If you turn off Social Groups (vboptions > user profile options), then it will be removed from the user cp also.

But that's the main page you go to in order to get to all the Social Group features - see the Categories, latest groups, your groups, groups you created, etc.
But, if you want to remove it from there... USERCP_SHELL, remove this line:
<if condition="$show['socialgroupslink']">
<tr><td class="$navclass[socialgroups]" nowrap="nowrap"><a class="smallfont" href="group.php$session[sessionurl_q]">$vbphrase[social_groups]</a></td></tr>
</if>

You should end up on the same page regardless of whether you go to the page through your Use CP or the Community Link, so I don't understand why you want to remove one but not the other. But, it's your site....

So, if you click on it from the User CP, you get a page with missing images. But if you click on it from the Community Links drop-down, it is fine?

lol no its missing the images from both links, thats why i just wanted one link to it that has all the red x's instead of 2 links.... but next up maybe im gonna try to fix that social groups page so it looks like the one on vb.com

It's always suggested to fix the problem rather than just put a bandaid on it.
