vbNetwork
Summary
This add-on gives you the ability to share forums with other message boards without having to share any database information. The plugin runs through webservices and uses XML.
Release Notes
Currently the installation is easy but if you want to set up and run your own network it will help if you're familiar with XML. Joining an already existing network is fairly simple.
This plugin is developed using vBulletin 3.8.X and being tested on 3.6.X and 3.8.X. If it works on both of those, I will assume it works on 3.7.X.
If you would like my help writing versions for phpBB, IPB or other message board software, please feel free to contact me.
If you are interested you can join my existing network, but please note that it is mostly a trolling-based community of boards. Feel free to start your own network with other boards.

Sounds like a great idea, but how about security risks of incoming packets? Could be exploited by hackers and those who want to flood your site.

I'm not sure how you are merging username etc.... as they show up different on each site.
very interested in this, but I don't see how it's working properly with different boards and different users etc... can each site post to the shared section without having to register?

Each network has a password which has to be verified before any packets are processed.

Posts from other boards show up on your board as Guest posts would. The username is constructed from the user's name on the other board and the board's "node code". Hence, if someone on another board the username "Fred" and that board's node code is XYZ, then posts from that user will show up on your board as a Guest with name "Fred@XYZ"

You should probably find a network you want to join before installing this plugin. Or have another board ready to join a network you want to start.

All the webservices are XML based, so someone familiar with XML and phpBB should be able to write a phpBB plugin pretty easily.

I wonder how good phpBB's plugin system is. I may take up the task myself when I have some time over the summer.
Some time this week I'll put together a page for people to 'register' their networks and compile a list of supported messageboard software. Though, this list will be just 'vBulletin' for the time being.

This is an awesome mod! I'm bookmarking this now and seeing how this mod goes along in the dev process. This would only help certain forums, as opposed to hurting them.
I'm wondering if anybody would like to join my network? I run http://zomgstuff.net
It's a closely-knit community that focuses on media, politics, gaming, and technology. We've got 10k members and almost 180k posts. If you run a forum with some related theme, PM me if you're interested.
Edit:
Does this include members online from the other boards on your board?
Can you also select what forum categories you want to share from either board?
Also, how does moderation work? If a mod on one site deletes something or moves it, is it moved/deleted from the other boards?

Hi! Your mod sounds great! But i got a question:
This plugin is developed using vBulletin 3.8.2 and has been used with 3.6.X and 3.7.X, though I will not support backwards compatibility anymore.
Does it mean, that a combination linke vb 3.7.2 and vn 3.8.2 wont work?

I've got a question.... what about forum permissions? If site A has this shared forum set to be 'private' (only members of a special usergroup may see/post in it), then will this mod work since the posts from the other sites are set to be written as 'guests' and Site A doesn't allow regular guests to post in this forum? (I hope that made sense.)

I'll release an update in a few days that will allow you to do this in the 'Network Manager".
Right now you'll have to remove the network in your database under the 'network' table..

Forum permissions do not carry across the network. So yes, you could have a network forum be private on one messageboard and have that same network forum be public on another.
I can't recall which permission it is off hand that allows Guest to post, but if I remember correctly as long as they're allowed to in the Usergroup (not necessarily in any forums) then the plugin should work.

I will then add a few forums on my board to coordinate bvBulletin network, giving useful information like "what kind of network" they, admin information and contact info, etc.

i'm concerned about the dupe content too. If google bans or lowers site's rank/value cos of this, then it quickly becomes publisher's problem :)
i am sick of modifying sites so search engines may like em, but considering google ads is good income, i dont want to risk it.

If you're so concerned about duplicate content, you can always hide your network forums from Guests. This would prevent Google from crawling the forum and registering duplicate content.

Not under a single license, you must have 2 licenses if you want to run vbulletin on 2 diff subs, or 2 installs in general. I know this for a fact because I specifically asked the vb support a while back.

Doesn't seem to on my network. I have my cron set up to run as a Unix cron, so the users on my board don't see any delay. I know of a couple of boards that use vBulletin's built in Scheduled Tasks and it doesn't seem to be a problem with them either.
Of couse, the largest network this has been tested on is 5 messageboards all with moderate activity at best.

Do the nodes send and receive their packets to everyone else in the network or do they send their packets up to a hub, which then redistributes them to the other nodes?
can u make it just for attachments
server one only for forums

All the nodes send and receive packets to and from all the other nodes on the network. There is no "central hub" that distributes packets.

I got a few simple questions before I have a go with this great little mod.
Lets say that I have two websites in my network and I start a thread on website 1 and after a few days I edit my post on website 1, will the edit also port across to website 2?
On website 1 I have banned a member from the site but they sign up to website 2 and make a post in the networks forum will this post appear on site 1?
A thread is started by a member on site 1 and the administrator on site 2 decides to delete that thread from his website; 1. How will this effect site ones thread and 2. will further posts to the thread on site one be put back onto site 2's forums?
Cheers

Lets say that I have two websites in my network and I start a thread on website 1 and after a few days I edit my post on website 1, will the edit also port across to website 2?
Negative. Edits do not propagate to network.
On website 1 I have banned a member from the site but they sign up to website 2 and make a post in the networks forum will this post appear on site 1?
There is an option to ban usernames on certain networks in the configuration.
This brings up a good point. If the user signs up with the same email or username on website 2 and is banned on website 1, the post should be blocked. Or perhaps submitted for approval. I'll add this to my todo list.
For now, you can use the settings in vBulletin options.
A thread is started by a member on site 1 and the administrator on site 2 decides to delete that thread from his website; 1. How will this effect site ones thread and 2. will further posts to the thread on site one be put back onto site 2's forums?
This is another configuration option. You can have it so that one of two things happen:
1) the posts from the deleted thread get tossed
2) the posts from the deleted (ie. unknown) thead will go into a new thread created automatically with the title of "Unknown Network Thread ID: XYZ"

Negative.
AdminCP -> Usergroup Manager -> Unregistered / Not Logged In -> "Can view Forum"
This option must be set to "Yes" for the plugin to work.
Forum permissions override this setting. So you can still block "Unregistered / Not Logged In" users from a specific forum. But the option above must be "Yes" in order for the plugin to work.

Just as an addendum, I have a seperate server for mysql - could that possibly be causing the problem?
I.e. my forums are hosted on one server and the database is hosted on another (they are connected by a hard wire though).
If so, is there any way to add support for forums that use separate servers for mysql?
Cheers,

I'm not sure -why- that would be causing a problem, as I use the same database calling methods that vBulletin uses. But from the looks of the error you posted, that seems to be the problem.
Edit: if you go into your AdminCP -> vBulletin Options -> vbNetwork Options and set "Network Error Log Level" to "0" (which I think it is by default), this may fix your problem.

Wow this mod is complicated to set up.
Some detailed documentation on how to do this would be great.
Doesn't make sense to release something so complicated with vague instructions. How do we beta test if we can't get it working?
It reminds me of those vague Ikea instructions on how to assemble a table. By the time you're done, you've assembled a shelf instead.

Just one little funny to report, when I turn on the "Check Network Emails" function, it posts a copy of incoming posts in a totally unrelated and non networked forum. I turned off the email check function and all is good again.
@Jordan I will try and put together some easy to follow instructions, having just set 3 boards up on a new network I think I have it beat.

I see the problem but I'm not too sure how to fix it. I'll look into it some more and get back to you. Hopefully before I take this out of Beta.
I did some looking into with this. It appears it may be a bug with vBulletin, as this is the second product I've found with the same error type.
It correctly establishes a connection with our external mysql server, but still attempts to connect to a non-existent local one. The includes/config.php file only defines one master external MySQL server.
So a warning is spitted out due to the local connection issue, but successfully connects to the external one. But since this warning is tossed out into the script, the script ceases to work.
So. How does one report such a bug to vBulletin?

If you are getting error three then you need to look at the actual board settings for instance, if your make a post on your main forum and have 10 images in the post (including smilies) but the node board is only setup to have 3 images in a post (including smilies) then you will get this error.
That is only one example there can be many configuration factors that can cause error 3

Considering that the post made by vbnetwork is a guest post, do you think it's necessary to give permisions to unregistered users to post?
Edit to the former: it changes nothing. By the way, I succeded in posting from a satellite board to the main one, but I still need for the main one to distribute its post to the satellite(s) which still displays error 3.
Edit Again:
Checking at the server's log, I see this message:
[08/Oct/2009:13:20:40 -0400] "POST /network/service.php HTTP/1.0" 200 89 "-" "-"
See? The post message is there, but it's empty.

I'm now about to open my 5th vbulletin board, all on very similiar topics, how scalable is this mod? my largest forum is about 34k members and has about 50 different forums, of about 15 I'd like to share with at least 2 other sites.
Any update on getting it to work with phpbb?
Does this go into the root directory?
2. Create the following directories with the following permissions
./network/packets/incoming - chmod 777
./network/packets/outgoing - chmod 777
I'm having problems with it. Every time I try to import the product (Step 3), the import locks up and my diskspace gets filled up, knocking my site off. At least I think this is what's causing the problems.

My apologies for having been absent for so long, I did hear from the author and have revamped the instructions to what I hope will be a little easier to follow, I will post and attach them -
vbNetwork Version 0.9.5
Requirements/Notes
________________________________________
This plugin is being developed on 3.8.X of vBulletin and has been tested on 3.6.X and 3.7.X
PHP's libcurl package needs to be installed on your server.
The usergroup "Unregistered / Not Logged" must be given permission to view network forums and in Usergroup Manager to post and reply, you can disable guest posting in the forum permissions but must be enabled in the usergroup settings.
It is recommended that your User Registration Options allow usernames up to 25 characters in length.
Installation
________________________________________
1. Upload all files in the UPLOAD directory, preserving the directory structure.
2. Create the following directories with the following permissions
./network/packets/incoming - chmod 777
./network/packets/outgoing - chmod 777
3. Go to your AdminCP and install the product's XML file (product-network.xml or product-network-3.5.X.xml if you're using vBulletin 3.5)
Instructions for Those Running a Network or acting as the central site
Steps for Creating a Network
1. Go into your Control Panel and under Network Management select "Add New Network"
2. Fill out the information accordingly. Make sure that the "Network Admin" and "SelfID" match.
3. Under "Network Manager" select the newly created network (click on network name).
4. Under "Add a New Messageboard" enter in the information for your messageboard/site (The primary Board/site).
The "Node Code" should match what you entered under "Add New Network" under Self ID
Click Save.
Steps for Creating a Network Forum (Share Forum)
1. Under "Network Forum Manger" select "Add Network Forum".
2. Enter in a unique numeric Network Forum ID (This can be anything I just use three digits say 199).
3. Your board will automatically be subscribed to forums set as network forums with this number, see next step.
4. Use the Forum Manager to assign this network forum to a forum on your board, open the forum (edit) and scroll to the bottom, you will see a dropdown with 2 choices – Local or Networked. Select networked then enter the Network Forum ID below such as 199 as is the case above.
You can do this for more than one forum and the satellite boards will use the same setting in the forum they wish to share.
Steps for Adding a Mesasgeboard/Site to Your Network
1. Go into your Control Panel and under Network Manager select the desired network, as per set up in step 1, click on the name to open/edit.
2. Under "Add a New Messageboard" enter the information (as per below) for the new messageboard and click "Save Board".
Node Code – for this I usually use an abbreviation of the board/site that is going to be joining, normally 3 letters.(eg abc)
Board URL is the URL of the other board/site.
Service URL is the location of service.php EG http://www.anothermessageboard.com/network/service.php or http://www.anothermessageboard.com/forum/network/service.php
depending on the site setup.
3. Use the "Network Forum Manager" to add the new board to the desired network forums.
Open Network Forum Manager, click “Add Board to Forum” under the corresponding Forum ID (eg The 199 we assigned earlier)
Enter the node code you assigned earlier for the new site/board (eg abc)
4. Once again select the desired network in the Network Manager.
5. Under "XML Update" copy the XML from "Network Nodes" and "Network Forums" and send it to the admin of the new site/messageboard. The admin will use this XML to update the network info on their board.
6. Using the Network Manager again, under "Network Updates" select the boards on your network to send an update. Every board on your network will need an update with the new messageboard's info, so you should probably select every board.
7. Click "Send Updates".
Instructions for Those Joining a Network
Steps for Joining a Network
1. Go into your Control Panel and under Network Management select "Add New Network"
2. The network admin should have supplied you with the information on this screen.
Network Name – set by central site
Network Admin – set by central site
Self ID – set by central site that would be the abc example above.
Network password – set by central site
Click Save
3. Get back to "Network Manager" under "Network Management" and open/edit the network you just added.
4. The network admin should have supplied you with XML for "Network Nodes" and "Network Forums". Paste the XML into the appropiate field and click "Save".
Your board is now configured to receive packets from the network, but you will have to assign a forum to receive and send posts see next step.
Steps for Adding/assigning a Network Forum
1. Notify your network admin that you wish to subscribe to a certain network forum, he will give you the Network Forum ID (The 199 example above) and add you to the share forum as well.
2. Once your network admin has confirmed that you have been subscribed to the network forum, use the "Forum Manager" to assign a local forum to the network forum (this can be any forum on your site, some people set up a specific forum for this purpose). These options are near the bottom of the forum configuration under "Network Options".
Select Networked Forum from the drop down and enter the Network Forum ID (eg 199) below, then save it.
Posts from both sites will now appear in that forum.
Final Notes
When adding boards, removing board, adding network forums, removing network forums, adding messageboards to and removing messageboards from network forums, all the boards on your network will need to be updated with this new information.
Open the Network Manager, open/edit the affected network.
Check the boxes in the list of subscribed sites to select those that will receive updates.
Click “Send Updates”
Go to 'Scheduled Task Manager' and set your network delivery to run (you may have to enable it) as often as you need it to. (find the network and open/edit, if everything is set to * it will send/receive every minute)
To run a test, make a post in the shared forum, then go to 'Scheduled Task Manager' and click “Run Now” under the edit button.
Cron Configuration
________________________________________
Your board will periodically send out updates (mostly new posts/threads). This is done through a cron, either a vBulletin "Scheduled Task" or a standard Unix cron.
In 'Scheduled Task Manager' the installer will create a task that is by default disabled.
You must enable to the scheduled task and set it to run as often as you like.
Alternatively, you can run a system cron. The cron must be run from the directory of the deliver.php script and passed the 'console' parameter. An example is below:
cd /directory/of/your/forum/network; php -f deliver.php console

Currently support for this plugin is minimal. I can be contacted at zethon@gmail.com.
I hope to one day add network voting support and pm support.
This plugin was originally developed in Summer 2006 and has undergone a lot of revision and bug fixing since. Please send me any bugs you find in the network software and I will do my best. Feel free to contribute code as well.
If you are interested in joining your board to our existing network, send me an email and we'll be happy to have you. But please realize that the content of our network is based on trolling and may not be suitable for some message boards.
If you need some help starting up your own network, let me know and I'll do my best to help out.

Not dead. Just stagnant. I've put this project up on Google Code to help manage bugs and feature requests. If you encounter a bug please enter an issues in the Google Code Issue tracker: http://code.google.com/p/vbnetwork/
I have a messageboard interested in networking with my board which will help in the development of the plugin. I hope to make updates to it soon and take it out of beta and have vb 4.0 support.

How does this modification fair with word censoring and images? Do posts that are displayed from another site on your network become censored? What happens if a user on another site abuses by posting disgusting images. Can you ban that 1 person's posts from being visible?
If you use a word censor the posts on your forum will get censored and posts sent to other forums will also be censored... Uncensored forums will see uncensored words in their own posts but still see the **** in posts from censored forums- basically the way it should work.
You can ban users from another site in the network options.

Sounds like the plugin cannot write to the packets directories. Make sure that /network/packets/outgoing and /network/packets/incoming both have write access. Do chmod 777 on both, as instructed in the docs.

Hi, i read on the 4.0 version of this plugin that you found a way to show avartars with the usernames.
Is this fix also availbale for the 3.8 version?

you should be able to get the avatars working by going to Plugins & Products -> Plugin Manager and enable the the "vbNetwork: Add network avs and stuff if it's a network user and forum." I am not sure why it is disabled by default
I run a 3.8.x forum and I have a friend who runs a 4.0.x forum. I am moving my database on his server. We want to share one section of the forum across both sites. Is this possible?
If it is, I'm guessing he would have to install the 4.x version of this mod and I install this one?

I'm having trouble viewing newly added forums on the actual site. I can add them and view them in the ACP with no problems but I can't see them on the actual index page.

I know of the 3 forums in the example (mine is 1) one of them is a 4.0.x forum.

Awesome. Now if only I could show the same members online on both forums.
Does this addon affect performance?
BirdOPrey5

I run it as a cron job and have noticed no hit to performance. The data it's reading and sending is no more then displaying a thread every few minutes anyway so I can't see it ever being an issue.
Installed this mod, and when I click on Network Forum Manager, I get this:
(I removed my ip and username)
Database error in vBulletin 3.8.5:
Invalid SQL:
SELECT DISTINCT subid FROM vb3_network_sub

Is this because I use a table prefix? I saw this post (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=2065043&postcount=10) on the 4.0 version
NM, if you use a table prefix, make the diff changes you find here, it will fix it:

I've been wanting this FOREVER. What I'd like to see is this available for multiple forum software packages. phpbb would be a great one to start with. I envision something like that become some sort of standard and eventually working its way into core forum software functionality.
This sort of thing was common place with the old BBS's (ala FIDOnet, WWIVnet, etc).

moving threads into network forums sends posts into random threads on remote boards
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. move thread in non-network forum to a network forum
2. post in the thread
3. execute cron job
What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
If there is no network thread id for the thread, the remote board should
either reject the post or create the thread. Currently, the post seems to
be assigned to a random thread?
Has this been resolved?

I'm receiving a lot of XML parser errors (error code 3 when running the scheduled task) when using this mod.
For example, a post with regular quotes is fine:
I'm Matt, AKA "I.M.O.G."
But a post with these quotes is not:
I’m Matt, AKA “I.M.O.G.”
I'm running a network with 8 nodes, so I'm working at improving the parsing code to be a bit more liberal. I've also noticed you have to be careful about the settings on each board - depending on the image settings and such, you may receive errors if one board in the network has more liberal settings configured than another.

yeah, you need to make the max images and max number of characters per post equal on all the boards to prevent the risk of some messages not being accepted and throwing off the whole system. Learned that the hard way.

For anyone using this plugin, you may want to make the following changes to improve the way vbnetwork handles special characters:
Line 320 of "/forums/network/function_network.php" should read:
$xmlstr = '<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1"?>'."\n";
The line just below that should change "=" to ".=".
With that small change, you will eliminate a lot of "error code 3"/XML parsing errors, where the XML feeds are corrupted due to the use of special characters in posts.

i know this is quite old, but I dont see why it isnt working... I am using vb 3.8.11 and PHP 5.6.4 when I try to add new network, upon clicking save the page goes blank and nothing is added in the database.
I have tried going through the files and replacing =& with just a = but still no luck. anyone got his working?
