I think it would stimulate both members giving donations to developers, as developers releasing hacks here, if it would be visible in each modification thread (1st post & member postbit) who donated to the developer.
What do you think about this idea?

If I make a donation to a member or a staff member here I would like to remain anonymous. I would be more stimulated if the numbers at the foot were displaying 3.8.1 rather than my name appearing in the developers thread whom I donated in.

I run a site that exists solely on donations. We had talked about putting some sort of 'mark' next to the donator's names and many of the donators said they wished to remain anonymous. I know on sites that I donate to that have the option to identify me or not, I always choose not to be identified.

The donations here are just a direct link to paypal, no information about donations is stored in our databases so there is nothing we could display, even if we wanted to.

I would like to request a donation system to be added, where members can decide whether or not to donate anonymously.

i would be seriously against this suggestion. this is not a private site where you display your clients list... this is not either a portfolio or a donation fund...

We already have a system that allows members to donate to coders (if they so wish) we do not plan to add anything further.
I am like 70% against and like 20% for.10% undecided.Something between would be a field like Donations: XXX (number) ,so just showing amount instead of names, but it's not ideal either.I suggest dropping this idea.

Same here. I have it so I see a 'vip' tag on their postbit at my site but no-one else knows.

count the number of on/off we already have in the settings/options here, and you'll see we have enough...

For some time I kept the ammount donated to the mod on the first post, maybe that could happen some day. Didn't seem to offend anyone.

Except vb.org has no way of keeping track of how much a user has donated. You are sent to the paypal site to finalize any payment and it isn't communicated back to here.

Yeah not sure how that works. Also it would be one more thing for new vb mod makers to feel bad about, having 0 donations and 2 star ratings.

By adding the IPN. Paypal has a function included. the various paypal donate hacks on vb.org use it.

I think that's probably different. In that case, the site owner and account owner are one and the same. In this case, all the paypal accounts are owned by people other than the site owner. That's just a guess though since I don't know the hack.

I think this would be a good idea, if you could opt-out when making the donation.

This can be done and I can do it. I have already done it with my software and site. The mods area is still beta though on my site so you can't see it. But YES this can be done and have opted out and so on. Also store limited info from transactions to keep things private as in not storing any transaction details except username, time, amount.
Again can customize or set it up many ways but yes can be done it is only if vB wants to do it as it can be done. I am always available if they want me :)
Also can support more then just paypal. Can do authorize.net, google checkout, alertpay, moneybookers. Any as many more that you want to add

I take donations on my site for charity--I just keep track on a spread sheet.
I suppose it would be cool to give them an option to let me know but all that info is already on my paypal.
But I get the fact that this idea was so others could see it, not the person (mod) that is being donated to.
