no big difference between user names

The members of my board which write a large amount of posts, have a problem with user names that are used more often ... like james1, james2, jamesA, jamesB.
In the end, they aren't sure, what they've written to them in the past, because they can't remember and have to read all history again.

Do you have solutions for that, probably in the process of registration (while chosing the user name)?

Sorry ;)
They remember have answered a post of a "james". But they aren't sure if they answered a post of james1, james2, jamesA or whatever. It is quite difficult for them to remember when just one capital or a number is being added to an existing user name to get a new "unique" user name.
And so they have to read the postings of this member to see, if they're right and remember correctly.

So what do you want to do about it? Decide that only one person can have "james" in their username?

Is there perhaps a hack that provides, that james2 gets an error while registering his name, that there already exists a "james" ;)

In short, no.

You could disallow numbers from being in usernames though...
