how do i set a particular template for a forum?

Hi,

I'm wanting to give one forum (meaning one category) a particular look so people can distinguish when they are in a private forum as opposed to the general forums. Is there a way I can set a particular template for one forum and force all users to use it? But the rest of the forum will use the normal template and people can change between styles.

By template, I assume you really mean style? If so, Forum Manager > select the forum > Custom Style for this Forum > select the style in the dropdown. Also, choose if you want to Override Users' Style Choice.
