Good way to build a forum?

Ok, so these are the forums I'm with and we need some ways to build it (Advertising, gaining members, etc). The niche is a chat and support type of forum (http://www.allboutlife.net/forums/)

I was wondering if anyone can spare some tips and tricks I can use as we grow, especially as a head start!
