why vb.org chose the chat they did?

I am looking for good chat for our site. I am sure vb.org did tremendous research into this. Can you tell why you chose the one you did on over other out there? Thanks for the help!

The chat used here is a Java applet that interfaces with an IRC server, the chat solutions you are looking at most likely do not involve an IRC server.
