View Full Version : Add-On Releases - User Countdowns & Countups

Got the inspiration for this mod here (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=107596). Problem is, that mod does not work anymore. We decided to write our own.

This product allows users to set up a countdown timer or countup timer. The timer can run in real time with the javascript counter, or just static. Admin can choose to show the timer in users sigs or in the postbit user info area.

Usergroup permissions are handled in the options area so you do not have to modify many usergroups one at a time.

This product was developed for Andy R (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/member.php?u=7590) from Social Knowledge (http://www.socialknowledge.net/) and released here for others to enjoy.

Enjoy!

Interesting mod. Is there any way it could be set up so certain Usergroups (say Mods & Admins) could place the countdown timer into a post or a way limit the forums where it can be added to a post (or their sig/postbit) by members?

Members on my site often start threads about an event they are running or will be attending. The first post usually contains the event details. It would be nice to have the countdown in that post.

Simply does not work on 3.8.1 for me..

Installed properly, shows up in USER CP, set the countdown and nothing shows in either signature or postbit depending what you chose.. set it to active=yes also.

Using default vB style so it can't be hooks issue...

Any ideas?

I've installed it just fine on my fresh install test forum and it works fine..

So it must be conflicting with other add-ons/mods?

I have it working on a 3.8.1 forum, so I would suggest its most definitely a conflict on your forum somewhere with another hack :)

I 2nd this suggestion! :up: They don't really stand out enough at the moment, and also the text spaced out over numerous lines - would prefer to have it on just one line, or two max.

Cheers :)

Installed and seemed to be working ok. Just two problems:

1) Not very clear to use if you want to have the counter count UP.
2) I set a time to count up from, then edited it and now the counter does not show in the post bit anymore, possible bug?

Hi,

I've just tested it on my localhost to see how it would react. This is a good addon but I like when there is only one signature per page/per user so I've installed the hack "Display only one signature per member per thread". But yours display the countdown all the time, in each posts. So there is a sort of "conflict" between them. Or is there a file modification to apply to solve this ?

Thanks.

But i think it would have more useful if it could shown in more area not only in users sigs and users info area

Hi Jafo,

Could you please give some support on how to make the countdown appear on one line.

Example:

My birthday is in:
8 Days, 4 Hours
52 Minutes, 31 seconds

To:

My birthday is in:
8 Days, 4 Hours, 52 Minutes, 31 seconds

I've looked at the template and can't work out how to change this. I did work out how to add the colour/bold etc. effects though!

Cheers :)

The days, hours, secs, etc can be found in the clientscript/sktimer.js file:

DisplayFormat = "%%D%% Days, %%H%% Hours, %%M%% Minutes, %%S%% Seconds.";

Or in "Handle timer in postbit" plugin.

As for the rest, it is phrased. Do a search in phrases.

Can anyone confirm that it causes issues in Firefox? I've confirmed this on two different computers and it only happens to the person who has a count-down timer in their sig. I have this product installed so that only the Administrators can use it per the usergroup permissions in the Options. I have it displayed in my signature. While using Firefox, if I reply to a post using Quick Reply the reloading of the page is broken... That is, it will post the reply and instead of refreshing the page to show my post it sits at a blank screen saying "Loading..." and never loads. This happens on two separate machines using Firefox. Seems to work OK in Chrome and Internet Explorer.

The counter causses issues in Firefox. In my vBulletin forums (if counter is active) I can't use "quick reply" anymore. For the moment I disabled quick reply because my users love the counter, but I hope for a solution soon :)

Apart of this: I still did not figure out how to translate the display from 700 days 12 hours to 700 Tage 12 Stunden (German).

if (typeof(DisplayFormat)=="undefined")
DisplayFormat = "%%D%% Tage, %%H%% Stunden, %%M%% Minuten, %%S%% Sekunden.";

I tried in sktimer.js but it did not work. Any idea?

I also would like to edit the design (red/green, bold) but I don't know how. Perhaps anybody can let me know (exactly) where and how? Thanks!

I love this idea but the mod won't work with vbseo enabled. When I disabled vbseo it worked fine.

I found this over on the vbseo forum about a conflict with a previous countdown mod that serves a different purpose but I thought the problem may be the same. Apparently analytics created the problem but when I tried disabling analytics in vbseo to see if that would fix this mod it still didn't work.

Any ideas how to get this mod to work with vbseo?

Older versions of vBSEO create issues with AJAX in vBulletin 3.75 and 3.8x. I've seen one installation where the problems that created were specific to Firefox - everything worked fine in IE and Opera. If this sounds like it might be your problem, you'll need to go to vBSEO to download a patch.

Hi,
install, a wonderful feature ... but
This product allows users to set up a countdown timer or countup timer
where can I set up the countup timer?

I set the countdown time on
countdown start
0 Tage, 0 Stunden, 1 Minuten, 4 Sekunden.
But after the countdown time, i refresh the site and it started the countup time :confused:

countdown end
0 Tage, 0 Stunden, 0 Minuten, 33 Sekunden.
countdown end
0 Tage, 0 Stunden, 3 Minuten, 49 Sekunden.

is there a solution?

where can I deactivate the countup?

Live Countdown Stopped?

This mod is great but...

I just noticed that the live countdown is no longer working and it was working perfectly.

The only change I made was to edit so it had the countdown on a single line.

I tried to uninstall and reinstall and same thing the live countdown doesnt change unless the page is refreshed... and yes I checked the admincp settings.

How can I fix this?

- Open FrontPage Code view and paste in the code of sk-timer_add template
- Switch to Frontpage Design view
- Edit a color of entire table to match the background of your forum
- Edit color of text to contrast your background

ps. if you don't have FrontPage, you can use Microsoft Free Trial of Expression Web:

I am not sure I understand, but if you just want to change the color of the message text, use a BB code:

Go to Control Panel, Edit Countdown and use this as a message to display:

Countdown to Joe's Vacation:

then it'll look like this:

Running the latest vb, vbseo and multiple hacks. Everything appears OK except it does not show in sig or postbit. What is the hook for it?

Works perfectly out of the box with 3.8.5 :up:

Added styling (bold/font color) by editing the sk-timer_countdownbit template. Simply added styling around $puser[sktitle]

MAgicThemeParts - What kind of styling did you do?

Also - I'd love to be able to have it go in Months/days/hours/mins/secs.

odln018, I basically changed the font color and bolded it in the 'title' of the countdown. But, I figured that I'd share where to do it since others may want to know where to find it.

You can see here in post two of this thread for an example: http://www.fantasyleagueforums.com/showthread.php?t=24

Ok - For some reason, the timer all of sudden stopped working for specific users. It's weird, and there were no changes to anything else on the board.

I've tried to uninstall/install, with no success.

Anyone know how to show a preview of the countdown timer on the creation page? That way someone can see the actual time of their current timer? You can't use the same script as it's post specific, but I've been unable to figure out how to show it on the create page.

I've installed this but am having some difficulty (things which have been reported up-thread). I tried to remove the unnecessary line-breaks, but when I made those changes (only removing some
tags) the live countdown stops and the numbers only change on a page reload. What is the code looking for as far as the live update?

vB 3.8.6 PL1.

I uninstalled the product completely (including dropping the "sktimer" table, see next post) and reinstalled from scratch. I checked in between each step to see if the countdown was still working.

Plugin Manager -> Edit "Handle timer in postbit"
Before:
if ($puser['skformat'] == 'dh') { $puser['skformat'] = '%%D%% Days, %%H%% Hours'; } else { $puser['skformat'] = '%%D%% Days, %%H%% Hours
%%M%% Minutes, %%S%% Seconds.'; }
After:
if ($puser['skformat'] == 'dh') { $puser['skformat'] = '%%D%% Days, %%H%% Hours'; } else { $puser['skformat'] = '%%D%% Days, %%H%% Hours %%M%% Minutes, %%S%% Seconds.'; }
Change:
Remove "
"

Reload page with countdown: Countdown works.

Style Manager -> Edit "sk-timer_countdownbit"
Before:
<if condition="$puser[skunixdate] > TIMENOW">$puser[sktitle]<else />$puser[skdescription]</if>
After:
<if condition="$puser[skunixdate] > TIMENOW">$puser[sktitle]<else />$puser[skdescription]</if>
Change:
Remove "
"

Reload page with countdown: Countdown works.

Style Manager -> Edit "sk-timer_countdownbit"
Remove first line consisting of "
".

Reload page with countdown: Countdown works.

vBulletin Options -> SK - Countdown/Countup Settings -> Event Location
Switched back and forth between Signature and User Info, reloading page with countdown each time: Countdown works.

I can only guess that I must have typoed something the first time through and later, on being more careful while doing things step-by-step, didn't mess it up.

Result: Countdown works, no line breaks.

The "uninstallcode" section of the product XML is blank. That means that when uninstalling, the product's SQL changes are left behind. This is rather poor practice. Can it be updated? Seems like all you'd need is to drop the "sktimer" table.

<installcode>$vbulletin->db->query("CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS " . TABLE_PREFIX . "sktimer (
skuserid int(11) NOT NULL default '0',
sktitle text,
skdescription text,
skdateline int(11) default NULL,
skactive tinyint(4) default NULL,
skformat enum('dhms','dh') default 'dhms',
PRIMARY KEY (skuserid)
)");</installcode>
<uninstallcode />

Edit: The updated product XML in my post above includes uninstall code which drops the "sktimer" table.

Just wondering if anyone is able to update this to be compatible with VB4? Its a brilliant mod and one that our users are missing now we've upgraded.

Thanks.

I've identified a bug in this script; when a user includes an apostrophe or single quote in their "countdown finished" message, the countdown will not actively decrement. It looks like the single quote should be escaped. I'm looking at the script code now and will update when I have a fix.

Update:

In sktimer.js, I added the following as the first two lines in the CountBack function:

FinishMessage = FinishMessage.replace ( "'", "& #39;" );
FinishMessage = FinishMessage.replace ( '"', '& #34;' );
(There are extra spaces in the above code between the "&" and the "#" because vB kept helpfully rendering the entities in the post. It should be "ampersand pound 39 semicolon" for single quote and "ampersand pound 34 semicolon" for colon, with no spaces.)

This just replaces single and double quotes with their HTML entity representations. I've attached the updated sktimer.js.

*** This solves the reported problem of only some user countdowns actively counting! ***
