Question about Hacking

I am going to start hacking my vBulletin board and it says I need to edit the file showthread.php. I went to my ftp, connected to the website and I right click on the file to "edit it". The only problem is, it won't bring up Notepad so I can edit it. It brings up "Microsoft Picture it". How can I change it so it will load it in Notepad? When it trys to load Microsoft picture it, it brings up this message that says " can't load contents into Microsoft picture it ". This is obvious why it says this as this is a picture program. But why isn't it loading it into Notepad?

You need to download the file to a temporary folder, edit it and then re-upload it.

If I download the file, edit it, do I reupload it into the same directory as I did origionally? I mean like when I reupload it after i've edited it, will the second upload "over write" the first file to the changes that i've made?

Yes it will, so remember to make backup copies.

Can someone do that "who's online hack" for me, I have tried and I always screw up. I keeping getting this "Parse Error" and its a pain in the butt to open up sessions.php and look for all the lines I need to edit. I am inexperienced with this hacking thing but I am trying to learn, only to srew up.
