Active Topics Linked to Front Page??

How do I do a smaller version of vbportal where I want to take just the active topics and link it some how to our front page. However I want the box its in no more than about 3"x2". I have never done any PHP or SQL programming so Id need an existing hack or a step by step procedure. Thanks.

This is an option that I want also. It is great to have dynamic content. I used a hack similar to this with one of the older versions of UBB and it was slick.
