the thumbnail URL input box. I manually edited the templates, including the "editpost" one. Any suggestions?

Update: I got the image URL box to appear on an edit by clicking on the "Go Advanced" button, at least for adding a fresh, new thumbnail onto an old thread.

I wish I could assist, as I'm using the URL method and I'm new to this mod. It looks like those broken image links are there because the threads in question do not have any attached images in them, and as I recall the attachments have to be in the first post within each thread. Not sure if there's a method to avoid these kinds of broken links for attachments, though, and I'll be watching this thread for results, too.

There is an ACP setting called "Show in what forums?" where you put the forum ID of the forum(s) you want thumbnails to show for into the text box separated by commas.

ACP > vBulletin Options > Thread Thumbnails Options > Show in what forums?

Ive got the mod set to show the thumbnail of an attachment, however when an attachment isnt included within a thread, it just shows a red X.

I added a link to show a "no image" picture, but it still seems to be looking for an attachment when one hasnt been included.

I don't have vB 4.0 and I actually don't even have admin access to the forum I had used to develop it on. So basically, I have no way to do it, even if I wanted to.

The attachments is a known problem, and because I didn't have a working development server that supported attachments, I could never debug the issue.

Sorry for the lack of support lately, but my computer took a dive and I retired from admin on the vB forum that I had been running.

There is also no option to display it on the forumhome, although I'm not exactly sure why you would want that anyway when the thumbnails are for an individual thread and not the forum.

At this time, I have most of the functionality ported over to vB4. The issues I'm still trying to deal with is the threadbit Auto-Template edit, Attachments and Search integration (search has changed a lot).

I've also been improving things quite a bit, like allowing any CSS style on the thumbnail, so you can specify width, height, max-width, max-height, margins, borders and any other CSS property you wish to apply to the thumbnails.
