What is the difference between Mods and Hacks, and what are the requirements for each?

I think what he's trying to determine is the difference between add-ons and template modifications. (I tend to think of an add-on as a "mod" and a template modification as a "hack".)

Where add-ons require little if any template modification on the part of the Administrator, template modifications are non-automated and the way we USED to make changes to our sites before 3.5 was released. And I don't miss those days at all! :D

No difference at all, two words for the same thing. :)

okay so no difference...thanks everyone for clearing this up. I'm just starting to get the hang of software. I added my own banner, my first mod last night...so proud.

Next up, installing more Smilies. As a newbie to FTP it took some trial and error using FileZilla for the first time but I got the hang of it too.

As for the Google Ads, I see ads at the top (below the banner) and at the bottom of the page. How do I remove the ads from the bottom and place ads on the right side as vertical banner ads? And do they really produce a source of income???

Thanks,
Anne

It's all so foreign to me, everything from AdminCP, FTP, Server Trasfers:eek:... I'm scared witless every time I am in the AdminCP so thanks for the words of encouragement.

I USED to be for me too... it gets better over time and recently I encouraged a nice lady on a large site and she also recently showed me a thing or two :p so stick with it and take your time. We all need encouragement when things "look" intimidating :D.

Speaking of which, how do I filter profanity in my forum? Very important!

Thanks... that shouldn't be too bad to do, hopefully.

Okay, I know that there will be visitors and free members. But is there a way to add third option ---a subsription for paid members to view private areas that visitors and free members can't view? Is this even possible? I hope so. I like the list on the registration page on this forum: www.degreeforum.net/register.php4

ACP -> Paid Subscriptions -> Add New Subscription

To make a board that only they (and staff) can see, create one, and go to
ACP -> Forums and Moderators -> Forum Permissions -> Find board -> block guests, free members, and whoever else you don't want to have access
