Is it possible? Yes, certainly. Is there a readily available modification? I haven't seen one. It simply requires editing to functions_login.php.

Marco did a tutorial or a post on this before. I remember using this on my forums after following Marco's instructions

Login by username or email (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=96832) written for 3.5, but it should not be too hard to make it work on later versions.
