Would it be as simple as creating a new transparent icon and naming it forum_new.gif and forum_old.gif respectively?

The reason I ask, is because I would love to have a different style that has different icons. For instance, can the default style use the default forum_new and forum_old icons, while a new style uses the custom ones? Or is the change universal?

Thanks in advanced!

yes.. - you can replace them inside statusicon folder

yes.. - you can specify the new statusicon folder in the style manager>style name> StyleVars

but make sure you put the whole statusicon folder into the new style folder, and then just replace the forum home icons(5 of them) according to their original name respectively.
