View Full Version : Add-On Releases - Welcome headers - Improve community registration rates

Out of the box, your forum isn't personalized to assist or address your visitors. As a result, guests entering on a page other than the homepage (which is most often the case) have no idea what to do or why to register. Additionally, there are no visible status indicators, making it confusing for unconfirmed, unapproved or new members to know what to do or where to begin. But with a little customization, the use of the vBulletin Notices System and Welcome Headers, you can solve these issues in just a few minutes.
What is Welcome Headers?
Welcome Headers is a set of predefined messages and rules designed to help you get started in personalizing your site's notices using the vBulletin notice feature. The default templates are just that, default ? I highly encourage you to modify and add to the language and rules to meet the needs of your actual community environment.
Modifications/ Instructions:
Plugins: 1 (notices entries, rules and phrases)
This template hack should take under 5 minutes to implement and customize.
Installation/ Upgrade Instructions
1 ? Backup any existing welcome header messages (upgrading)
2 ? Remove the default welcome header from your forum home template (new installs)
3 ? Install the attached plugin file
4 ? Now Required: Customize the messages to include your site's name
For detailed instructions on each step please view the install.html file included with this addon.
Support
Please post any enhancement or technical questions you may have and I will do my best to respond in a timely manner. Please note: I can not guarantee an immediate response and am unable to assist with integrating this addon with other addons or with HTML related questions.
Why use this when the notices system exists?
Welcome Headers have been around since before vBulletin 3.0 but as of 3.7 the functionality of the system was no longer needed as vBulletin added its own native feature to handle notices. However while the notices feature lets you show welcome header style messages it doesn't give you any to start with. This addon no longer adds functionality but instead provides a set of 4 notices that have been time-tested and help your forum grow and function better for guests and members.
Please be sure to customize and add to the messages from this addon to match the individual needs of your forum!
Older Version Support
While most users are choosing to upgrade to the notices system, there are some advantages to the "old" system mainly in that it does not rely on a rules system and can be configured as designed with code changes. Additionally, the "old" version has automatic interfacing with several other addons which the notices system does not. For this reason, the old version is still supported and remains fully compatible with 3.8.
Updates from 3.7
No changes have been made; the code needed for both is the same so upgrading is not necessary.

The old version is still supported. I support this version as well but don't like reading checkboxes apparently. :D

If you read the explanation of the hack you'll see that the current (3.7+) version of the addon is actually just a set of notice conditions and text to help people get started. Some people prefer not to use notices which is why the addon mentions the old version but for anyone using the current version the notices system is exactly where everything ends up.

Thanks for this Mod. Can I safely delete this phrase - [B][I]"Hello Unregistered,
Our records indicate that you have never posted to our site before! Why not make your first post today by saying hello to our community in our Introductions forum........ as it comes on as default notice even when I enabled another notice.
Thanks for your kind help

I wouldn't suggest deleting a phrase that you may later use if you revert settings.

Fast Question.
Is this the one for vb 3.8.0 as I see the version# Just making sure
as for vb3.7.0 is version 5.0.2
...........vb 3.8.0 version 1
This thread is in the vb 3.8 forum so yes, that's where the 3.8 version is.
oh and what one of these do I download
version36_TEMPLATES-OLD.zip
version37_NOTICES.zip
version38_NOTICES is the current version.
version36_TEMPLATES-OLD is the old version as explained in the main hack thread (the old indicating old).
If you prefer to run version37_NOTICES that will work as well. There are no changes between the 3.7 and 3.8 versions.
Hope that helps.

I appreciate as much as everyone the work that developers put in to modifications (I know, I am a developer myself), but honestly ...
The original version of this feature was a great addition to any board as there simply was no way to accomplish this in native vB. I even used the original version myself back in vB3.0(???).
But this is now a standard 'OUT OF THE BOX' feature and so installing an addon that does the same thing does not seem logical. I think that if you can't utilize the vB feature to do what you need, then you probably shouldn't be installing new addons.
Just my 2cents (or is that now 1cent in light of the recession?)

It's always great to get feedback but I don't think you read through the addon description... As of 3.7 (and 3.8 now) this addon is simply a set of notice rules and phrases which get inserted into that OUT OF THE BOX feature you mentioned. So yes, the feature is out of the box. But simply because people can build messages out of the box doesn't mean they want to start with nothing... This addon gets them jump started using the same phrases welcome headers has always provided.
Make sense?

Doublecheck the notices manager and look to see if the criteria is logically setup to each message.

Sorry I am not naturally english speaking. So, if It get it right, this addon is a set of ready to run texts for the core feature?
Then it would only make sense to use it if the addon comes in german. Does it inlcude german phrases?

Yes, this addon is a set of conditions and phrases that work with the built in notices feature in vBulletin.
This is an english written addon that you would have to translate.

There's really no other way I can explain this to you... You have to open the template and remove the existing code as the instructions explain. If you don't remove it there will be two headers.

Move the welcome headers variable to the end of the navbar template and the order will be switched.

I have another problem.
I have installed on fresh board with 3 stiles (none parent) and edited 2 of them for this mod. (default one and another one)
Before the mod I did not get the vb notices. After the install I get this mode notices (below navbar as instructed) and I get also the vb regular notice !!!
I have checked several times my edits and no luck. I cannot get rid of the old notices. Of course I have deleted the above code.
I have even rebuild Styles.

The exact code to remove is listed in the install file assuming it has not been edited.
What lines those are or aren't will depend on other changes to your templates thus counting is not the best way to find it.

Because when I create new advice, and I insert text and some adsense banner, it doesn't work!

According to you, what is the problem?
Ted S

This modification is a set of default phrases for an internal vBulletin system (the notices system). If you're trying to use the notices for other content and having problems you'd need to contact vBulletin support as I can only support the notices created by this modification.

Just because 3.8 is a different forum doesn't mean it requires different code... The 3.7 version is the 3.8 version. There's no differances in the core vbulletin code that impacts the mod thus no need for different code in the mod.

I made the appropriate mods to the FORUMHOME template, which does remove the old messages, and installed the product, which does make the new notices show up in the notice manager. However, even though they're enabled, I don't ever see the messages appear. Is there some preference outside the Notice Manager that needs to be enabled?

I had the same problem, I had to go to the Notice Manager and change the display orders. I think by default they are 1, 11, 21 and 31, I changed them to 1, 2, 3 and 4 and then it worked. Not sure if it'll work for you but it's probably worth a try.

The notices hook is native to vbulletin and can be found at the end of the header template. I don't have the code in front of me but you can find it in the template or I can dig for it in a day or two.

Try creating a test notice and see if it shows up at all.
If not you are missing the notices code in your templates.
If so reorder the notices this mod created which often activates them.

What I'm saying it appears that version 4.2 was included with 3.8.3 is that possible?
There is no welcome headers version 3.8.3.
Modification versions are not correlated to vbulletin versions. Depending on the age and number of audits to a mod it could be at version 1.0 for vbulletin 3.8 or at version 99 for vBulletin 3.6.

LI_Pets

Right the welcome header is 4.2, is that your latest?
If there is another newer version will it be different?
Ted S
06-23-2009, 05:45 PM
There are several versions of welcome headers for different vBulletin versions. For 3.8 the script is 1.0 if you use the notices system and 4.2 if you use the old approach with templates.
If I update the script the version number is updated.

Since I have vb advanced I have the website as www.website.com; when I go to the forums I get errors due to the path as the forum is located at www.website/forum.com If I change it in the forum home section I can view it on the frontpage but if in forums it gives me www.website/forum.forum.com. How can I fix this?
Never mind as this has been resolved; Thanks.

You can edit the paths by modifying the notices through the notices manager.

ok I installed and removed the code specified and I still have the default showing. yours shows too though. I am using the newer version in this thread.
see ATT screenshot
Also I dug around and found another instance of this
<!-- guest welcome message -->
in the header of my template. I removed it and nothing happened. Any ideas?
thanks

It looks like you have some other code in your custom template calling in the second notice. Since your template is customized you will have to find and remove this.

That option is part of vBulletin's core software and something you would need to request / trouble shoot on vbulletin.com.

You can use template conditions with the older version of this addon but not direct php. For that you should use a custom plugin or modify this source code.

Hmmm...ok wait a minute...it is possibly me that isnt grasping things fully here...
let's differentiate between "welcome headers" and "welcome messages".
I am not using those 2 interchangeably. I see them as 2 different things.
Are you stating that this plugin covers both?
If so, that was not at all clear to me.

Congratulations *****, your D M account has been setup!
We know there's a lot to D M so here's a few ideas to get you started.
• Fill out your d profile and your general profile to help other members get to know a little more about you. You can explain your whole history or just provide the basics -- either way, it helps other members understand who their talking to.
• Once your profile is complete, why not make your official entrance to the community by posting in our new members introductions forum. It's a simple way to get to meet a few members and get all of your questions answered. If you'd prefer to dive right in and ask a question or post your comments, you're welcome to do that as well.
• If you're feeling overwhelmed, try our getting started tutorial for a step-by-step guide to getting the most out of your D M account.
There's a lot more to D M than just forum discussions, you might also be interested in visiting our photo galleries, browsing through our events calendar, searching for local ds or browsing some of our other content or articles.

I have a 3.6 vbulletin forum that still has the Welcome Headers version from that time period still installed.
I am now upgrading that forum to 3.8.4.
Does the above quote mean that the version of Welcome Headers that I'm using with vb 3.6 will work when I upgrade to 3.8.4?
If so, what advantages would I find by using this version of Welcome Headers?
Thanks.

You can continue to run the same version of the mod if you like how it preforms.
The advantage of the new version is to use the notices system which is a default part of vbulletin rather than conditionals. The downside is that you must follow the structure of the notices system.

does anyone know what to add to vba to make the links work correctly on the vba page?
For example...
If your on my main vba page...www.mysite .com and you click a welcome header link, it does not add the /forum in the address so u get an error.
But, if your on www.mysite (http://www.mysite) .com/forum and you click a welcome header link it works fine.
With vba you always have to add "exampleword.php" to the global options area for links to work right...

No I followed your directions on how to install your plugin. What I noticed is that the notices only end up showing up at the bottom (footer) only when the Unregistered notice is on as it seems to conflict with the never posted notice, weird. I spend hours trying to figure it out and just diabled the entire plugin till I can correct the issue.

This mod is not the notices system, notices are a part of vBulletin 3.8. The mod is simply a list of pre-made messages. So if you are having issues with notices that's a result of improper customizations to your vbulletin stock templates.

Hey Ted, thanks for the response. I've been working on this and testing it but no luck... it should be quite simple but its just not working.
I tried creating new notices with the same conditions but still no luck... I took a screenshot of how my "Post More Often" notice is set up in case anyone sees something out of whack. I believe this is still in its original configuration as installed.
The first 3 settings are: Active? Yes. Persistent? Yes. Dismissable? No.
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/external/2011/08/24.png
UPDATE: For the "Never Posted" Notice - If I change the one requirement from "User has no posts" to "User's postcount is between 0 and 0 posts" it works... leaving the other 2 requirements the same. I don't understand...
Still have not figured out how to get the "Post More Often" one to work, and would like to find out why the "Never Posted" one doesn't work in its original configuration.
