View Full Version : Administrative and Maintenance Tools - Proxy IP to Real IP Conversion
Paul M
01-08-2009, 10:00 PM
This modification is no longer available.
The latest vBulletin 3 version (3.8.11) has the same built in system as vB 4.2, that system should be used instead.
This hack makes the forum always use the members real ip when a proxy is detected, meaning that all existing ip functions should continue to work, basically ignoring the proxy server (other than recording it's presence).
For example ;
* The real ip (or host) is displayed in the who's online page.
* The real and proxy server ip's are accesible for each post, the button is red for members using a proxy server.
* The real ip is searchable in the admin/mod cp (but not the proxy ip).
* The real ip can be banned by admins.
Note: Obviously this hack relies on the proxy server passing the correct http variables to allow detection.
If a proxy is detected, then a red ip icon is displayed instead of the standard one. This mod will also detect if the ipinfo hack is installed and adjust itself to call the ipinfo code.
History:
v3.8.001 : Initial release for vbulletin 3.8.
Remember that this modification involves changes to the class_core.php file - if you upgrade your vbulletin, you must reapply those changes.

How reliable is it? How many proxies actually pass the correct http variables to allow the detection?

How reliable is it? How many proxies actually pass the correct http variables to allow the detection?
Simple answer - unknown except you have a real time list of all available proxies filtered by ones passing these variables and the ones that don't.
If you're really concerned - with Javascript, Flash, Java or ActiveX controls you can get the Browser sends it's real IP by executing some code at the clients comp.
Still - someone who wants to spam your board, hiding behind a proxy, maybe has these things disabled anyways.

I'm not sure if I understand it, this hack will convert proxy IP to "non-proxy" IP that the certain user has previously used?
What if someone has registered with a proxy and has always used a proxy?
Paul M
02-02-2009, 07:10 PM
No, this only works on posts made after it was installed, and only if the proxy passes on the details.

The tool is nice - but in practice it is unfortunately rarely the case. The browser can be arbitrary IPs and agents concerned. Veracity = 0
If the user then over Tor or proxy's - why should these values at once credible?
Authentic is the public ip in the weblog - which can be used with the IP in the browser to compare - it only has the Board software can not access.

Does vbulletin do anything like this? because I noticed it said " * Fetches an alternate IP address of the current visitor, attempting to detect proxies etc." If not, then why does vbulletin not do something like this if it is so beneficial?
Paul M
02-19-2009, 10:23 AM
VB does have a bit of code to detect the original IP - but it does absolutely nothing with it.

How is this different than the IP function already in place by vbulletin?
example in the first step, where you say to add the code, there is another code which starts with:
Fetches an alternate IP address of the current visitor, attempting to detect proxies etc.
is this the same?

Paul before I try this I was wondering if there is anyway to prevent mods from having access to this feature in their modCP. My mods cannot view IP's, only admins.... so I don't even want them to know this is installed.

Nope. The point of this is (was) to extract the real ip if a proxy is detected, having a list of proxy servers isnt going to help with that.
JFYI, I think I have mentioned this before, but this was specifically developed for my forum when the uk ISP Virgin Media (NTL as was) used to use transparent proxy servers. They no longer do this, so this is a bit redundant to me, but I have so far kept it updated. Whether I do that for vb4 I havent decided yet.

Ok, lets say that the user has already been banned and his IP has been banned also. After I install this, the user decides to try to gain access to my board again through a proxy. What I am reading is that the proxy will be detected and the users real IP will surface. If thats the case, then he will not be able to see the board as his original (real) ip was shown and its banned already. Is that how this mod works?

Hello Paul, I was using this in the past, great product, worked great:up:. However after upgrading to 3.8.3, I went in to class_core and couldn't find the line in step 2 to add below now in class_core. And in further investigation they seemed to make several changes to the "detect proxies" section in class_core. Have they implemented these changes of yours and is this product is no longer needed if using 3.8.3? Thanks.

I have had the server adjusted, and still i get the DB Error, more info though is that if I am a regular user pulling up online.php it comes up fine because it is not showing the ip addresses. So it has something to do with a db field not being added correctly or not being able to be found when an admin or mod attempts to pull up online.php. I am not to sure of what db field was added and where it was added, I did check my db on the server and do not see any proxy_ip field added to the db in any of the tables. I think that something is wrong here. Can you assist me in understanding what field needs to be added to what table. Thank You!

Hi.
My forum is version 3.7.3. I use version 3.7.003 of your modification. Is there a significant difference between that version and 3.8.001? In other words, is it worth the update if you already have the former? Also, version 3.8.001 says it has a dependency of 3.8 minimum. I was wondering if this really means that the modification won't work or is likely to have problems with the version of vBulletin I am using, or if it just means no support for anything lower than vBulletin 3.8?
Regards,
Kevin

You are correct, however, its not a case of the proxy will be detected - but only if it is detected, and it passes on the original ip. Annonymouse proxy servers (quite obviously) do not do this.

I was looking at the online list of my forum and noticed that a registered member using a proxy has the IP 192.168.1.1. Is this a bug, since this is a private IP?
I'm getting this with a few different members on one of my forums. What causes it to log a LAN IP as the real IP?
Also you mentioned somewhere that the mod does log the proxy IP to a hidden field, but then doesn't do anything with it. Where is this hidden field? If a member is logged on my forums with a LAN IP then I will need to check the proxy IP that was logged to do further checks.

If you have done the edits correctly, and installed the product, it should work fine.
Bear in mind however that it wont fix old posts that say proxip, it will only work on new posts.
Does this reveal both proxy address and real address on registration - or just when the user posts? :)

If it timesout I think you should be able to just install it again. If the column exists it will just bypass adding it.
Dont use the uninstall option as that will attempt to remove the column, leaving you back at square one.
It wont corrupt anything, mysql will do what it was told to do, its just that php wont hang around forever waiting for it.

Thanks, it did go through in the end - so my suggestion to anyone with a similar number of posts is to be patient and keep waiting :)

When I try to install the product, it keeps loading forever and my site freezes?
Thanks.

I had to uninstall it because it didn't work at all and some members started to get different members IP addresses. We also have the mod that detects login of two accounts on the same IP, maybe there was some conflict there.

Paul, this mod is EXACTLY what I needed! My site is behind a proxy now, and I needed to see IPs of visitors instead of the IP of my proxy. It works! It actually started to work the moment I uploaded the modified class_core.php file. Do I need to import the product, too? I don't need the red px.gif in my use case. Will I miss some other functionality if I don't import the product?
Again, thanks so very much for sharing your product with the community!

The rest is basically to store both ip's for posts - but in your case thats not really necessary as the original ip will always be your proxy.

Thank You!
But now some webmasters use flash technology for identify real ip adress
Sample http://super-socks.com and http://www.ip-score.com/ (run test)
Flash have very high percent identify real ip. Do you know such plugin ?

I am simply amazed by this one, I had so many users using proxy and this detected them all! Thank you Paul, I was always wondering who made this untill I registered vBulletin.org! Thanks for an amazing plugin!
by the way I have a question I head that putting this line on top of my Config file, it will also show the real ip of the users, is it true and what is it used for:
$_SERVER["REMOTE_ADDR"] = ( isset($_SERVER["HTTP_X_REAL_IP"]) ? $_SERVER["HTTP_X_REAL_IP"] : $_SERVER["REMOTE_ADDR"] );
Thank you very much

Its slightly true - HTTP_X_REAL_IP is sometimes used, but isnt as common as some of the others.

Thanks! It blocks various proxies, plus the ones it can't totally block (yet?) it does so far block from REGISTERING. Good work! :)

This seems not to be working on vb3 i see no red thingy when users log in with proxy. Tested it using a proxy on a test account.

This works just fine on vB3, it was written for my vB3 site, and is still running 9 years later.

Any ideas what could be wrong then?
No red puter showing on users login in with proxy .

I installed this add-on following Cloudflare support's recommendations to restore original ip addresses in vbulletin. It worked perfectly.
I only need it for this function.
Will the mod continue to work if I disable IP logging in the vBulletin options -> Message Posting and Editing Options?
