Welcome Thread Upon Registration

This mod creates a welcome thread when a new member registers.

Features controlled via the ACP (See screenshot)

- Thread Title
- Thread Message
- Forum Location
- Post Icon
- Which User Creates Thread
- Thread Placed In Moderation
- Create Thread Before/After Email Activation
- Have a Random Title https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/
- Have Random Thread Content https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/
- Post From a Random Member https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/
- Post a Random Icon https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/

When is the thread created?

You now have the choice via the ACP! A thread can be created as soon as a member registers, or if you use email activation on your board, you can have the thread created once they have activated their email.

Boards that require an admin to approve new users

This mod has an option to place new threads into moderation. Once the new user has been approved via an admin, you can then release the new thread.

https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/ New Features in Version 1.2 https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/

Does your welcome forum look a little bit "samey" like this?
http://www.doverlocals.co.uk/welold.PNG

Same old thread title, same old post icon, same old user posting the thread and when you go inside it has the same old content?

Well maybe I could interest you in the latest version of this mod!

http://www.doverlocals.co.uk/welnew.PNG

You decide on four titles and the content of four threads! You can also select the UserID's of who you want the threads to be created by. You can also select to have random post icons! - All controlled via the ACP.

Its all random. Thread title one doesnt belong to thread content one and thread title two doesnt belong to thread content two. With this mod when a member registers, thread title one may be posted with the contents of thread content four and thread title three might be posted with thread content two etc. The same goes with the UserID's and the post icon.

Screenshots
The screenshots show the ACP in version 1.2. I was unable to fit it all into one image, so had to split the image in half.

Although I have marked this as supported im a very new coder and this is my first release. I have tested it by signing up over 100 users on my test board and as yet there have been no glitches.
If there are any errors, I will try my best to resolve them, however as being new im still learning the ropes.

Version History
v1.0 - First release 28/05/09 (98 d/l)
v1.1 - Thread creation after email activation added / Post Icon added 28/05/09
v1.2 - Random titles/UserID/Thread content/Post icons 30/05/2009 (49 d/l)
v1.2.1 - Allows you to have the members name created as a link to their profile (88 d/l)
v1.2.2 - Fixed the "unregistered" bug

That was the mod I was using on my forum, but I thought id recode it for 3.8 giving it ACP settings. With that mod it also dosent update the post count of the user set to make the thread, this mod has that resolved.

Quite possibly. Leave it with me and i'll see what I can do.

Post Icon addition has been added.

Regarding the PM, I would suggest using the "Send welcome PM" thats built into vbulletin and add something like this into it

Hi $username,

Welcome to the forum!

I have created a new thread to welcome you to the forum, why not pop by and say hello!
Welcome $username (http://www.mysite.com/forumdisplay.php?f=2)

Use the URL to take them to the forum where the welcome threads are created.

I have changed the message to $username has just joined the board. Take a second to send them a PM or leave a visitor message to welcome them. This allows my current members to be notified when someone new joins. Is there a way to hotlink the $username to the new members profile. That way my current members can quickly go to their profile and leave a visitor message for them

I figured this out, you have to enter your id number which is 1 if your wanting the admin to be the one to create the threads..

Very strange. Ive just created a load of test users using email verification and the thread was created. Did this happen just the once?

Did this happen just the once or has it happened repeated times?

I did most of the testing with non email verification, however i'll do some more using verification and see if I can iron it out.

I am having a very bizarre issue. The mod created a post as it should. No one can access the posts to even read them. I am full admin so I would think I should at least see them when no one else can. I have checked and rechecked permissions. Any idea?

Whatever the cause I am removing this mod for the time being but since I cannot explain how this happened I do not trust it for now. I expect to revisit this in the future but this required me to remove the 2 entries via phpadmin manually and I won't risk further issues until I can determine why.

Hi Merjawy,
The last release was a minor update to allow the profile to be linked to the username in the thread content.

Ive added the issue of the mod creating threads with "Unregistered" to the bug list and currently working on a fix at present, however as im new to coding its taking a little longer then normal. If a member registers and verifies their email whilst still logged in it works, however if the log out and then confirm their email address, its creating the issue of them showing as "Unregistered" as vbulletin does not auto log members in when verifying email.

The options until the bug fix is released is either

1 - Turn the mod off via the ACP
2 - Switch to the "create thead before user activation" int he mod settings. This will then create the thread before the user confirms their email address.
3 - Uninstall

Not ideal I know, however this is the only bug reported with the mod and I am working on it at present.

You say it created the thread, but wouldn't let anyone read it, but then you go onto say that you couldnt see it? Do you mean it created the thread but wouldn't allow anyone to view the content when the click on the thread title?

This mod doesn't have any usergroup settings. It uses your default usergroup settings. It also doesnt add any tables to your database - It just updates the default vbulletin database to add "1" onto the postcount of the user that makes the post - so im not sure what youve removed via phpmyadmin!

To clarify a bit. The mod created the post. The post could not be read. It showed as a new topic in the forum but no one, including myself as administrator could read its content. I deleted the physical "post" from the database because there was simply no other way to reach it as it kept on saying I do not have enough permissions to view the post. I am sure I missed something but not sure what. I will use it again but for now I want to experiment on my test site to find out why that happened.

Heres a strange thing thats happening. It's not a conern at all, just posting the issue. Same Ip's.

With you're software I assigned a cute Admin as the defualt ID "Who wouldn't?" , but what I noticed was that every new singup that has had a thread created for them also seems to share the same IP address of her? I tried it with myself and the samething happened.
Like I said, not an issue, but something to be aware of.

I installed the update, and this is what every see's when clicking on the new thread. The older version works just fine. Just giving a heads up
Any ETA for the update?

USER, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.

Next version released that solves the issue of "Welcome Unregistered"

If you wish to link to the members profile in the text of the thread, you will need to do it the following way:

Hi $username, welcome to the forum!

You can visit the profile of $username here ($vboptions[bburl]/member.php?u=$userid) to leave a welcome message!

If you try and make $username the link, it will throw an error. If you was making $username the link in the previous version, please change it so any other word except $username is the link!

It would be possible, however its an idea im not overly keen on. Saying hello to a member is fine, but I dont like the idea of posting on behalf of the member.

Thats cool. I just changed the wording on the forum I used this on. A user didn't understand we were welcoming new members. But it works very well. Thanks.

I have a problem!

Seems like this program is randomly selecting the IPs too!! :o This makes IP checking for fakers/double accounts very hard! For example it has now given me Polish and German IPs (from other users) even though I'm from Finland.

I need some kind of fix for this as soon as possible. Ideal solution would be of course that it would use the poster's last used IP, or no IP at lal (if possible?).

This just doesn't work right. :)

Even after the update many threads are not created and I just got one titled "Welcome" and subject of just "Glad you could find us !".

Great idea but it simply doesn't work as planned. I'll be uninstalling this now.

Ive tested this with hundreds on sign ups on a new vb installation and cant replicate this error with the new version. It dosent help with not being told what your subject and text content is and whether your using before or after email verification.

I installed this on my board (vB 3.8.3)

Installation and setup went fine.

However, I have my vB Registration Options configured so that a user must confirm registration through email before registration is complete. When the user clicks the link in the email, they are confronted with a Database error.

The Database error email I get, states the following:

MySQL Error : Table 'XXXXXXXXXX.useractivation' doesn't exist

However, my table name for the useractivation table is XXXXXXXXXX.vb_useractivation.

I tried a test account...got the same database error everyone else is getting when they register.

Disabled your product...and now email confirmation works.

So...it would seem this mod is not compatible with 3.8.3. Currently, your mod is disabled on my board until you can direct me on how to resolve this issue.

Your mod version that I am using is version 1.2.2.

Ive put an example in the ACP settings.

$bbuserinfo[username] ($vboptions[bburl]/member.php?u=$userid)

When I used your suggested above like quoted as,

$username and BBcode can be used

To post a link to the new members profile, use the code below

$bbuserinfo[username] ($vboptions[bburl]/member.php?u=$userid)

If you do not wish the thread content to be random, copy and paste the same text into the three boxes below.

is dosn't run in my trial. If I used just $username without URL, it's very well.

Does it fixed on NEW release 1.2.2?

I found some other problems with this mod.
1. All new welcome posts are moderated even after turning off the thread moderation option.
2. When using more than 1 user for the thread creator option, it creates new threads from those users but only 1 thread has the name of the new member. The other threads have only the welcome message without the name of the new user.

I've read through this entire thread...I installed this yesterday, had it set to post the thread *after* registration...each thread came with a duplicate thread that had no username in it, ip addresses of ALL the new members I welcomed (since it was set to post from my username) were ALL associated with my username, and the titles were all the same...no randomness as yet lol.... some of these issues have been posted by several others before me and not answered yet the mod says it's supported...will there be any support forthcoming for the issues posted?

I have uninstalled this mod for now...would be awesome if the remaining issues could be fixed :)

We are about to remove this Modification, there seems to be a security flaw, or weird security related issue, regarding this.

Perhaps others could report back.

To test:

If you have this mod fully working.

Look at the new thread greeting, and who it is posted by ( ours is set to 1 of 3 or 4 mods , selected at random)

Take a note of their IP ( your MOD that is )

Now look at the IP of the new member they just greeted !

The IP's match !

Now what is causing this. We have a support thread ongoing at vb.com and here
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?p=1875033#post1875033

Incidentally, this must be TESTED before the new member posts !

Fix for the DB error after email click for activation:

Find in the plugin "Welcome thread upon registration -> register_activate_start"$useridnumber = $db->query_first("
SELECT userid
FROM useractivation
WHERE activationid = '" . $vbulletin->db->escape_string($vbulletin->GPC['i']) . "'

");Replace with$useridnumber = $db->query_first("
SELECT userid
FROM " . TABLE_PREFIX . "useractivation
WHERE activationid = '" . $vbulletin->db->escape_string($vbulletin->GPC['i']) . "'

");No more database errors.

Cloudrunner

To get it to truly randomize ...

In BOTH "welcome thread upon registration" plugins:

Find:$rand_title = array_rand($title, 4);Replace with:$rand_title = array_rand($title);Find:$rand_text = array_rand($pagetext, 4);Replace with:$rand_text = array_rand($pagetext);Find:$threaddm->setr('pagetext', $pagetext[$rand_text[0]]);
$threaddm->setr('title', $title[$rand_title[0]]);Replace with:$threaddm->setr('pagetext', $pagetext[$rand_text]);
$threaddm->setr('title', $title[$rand_title]);

This fixes the problems I have found. I will post any more fixes if I find any other problems.

Thank you for this awesome mod! :)

I have this weird problem, and would be grateful if someone could help me sort it out.

I have entered the ID's of the post icons I want to use for the welcome thread when it is generated. However, the mod seems to not recognize them and uses its own icons. And yes, I am sure that I am entering the ID, and not the display order of the post icons.

e.g. I first entered these IDs: 28,34,24

The ID's of the icons it uses are: 2 and 3

Then I entered only 28.

Now it uses icon with ID 2.

Does the mod recognize only the first digit of the ID's entered?

On other thing, if I may mention. I have 2 separate categories of post icons. One with the default vbulletin ones and another with my own personal selection. I don't think that it should matter, since the ID of every post icon is unique, regardless of category. Still thought I'd mention it.

Hope someone can make some sense out of this. Thanks!

abdulbasitsaeed
10-16-2009, 07:10 PM
OK. Just to add a few more things.

When no post icon ID is given, it uses the paper icon as has been mentioned before.

I'm using the "make thread after email verification" option, and it seems to create multiple threads with some new registrations. And of these multiple threads, only one will have the username given. The rest simply say..."Welcome ," instead of "Welcome user,"

Any idea what's going wrong here? Is it not compatible with 3.8.4?

Mr. W
10-17-2009, 01:21 AM
____This modification seems to be better, and a lot more full featured than this one: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=165951

____However, it does do one thing that yours doesn't appear to do, or allow for. When a new user registers, can you add an option in the ACP where the thread will appear to have been written by that very user (the one who just registered)? If you added that, then that would make this modification nearly perfect for it's purpose.

____Another idea that builds on this, if it's not too hard to implement, would be to have the user automatically subscribe to this new Introduction thread. Again, this would be an option within the ACP. If you added this as well, then this modification would indeed be perfect for it's purpose.

I got a serious database issue with this mod. I was wondering if there was a fix for it. It happens when a user registers for the site. They register and then when they get the activation e-mail and try to click the link the board gives them a database error. Here is the error.

Database error in vBulletin 3.8.4:

Invalid SQL:

SELECT userid
FROM useractivation
WHERE activationid = '5caae7dd108e1765562bcdeab25f2b44a020a0a2';

Fix for the DB error after email click for activation:

Find in the plugin "Welcome thread upon registration -> register_activate_start"$useridnumber = $db->query_first("
SELECT userid
FROM useractivation
WHERE activationid = '" . $vbulletin->db->escape_string($vbulletin->GPC['i']) . "'

");Replace with$useridnumber = $db->query_first("
SELECT userid
FROM " . TABLE_PREFIX . "useractivation
WHERE activationid = '" . $vbulletin->db->escape_string($vbulletin->GPC['i']) . "'

");No more database errors.

Thanks

Is it not compatible with 3.8.4?

same issue here also running the latest 3.8.4 P1.

same issue here also running the latest 3.8.4 P1.

I think I found out when that happens, though haven't found a way around it.

The plugin creates a thread without the username of the newly registered account when the user clicks on the "Activation link" sent to them, and for some reason (slow dialup connection etc.), the Activation page does not load. Every time the user clicks the link (to load the activation page), a nameless thread is created. Only when the page fully loads does the thread created contain a name, e.g. Welcome XYX!

"powerful_rogue", any idea whether you would be updating this plugin for version 4 or not?

Hi,

I no longer use vbulletin as I have moved over to IPB, so there wont be any updates.

Anyone that feels they wish to carry this mod on, please do so.

Hi,

I no longer user vbulletin as I have moved over to IPB, so there wont be any updates.

Anyone that feels they wish to carry this mod on, please do so.

I have started to port this over to vb4.0

After seeing the bugs posted here it will take me some time to port it over and work out all the bugs and include the ideas posted here.

I imagine with in the next day or two I will have a working beta version posted.

I have it almost done all but one error I do believe.

Here is the error I can't figure out is any one cares to take a peek.
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=229458

As soon as I fix that error I am releasing the beta release. I do believe I fixed all the errors in this thread.

this is a great idea, I salute the original poster idea and thank for his efforts to try to make it work, as well as the others who had fixed the bugs.

However, is there a way the bugs fixed and all that can come in product upgrade, let's say version 1.3 or so? I run 3.8.4 and tagged install right before installing but then I took my time to read the whole thread and now I am not installing this until find something similar fully debugged. Is there any other developer that already came up with it under other name? or just BBR-APBT is in charge of this for now and for the vB4.0 (which we are not upgrading since still in beta).

Do you have a test site?

Try to install the version for 4.0 on the 3.8 test site. It just may work!!!

No test site yet... all the test I run them on the demo vesion but as you know no products/mods can be installed :(
I will give try on the low activity hours on the forum, thanks a lot for the info, I thought the 4.0 was a completely rewrite so the product will not work there.

Let you know! :up:

This really doesn't use much on the vbulletin side of things that have changed. Which is why I said it may work. I don't have a test site for 3.8 only for 4.0 or I would have tested it.

I've installed product-welcomethread140609.xml (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=100556&d=1244982497) this one. It sends the messages with random users but random messages won't work on my 3.8.4 board. In addition to that it send only 4 of the users while I have more than 4 users written to post a welcome thread.

MySQL Version : I got this same error today. I'm no expert at SQL, but I know enough to know that it appears one of the plugins is trying to SELECT the id from a table name, without accounting for your table's prefix first. I was able to fix it this way.

Like I said, I'm no expert, so use at your own risk. But it makes sense to me. Maybe someone more versed in MySQL can verify.

In Plugins & Products >> Plugin Manager >> Product : Welcome Thread, edit the plugin that uses the register_activate_start hook. Add the code in red:
$useridnumber = $db->query_first("
SELECT userid
FROM " . TABLE_PREFIX . "useractivation
WHERE activationid = '" . $vbulletin->db->escape_string($vbulletin->GPC['i']) . "'

Be careful with the syntax. The syntax is important. Don't just assume that quote mark or period or what have you is unimportant. It needs to be there.

I have a strange problem, it's posting threads when people register, but also it's posting random threads when people havent registerd. So the thread will just be "welcome" with no username
