View Full Version : BB Code Enhancements - YouTube BB Code (W3C-compliant!)
Fangs404

I searched for a decent YouTube BB code tag here, but every single one of them uses the embed tag, which is an illegal XHTML tag. I set out to find a way to create a W3C-compliant YouTube BB code tag, and this is what you see here.
Title: YouTube
BB Code Tag Name: youtube
Replacement: <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/{param}&fs=1&hd=1" width="644" height="390"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/{param}&fs=1&hd=1" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v={param}">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v={param}</a></object>
Example: zlfKdbWwruY
Description: Embed a YouTube video. You <b>only</b> put the video ID in between the BB code tags (<b>NOT</b> the full URL!). Embedding <b>must</b> be enabled for the video!
Use Option: No
Image: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=88410&stc=1&d=1250542951
Important Note!
A link to the YouTube video is displayed if the YouTube video fails to load. There are a variety of reasons this might occur:
- You didn't properly enter the video ID between the BB code tags.
- You don't have the latest version of Flash.
- You are using Firefox and have a conflicting extension (AdBlock, NoScript, a Greasemonkey script, etc).
- The video doesn't allow embedding.
- You have some other problem on your end (corrupt browser install, spyware, virus, etc.).
- YouTube is currently having a problem.

Members simply paste what they see in the browser URL. How can I change it to accept full URL instead of just ID?

You'll need another (fancier) mod if you want to do this. Given vB3's current BBCode system, a simple BBCode can't achieve that unfortunately. Just tell your members how to properly use this BBCode.

Cant work with full url from Youtube....?
Nope, as I said earlier, it's not possible with a simple BBCode mod. At least not until the vB3 team builds in a way to use PHP or something fancier than what we have available.

Not at all. It loads directly from YouTube. There's absolutely no strain on your server because of this BBCode.

I want it: Normal, HQ, HD.

The order is determined based on the order in which you add the BBCodes to the BBCode manager. So, remove HD and then readd it and it should appear after HQ.

I don't know if you guys knew this, but if you want to make the video autoplay, you can do something like this:
zlfKdbWwruY&autoplay=1
Just add &autoplay=1 to the end of the video ID.

Okay this is confusing to me:
Mod is working fine for me and most members but a few of them have the same videos that show up fine for me, show up as "BORKED" for them. Any ideas??
They have flash installed...normal youtube works fine and the tag is set up properly since I can see the videos that they cannot.
It's really quite bizarre.
They also cleared cache/refreshed (CTRL + F5)

Well, it's definitely something on their end then. What browser are they using? If they're using FF, find out what extensions they have installed. Adblock, NoScript, and Greasemonkey are the most likely culprits for problems.

1.) i can not see the youtube picture button. it doesn't even show in the admincp under the button image heading. i placed the picture on my site and it's there. i can type in a browser's url and it shows up.
any idea ?
i don't use any forum mods.
2.) also seems most HD clips don't have a hq version. i have several hd youtube clips. you can view them in regular quality OR in hd, but not hq. but i would like to have one clip that i can use as an example for all three qualaties. so i want to embed the same clip thrice for each quality and show that as my tutorial. not sure if it's possible ?? anyone has a clip that can be viewed in regular, hq and hd ???
the way i figured it out is this:
if you upload a clip below hd quality it will have 2 versions: regular and hq
if you upload a hd clip it will have two versions: regular and hd (but not hq)

For your first question, I have no idea. Sounds like you copied/pasted something wrong. Double-check everything.
For your second question, look at the examples I gave. I use the same video 3 times. It has all 3 qualities.
For those of you that're experiencing issues with this not loading, there's nothing wrong with my script or your browsers or servers. It's just YouTube having issues. Give it time, and they'll straighten things out again.

Ah, ok. This one's not working because the video doesn't have an HD option. It doesn't even have a HQ option. You have to use the regular [youtube] tag. Be sure to check that the video has the HD or HQ option before using those tags.

Has anyone noticed in the last week or so while using this modification that HQ videos are no longer defaulting in HQ mode when embedded? The HQ button is there, but it's no longer the default when the video starts. Did something change on the parameter level?
Fangs404
03-26-2009, 02:21 AM
I'm actually not convinced that it's necessary anymore to have 3 different YouTube tags now that YouTube has enabled the HQ and HD buttons in the embedded player. I can still see having the HD tag because it's actually a different size than the regular and HQ.
What do you guys think?

I just removed the HQ YouTube tag (youtubehq). It's no longer necessary since the embedded player now has a HQ button built in. The embedded player actually also has an HD button if HD is enabled for the video, but I'm leaving the HD tag (youtubehd) because it's a physically larger player.

Per james-76's suggestion, I changed the BORKED text to something with a little more meaning that will hopefully help solve any problems with this plugin in the future. Here's the new text:
Something went wrong. Please make sure you added the video correctly. Click <a href="misc.php?do=bbcode">here</a> to see how YouTube videos should be embedded. There could also be a technical issue that's not your fault. Click <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v={param}">here</a> to view the video on YouTube's site. If this link doesn't work, you did something wrong.

Fangs404
04-03-2009, 08:36 PM
Yes, it does, but I include both options because the HD videos are physically larger than the standard/HQ videos. It's completely up to you if you want to use both. Another option is just to increase the size of the standard player to the HD size.

Hello, I wanted to know if anyone had this issue:
The youtube HD code works fine when I preview it in the replacement window in the admin control panel, however in posts, it doesn't display, I just see the "zlfKdbWwruY". The Youtube Regular & HD code works fine however. My apologies if this was already covered. Thank you.

You'll need to edit your theme or use a larger resolution. The size of the video is hardcoded. Your theme determines where to put the video.

I actually found the solution:
<div style="float:left;margin:0 10px 5px 0;"><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/{param}"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/{param}" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object></div>
However, I want to add an optional option {option} for justifying left or right.
By default, it would be nice to justify left, but allow to override to justify right with the {option} tag.
How do I accomplish this? where {option} defaults to left. but can be set to right
<div style="float:{option};margin:0 10px 5px 0;"><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/{param}"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/{param}" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object></div>
example uses:
Default:
n20K3-AEOPY
With optional justification:
n20K3-AEOPY

i too just noticed that on my site hd videos now play in standard quality. the hd button is available on the video and once pressed, it plays the video in hd. but this is not how i want it. if i use the hd code i want to force the showing of hd video. is this a temporary youtube screw up or a permanent change from youtube?
the regular quality plays as it should in regular quality, and the hq stays/plays in hq. it seems only the hd got screwed up fairly recently.

I don't understand your first question. As for your second question, I don't think that's possible (but I may be wrong).
Unfortunately, it appears that YouTube has removed the ability to embed HQ and HD videos using the &fmt=22 trick. As a result, I'm going to remove the youtubehd tag from my script.

OK, HD videos will work again. I had to change &fmt=22 to &hd=1.

I noticed that when viewing a thread with this BBcode embedded YouTube video that the "Thread Tools"/"Search this Thread"/"Rate Thread"/"Display Mode" drop-down menus get covered up by the video when those menus are clicked on. All I can see are the first two menu drop-down options. (Most of our embedded videos are contained in their own threads, so the videos are always in post #1 of each of the video-forum threads. If the videos were only within posts #2 or greater then this issue wouldn't happen, since the thread menu links are immediately above post #1.)
Is there a way to make sure that the YouTube video doesn't get placed on the top-most layer of the thread?

Hm, good question. I don't know how this would be done offhand. The JavaScript for the pop-up menu would probably have to be altered to make sure it stays on top. I don't know what changes you'd need to make offhand.

Does the same behavior happen on your forum? We do use a custom skin.

Yes, it does, but I never even noticed it because my resolution is set to 1920x1200.

I'm looking for a way to convert the YouTube posts generated by this mod on my 3.8.0 forum to the new vBulletin 4.0 media embedding system. Any suggestions?

I don't have vB4, so I'm afraid I can't help you right now.

I think you would do a search (in the database?) for [YOUTUBE] tags, replace with [VIDEO] and aff the youtube full URL.
Not something I would like to try.

Installed the code and it works like a charm. Thanks for your work!
But I got a question, it has only partly something to do with your code, but I'm sure you can point me into the right direction.
You gracefully included the YouTube buttons, but I don't know how I can make them appear on my forum, when I go to "advance reply" like it is done on this board:
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/
What option do I have to edit in order to make the button show up there?
Thanks in advance!

When you add the BB Code, just make sure "Button Image" is set to the correct path.

I think you guys were referring about this:
When you have a video and you have other Javascript items there is an issue because the window for the video will appear OVER the window of any other item you have on the page and it looks off...
I know exactly how to fix it if you use HTML... I also know for sure that we could create some kind of CSS addition that would allow for this to be done across the board as apposed to having to change the code each and every time...
<object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/afktJyLhO7Y&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/afktJyLhO7Y&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340" wmode="transparent"></embed></object>
The key is wmode="transparent and that if used as HTML will make it go behind the page or be transparent behind other we items...
If anyone is capable of doing a CSS addition that we could have this wmode="transparent automatically work with the [youtube] video embed that would be just awesome!!!
THANKS

YES I got it fixed I had the exact same issue and I was trying to figure out where to put the code to take care of it globaly... And silly me did not think of looking in the BB Code in the ADMIN CP
So for sure this works
<object width="425" height="350"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/JFwCCL0Vh6U"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/JFwCCL0Vh6U" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="350" wmode="transparent"></embed></object>
Just go to the BB Code in Admin CP and edit the page...
Place the above text in there and you are GOLDEN!
Wow this is cool this is the first time I have actually helped someone fix something rather then crying and looking for someone to repair my bad fixes LOL!!!
Hope this helps!!!

OK, HD videos will work again. I had to change &fmt=22 to &hd=1.
cool, so i can finally (again) have youtube clips that are high-def, automatically play @720. but is there a specific code that plays the clip @1080? (yes, obviously the clip would have that resolution). just for kicks, i tried &hd=0 & &hd=2 and that just plays them @360.
in fact, is there a specific number or code for all available resolutions? ie: is there one for 480?
thanks,

This is a fundamental problem in vBulletin (not unique to this BB code). Any BB code will show up in a quote. You'd need to find a mod that removes BB codes from quotes or edit whatever PHP code handles quotes to specifically filter youtube videos.
