I help run an Engineering forum where members frequently use a set of math/science symbols, so we thought it would be a good idea to add an area under the 'Smileys' box with these symbols readily available.

In Template: editor_smiliebox

After the first </fieldset> which is for the smileys, and before the <else />, add the following:

<fieldset class="symbols" id="{$editorid}_symbolbox" title="Symbols">
<legend>Symbols</legend>
<table cellpadding="4" cellspacing="0" border="0" align="center">

<tr align="center" valign="bottom">
<td><a href="javascript:vB_Editor['vB_Editor_001'].insert_text('Ω','','');">Ω</a></td>
<td><a href="javascript:vB_Editor['vB_Editor_001'].insert_text('σ','','');">σ</a></td>
<td><a href="javascript:vB_Editor['vB_Editor_001'].insert_text('μ','','');">μ</a></td>

</table>
</fieldset>

This is definitely not a replacement for the LaTeX Reference Forum Plugin (http://pi.bloo.us:800/academic/latex/plugin/), but it's a nice addition.

Cheers!

Nice, I don't have a math forum, but I like it.

Exactly what I needed for Science Chats (http://www.sciencechats.com/). I had been using images of each symbol as smileys, but that was cumbersome and awkward. Thank you!

I really recommend using mathjax for any math symbols. It's free and you don't have to install anything on your own server. I run a math forum and it's an amazing product.
