Have you had any major problems with the installation of 3.8? I'm particularly interested in Mods being trashed or broken.

The only issue I had was that the check mark in PMs were messed up. Other than that I was fine.

The PM issue is with a mod. The fix is posted in the modification thread.

I have one problem I haven't been able to solve. One user (out of 80K) has problems with Quick Reply. I have no vbseo, so it's not that. It's very strange. I'm gonna try upgrading to 3.8.1, but I'm not sure that will fix it.

I had a problem for a while were if i closed a thread, my broweser would just cycle through the redirect page. I would have to close it and open it again.

Only happend in IE.

That is kinda the issue. If he makes a Quick Reply, it just sits there and the spinning image goes and never ends. The post gets made though. He is using IE.

Thanks. Do any of you have modified Menu Bars? Were they affected?

What do you mean? Update your template and you should be fine.

I haven't suggested that to him yet.

I dont think he wants to take that option, lol.

Maybe if Microsoft made it easier to uninstall IE then re-install it i wouldnt have had to go that route.

Hope he figures out a better way. :)

Mods that have problems with 3.8 can in time be resolved...

I just don't want to spend weeks trying to remember how to modify the menu bars, drop-downs et al then having to spend days re-doing them. Not to mention all the other tweaks I've made to the forums I run.

I keep a complete detailed list of every hack i install, version, and the link to the hacks thread.

I also keep track of what modifications ive made, or things ive changed, and in which templates/files Ive changed.

This way if i ever have to go back and fix something, I can look at my list and know exactly whats been done and where.

Commenting is also a good thing to do.

I made sure I deleted all mods for 3.8 that didnt work. Then I had ones that did and installed them. Thankfully no major problems besides one database error

I wish I was as organised as you are.

There should be a hack to keep track of all modifications installed.

What do you mean "keep track"? You can see all your modifications from the Admin CP.

I wish I was as organised as you are.

It's not hard, When you start a new board, begin keeping track of everything as soon as you start modding it.

If you have the hacks kicking around on your HD, then dig up the hack thread on vb.org and put the url on your list.

Same with code changes, if you make a change, write it down, and what you did.... if its a file edit, write down the line #'s you were working with.

I learned this lesson the hard way having spent TONS of time totally customizing a board, and not tracking changes...... when I came back 2 years later to re-use some of my customizations, I had no idea what had been done, or how it was done.

Now I always know :)

What do you mean "keep track"? You can see all your modifications from the Admin CP.

You can see all products on the products page.
You can see all plugins on the plugin page.
You can find out what templates have been edited, by browsing your templates in your various styles in the style manager.
There may be an efficient way to see modified phrases in the phrase manager, but I have not found it yet.
But AFAIK you can not get an overview of all your modifications on one page.

With 'keep track' I referred to the wish for a system that allowed to keep track of the history of all of the above.

No problems whatsoever. 3.8 has worked like a charm on all of my, and my clients' (those who have upgraded) sites.

Advanced Product Management is a nice little mod that sort of expands the existing products manager.

It will tell you how many phrases, settings, templates, and plugins each hack installed has.

The templates part only counts new templates added by the hack, not self made modifications.

You can also click on each of the different things and it will show you exactly which phrases etc are part of that hack.

Its not the do-all end-all solution, but its pretty nice.... also for hacks made using APM it can store extra information that the normal product files dont.
from what i remember APM product files will import properly in the regular product manager, any extra information is just discarded.

That's not a good practice imo.. you should always update the templates imo.

I think for most things (comments, etc.) you could use the template history for that.
For all other I suggest APM.

Regarding the first post, nothing. I always leave the wrecking to me :)

When I upgraded my forum from 3.6.x to 3.7.x I had 108 templates that required reverting. But it actually didn't take all that long.

My advice would be that if there's something that needs to be added or changed to lots of templates, use search and replace to do them all at once.

And don't revert templates. That way you don't need to remember what you did, you're just slightly adjusting what you've already done. Compare the new template with the altering to match. If you can't find anything, save the template and the message will disappear. It requires a bit of knowledge to do but it may be the case that nothing needs doing at all to that template.
