I've done a search but didn't find anything. Is there a hack that requires a certain number of words/characters before vB registers the post as a, well, a post? Say someone posts a "Thanks!" response I'd like to prevent that from counting as a post. Anything out there like this?

That's not correct, by my interpretation of the question. The way I read it, the OP wants a short message to still be added to the thread but not count towards the user's post count.

What you propose would keep the message from being added to the thread at all.
