How to turn off the public messages sent to user profile?

How can I turn of the messages which are sent to a person's profile rather than their private messages? I'm getting a ton of messages in my profile, which I only check when I remember, which is once every couple months. I'm sure many are getting confused by this.

User CP > Edit Options > turn off Visitor Messages

You can turn off visitor messages in vboptions > user profile options > enabled user profile features
