Too bad these good spam detectors are falling apart with age. I wish
someone could step in and pick up the slack. We always need the
best of spam security with VB at all times. Even if it works on newer
versions, mods should always be updated for secuirty reasons.

It seemed to install ok on v4.0.6, I have yet to test it on anyone yet :)

I tried it on myself since I would have the same IP using another username,
it seemed just to ignore the signup.

I have installed this mod in my forum (VB 3.8), and works fine, but, and configured for, report multiple accounts in one subforum, and when I search in this subform (I use a nick that I view was reporter in this subforum) the search not works, not appears any search. Also, I use text of posts of this subforum for search and appears any search.
I configured this subforum for search only to a Administrators.

Those errors occur when you do not have the FILES uploaded correctly. Re-read the ReaMe file and follow the instructions. Like I have explained before, the files contained in the /madp/ directory should be uploaded to *forum root*/madp/ so that vBulletin can call the files correctly.

I have not counted on searching for the posts. An old friend has lent me a directory to test and work on this modification, so hopefully I'll be able to do some debugging soon. However, the computer containing my work for version 2.0 is on another machine in my household, which does not have a power supply at the moment. So while my buddy takes care of a few things on his server, I'll be trying to find a new power supply.

Just be patient, and I'll see what I can do. Until then, I recommend keeping the reports in a separate forum. Thanks :)

I am running this on a big board and its certainly a live saver. We have 1250 report threads so far. (5-10 a day) So a big thanks to the coder!

We frequently do encounter a bug/error though, as it does not correctly identify if any of the multiple accounts are banned accounts.
Most reports state:

Primary Banned Usergroup: 8 (Found)

While none of the accounts are banned (8)

It would really help, if this issue would be solved, because it would allow us to use the built in functions to automatize part of the process. Making the system ban automatic while this issue is unresolved, would result in banning hundreds of innocent members.


I'd like to request three enhancements:
post new reports relating to the same user, to the existing thread.
if a report relates to a user that is in the banned group, put 'BANNED USER RETURNING:' in the thread title. This makes it easy for staff to identify the urgent cases.
when the alert is based upon IP, but not cookie, then its uncertain if it relates to the same user. This can be solved by checking if the IP is dynamic or static and comparing similarities in usernames, Date of birth, email domain, profile fields, Join Date & Last Post & Last Activity. Normally staff will do this by hand, which is quite a lot of work when you are getting reports in daily. All this can be done automatically, which would be a huge relieve on workload.
Also would like to remind to these suggestions, as they are buried in this thread:
Some suggestions:

- After each account:
Add a link to PM the member. (optimal would be a predefined PM text to be sent)
Add a link to search the database for all IP's that belong to the account.
Add a link to add the account to the miserable users group
Add a link to add the account to 'Tachy goes to Coventry'
Add a link to ban the member.- Add a function to ignore the accounts or IPs in the future.
- If an IP is reported, then add the whois.

We do not experience inocent banning due to any bug (as long as I know).

Among commented requests, I see interest in IP query/search when involved, and indeed variables available pointing userIds, so we can customize links to automate actions in thread content.

I'm decided to focus moderation info towards user notes, so my proposal would be to add clon accounts information in this field, a similar way in wich this hack does on user name changes:

I think that there needs to be more options what to do with MA depending on user behind them.

For example, right now I can't allow MA for user without ban and disallowing registration and banning all MA for user with ban. Or how can it be done? On some bulletin boards it would be useful to allow MA for decent users, while punishing those misbehaving ones.

I suggest:

Split options for MA registration and login detection.

Also, each of this group of options should have parts for users with ban and those without.

In registration part, for each type of users (banned and without ban) should be these options:

1. Do nothing
2. Move to usergroup
3. Ban (it would be really nice if we could set ban duration in options, whether to match original ban or arbitrary period of time including permanently banning MA)
4. Disallow registration completely

In MA login detection part, also for each type of users (banned and without ban):

1. Do nothing
2. Move to usergroup
3. Ban all other MA

In each of this four settings group should be separate options for reporting actions and detections, to report or not. The type of reporting is determined in special settings group, as it is done now. You may want reports on some actions and detections performed and not on others.

Now we have silent mode. If silent mode is off, is there any reports of actions? I don't use any actions because there is none that suits my needs. But I heard that there is no reports of actions and detections. I'm not sure, but I would like some reports.

If there is a way to improve MA detections, it's more than welcome. :)

Anyway, I think that having options done this way would make this product more suited for needs of different bulletin boards. As now I can't allow users without ban to have MA and ban those that have been banned already, I need to do all work manually and use it only for reporting (silent mode on). But, I would really like to be able to disallow registration for users already banned and automatically ban their other MA. And ability to decide how long they will be banned would be especially useful. I don't want to permanently ban them, only till they original ban expire.

So far, i know at least one member, that had 2 accounts before the installation of this mod. He logged in with both of them and posted in the same thread (after the installation of the mod).

Shouldnt i get a pm and a thread discussion in that situation? (i have enable them, both)

Ok, so nobody has integrated evercookie, a bummer to be sure.

Back to my original issue:

IP addresses are not being compared, the only way I am currently able to detect multiples is via cookie. IP detection worked perfectly for quite some time.

I believe my IP detection issues started when my webserver was converted to NGinx and the PHP-FPM/CGI. I could be wrong though.

Does anyone have similar experiences with this type of webserver? If I can confirm this issue with others, I will hire devs to figure the mess out. If that is not the issue, I guess I will remain at the mercy of banned members who figured out that all they need to do is clear cookies and re-reg.

The author of vB Optimise will not even work with me to fix it. Until they improve their coding, I'm not sure if I can do anything about these issues. As far as I know, administrators that do not use the above modifications will not have any problems.

Just popping in to confirm that we are indeed happy to give access to the necessary files, and that the author of this mod has never been told otherwise by anyone at DBTech.

Further - as normal post reporting works perfectly fine with vBOptimise the issue must lie within a change to that process cause by this modification - it's not something vBOptimise has "broken".

I know that a lot of you are a bit ticked off at me since I've been so inactive in the development of this modification and support for it, but I'm trying to get back on the horse now. I have resumed development of Multiple Account Detection & Prevention and I will be returning to this thread on a much more regular basis.

Please bear with me, though. I've got finals this week and I'll also be attending summer courses at my university.

Oh, and if I can get in touch with vBOptimize's author, believe me, I will make every effort to correct the code that is malfunctioning if it's within my territory. Chances are that it is, since vBOptimize's author is incredibly talented. At any rate, hold tight. We may see some changes coming within this month.

It's rather trivial to defeat depending on the settings you're using for detection.

For example perhaps you only detect via IP - Use a proxy
Perhaps you detect by cookie - clear your cookies

Maybe you have both settings enabled - use a proxy and clear your cookies.

Some of your users may be wise to the detection methods.

How does giving access to files alone mean that you are willing to fix the problem? I do not understand this 'If you want to fix it for us, then we will provide you access' attitude.
I'm sorry if I am misunderstanding you but as I see it there is an issue with either your product or this addon and it needs the effort of both you and Kiros to resolve it. So just giving access to the files effectively means that you are not willing to participate in resolving it.
Please correct me if I am understanding this wrong. I have been trying to purchase your product for over a year now and together with others we have repeatedly asked you to try resolve this.
Instead of fixing the issue, we are seeing an unprofessional quarrel for a year that does not reflect on your company in a positive manner. I've noticed posts about this on various websites.

Hmmm... we're running vBOptimize Pro along with Kiros72's mod here on vBulletin 4.1.3 and it works fine, so perhaps there's something else wrong? :confused:

I appreciate your work on this mod, but it seems like many people have problems with the forum reporting option. I don't have VB Optimize, and I can't get it to work. I do get PM's, but it is more comfortable to get the detections in a private forum (which I set its ID in the mod options, but it doesn't work.)

This is working on our 4.x forum - however, I cannot change the name of the cookie away from IDstack. Anything other than that breaks it.

For sure. I have tested about a hundred mods on different boards, and this one is just so good. I see people asking for evercookies, but i don?t think those are ethically sound. Who are we to put un-removable stuff on peoples machines?

More features are always welcome, but to me it?s good enough. I have tried to dodge it, and it is ofcourse possible, but it get?s most of them. Why hasn?t this one been up for MOTM? To me it?s a winner.

If you target people who are known trouble makers (and banned users usually are, at least on my forum) and keep making troubles for all users, why not weed them out with everycookies?

If evercookies are only placed on the computers of banned members, then thats a good function to have.

It needs to be considered that technology is moving forward, more and more people have automatic cookie removal and use dynamic IPs. i.e. it becomes harder to keep banned members out. Even with this awesome addon.
So it would certainly be useful to add more detection methods.

I think that this standard version can be used by whoever wants and another version (with evercookies) can be released parallely for whoever (like me) wants it.

Everyone does what he/she feels right for his/her forum. No one is able to speak for the other since they should be in the other's shoes to do so. So, that said...

When is the evercookie version going to be released? Are you planning so? Do you need some help? Is anybody willing to help?

I never meant that evercookies will help protect my users' data, but to protect discussions from people who are rude, who insult everyone, who only post inflammatory posts and all in all are making trouble for everyone else.

These users are banned (at least on my forum) and some of them keep getting back over and over again. Of course, they style is obvious and they get banned again quickly, but why not have ability to block their registration automatically?

On a new user's registration it shows the error message as if a user tried to post a link (which I think is caused by the system trying to create a thread for a duplicate user per this modification).

This is one of my all time favorit mods. Yes, it can be tricked, but eventually it catches the bad ones. Works just fine with 4.2. Only thing i wish for is that dev on thisone could resume.

Also, as mentioned before, if the "ever-cookie" code could be implemented, that would be it.

I was assuming that that "double cookie" may not look good under some browser's eyes.

For me the plugin sends a PM but it stopped posting to a forum.

Great mod, but i checked and there one weakness: On the same computer, create a user account on Chrome browser, continued to make another account on firefox browser or any browser, this mod cannot detect multiple accounts.
Hope Author fix it because i like this mod

Author couldn't fix this, because this mod uses cookies for detection and this is how cookies work.

But, there could be solution, if evercookies are implemented, which, as it could be obvious, aren't regular cookies.

AFAIK, it works in vB 4.2.3 (all version of vB4).

Thing is, it's basic code, not tightly connected with vB version (templates and such). On the other hand, probably someone with vB 4.2.3 who use it (or tried to use it) can confirm or deny it.
