Changing the forum icons?

Hi

I got a question which I've tried to google myself through, but without any luck. I'm trying to figure out how to change the icons which shows new threads, no new threads and closed threads to completely individual icons instead. Like these guys have: http://www.realitymod.com/forum/

I'm clueless as of where to find the answers for this and I've spent the last hour trying to find it on google. Any answer as how to do this would be much appreciated.

It's default vb. Forum Manager > select the forum to Edit > Prefix for Forum Status Images
Prefix for Forum Status Images
Forum Status images are usually shown alongside the forum in a forum listings to indicate the read status.

This prefix must only contain alphanumerical characters, though the following are also allowed - _ / ., a folder name is also acceptable to be placed within the status icon directory.

The following images are currently in use for status icons, you will need to create images with the specified prefix to match.

forum_old.gif
forum_old_lock.gif

Can't seem to get the custom images to show up, instead where its supposed to be an icon, its now just blank. I've read this (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=179139&highlight=category+icons) thread and done exactly as explained, but still its not working :(

I run vBulletin 3.8.2
