View Full Version : Server Transition

So I posted this on vBulletin.com and failed to receive a solution to my problem. I figured I'd broaden my horizons and post the issue here. Hopefully we can all combine forces and put an end to my misery. Here's what has been happening:

I've looked all over the forums and I can't seem to find a solution for my problem. The threads I've read have fixed their issue (which was the same as mine), but none of those seem to work for me.

I am planning to migrate my forums to a dedicated server from shared hosting. So, to test it out before I actually did it, I dumped my database to a file and SSH'd that into the new server. Database is set up. I copied the forum directory from the old shared host into the new directory on the dedicated server.

I get this error when I try to view the forum path:

Invalid forum path specified! Please edit this file and be sure to include the correct path for your $forumpath variable. But I know I set it right. I uploaded a file that tells me that the path is "/home/admin/injectedgamers/briareborn/".

So I set that in the config, and I still get the same error. Here is my config file

Any ideas?

I am running vBulletin 3.8.1 w/ vBadvanced on Centos 5 (with Apache 2.2.3, mySQL 5 and PHP 5 w/ eaccelerator).
Here are the replies I got:

do you use vbadvance??

Yes, I use the latest version of vBadvanced. I didn't have to specify the forum path with the last webhost; I figured I didn't need to on my new server.

It is very rare that you need to set a forum path. Try commenting out that line.

Commenting it out does nothing, I'm afraid. Still the same $filepath error. Steve Machol has been very helpful, but we have been unable to solve the issue.

Honestly I don't see how you can get that error with that line commented out. And with it not commented out, then only way you can get that error is if the path is wrong. There really is the only explanation.

Lastly, I replied:

Here.. take a look at this.

Everything is configured EXACTLY correct.

So, what I ask of you, fellow vBulletin.org members.. is how we can solve this?

I will elaborate more on the server setup. It is running CentOs 5 with the latest Apache, PHP and SQL w/ lxadmin as the control panel. Would I be better off just wiping the OS and going with ubuntu and no control panel? I'm getting really irked here.

Find this line:
$config['Misc']['forumpath'] = '/home/admin/injectedgamers/briareborn/';
And change it to:
// $config['Misc']['forumpath'] = '/home/admin/injectedgamers/briareborn/';
It's not clear, but I think you may have tried that already?

Yeah, I had that commented out on my original shared host.

It doesn't seem to want to work on my new server. I guess it must be an issue with the box itself. Something must be configured incorrectly w/ Apache or another service.. Steve Machol suggested it might have something to do with symlinks.

That's way over my head.. as it's an unmanaged server (I don't usually need the kind of assistance a managed provider gives), it would be my problem to fix. If anyone could provide some insight on this issue.. you'd save me from my headache. ;\

Login to your box via SSH - and go into the path that you entered. Does it contain the expected contents?

Seeing as your running vbadvanced, did you edit the index.php file and correct the forumpath in that file?

public_html - index.php <-- this one ie.. cmps_index.php
forums - index.php or forums.php <-- not this one

I can't believe that I overlooked that.

ARRGHHH!

If you looked up embarassment in the dictionary, my picture would be right next to the definition. Thank you snakes, THANK YOU!

Problem Solved!

EDIT:
Also, is there a way to change the cookie domain from the database? 'cause I can't login to the forums because it doesn't save the cookie.

YW.

Upload tools.php from the do_not_upload folder to your admincp folder and run the script in the browser, reset your cookie domain.
