View Full Version : Chatroom Alternative to Flashchat?

Are there any reasonable alternatives to flashchat? Shoutboxes aren't good enough; but flashchat takes up WAY too much strain on the server (my website peaked out at 44 users in flashchat before the httpd service crashed). Because of this, I need to find a proper replacement for flashchat; that is a real chatroom...
I'm thinking of going with an IRC solution... I saw both EzIRC and IRC Chat mods; but which one is better of the two? What does one offer, that the other doesn't? Both of those mods lack any real screenshots and explanation of the options. Are there any other reasonable alternatives to flashchat, besides an IRC solution?
Thanks in advance.

dont you have to have a IRC chat channel setup to use those?

Yes... which is why I am asking for other solutions. I would like something that integrates into the member database of my forums. I only want to permit users who have accounts on my forums, in the chatroom... and you cant do that with IRC.

I remember one called "Addon Chat" that is integrated into vBulletin, I think its a comercial product though, but i have a client running it on a lunarpages shared hosting without any problems

Hmm... I found one called "ParaChat", and it seems to offer the best service for the price... does anyone know if it works with vb 3.8?

all the chatrooms will crash your apache. The way they work is they refresh every 5 seconds or so checking for a new MSG. Offsite hosting with irc is an option however if u run a dedicated server u probally can't run irc cause of the tos.

I really need to find an alternative also, flashchat has caused my site to crash numerous times.

Yep, this is hosted on their servers, as compared to being hosted on your own. Google it and it comes right up. Search "addonchat" in "all mods" "titles only" and you should get the integration script here.
