Please help explain plugins

My php knowledge is close to nill but from what i can gather is that if i wish to add certain features to my threadbit template like Download views, file size and a thanks button then i would need to create a plugin.

I have no experience with creating plugins so where would i start?

Start in the Articles forums. And also look in the manual. And, download simple mods and take a look at how they go about doing things.
