View Full Version : Visitor message (/comments on blog entries) notifications

I did a search on this without any avail on here as well as vbulletin.com. Basically the background is I had held off on the update to 3.7.4 for a while and was supporting 3.6.4 and recently made the changes to find out all the different social group features.

I'm also using mainly out of laziness a skin from vbstyles and the updater did a good job of upgrading that so I haven't bothered to get the version of the skin that vbstyles advertises as a skin for 3.7.4, so I'm not sure if that'd be the solution to this but maybe you guys can help.

Basically I was expecting to see a notification section or such for things that pertain to the user profiles. Mainly this would be if any messages were written as visitor messages on the users' profile pages, as well as things like comments on the albums, or blog entries.

Any solutions that I'm missing out on?

I also forgot to mention but I had a look at the change log for 3.8.x and didn't see anything that would address this. I so far haven't had the time to figure out what the social group discussions feature translates to so I can't really be sure as to what the modifications to that field mean but from a guess, I'd say that's not what I'm looking for.

A clarification if that's not the case would be good too. Thanks :)

When you get a comment on your Profile, as well as a private message or comment on a picture or friends request, "Private Messages" should change to "Your Notifications: 1" with a drop down menu of the options on where the notification is. It is standard on 3.7 Im assuming thats what you are asking?

By the sounds of it, that'd be something I'd be looking for but I don't get any form of changes in any way, at least from what I see.

The attached pic is the notification area which is part of the BlueSaint skin which I mentioned and it remains unchanged independent of any visitor messages or any other events that would be good to know about (i.e. also the friends requests you mentioned). Additionally I didn't see anything in the User CP end so I'm wondering if it may be the skin that needs an update?

For that theory I checked to see if I could switch to the default vb skin but unfortunately it was deleted so the forum simply has one skin and I couldn't find an xml file to upload to test with. Any ideas?

To create a new default style - Styles & Templates > Style Manager > Add New Style > no parent Then select it to browse the site with.

It sounds to me like when you upgraded your site, you didn't upgrade or revert your templates.

#1 Rule: Listen to Lynne.

It probably is your skin. If you have the default and it still doesnt show up, you might want to check out some User Group settings to make sure User Profile Messaging, User Albums, all that stuff is enabled.

Ah, ya, the theory was right. Thanks for the skin adder bit... I didn't know it'd do that but good to learn something new. The skin that the upgrade script continued to use looks fine except for such new ajax based changes implemented. It also makes sense because I was curious when I didn't see a link to the vbblog setup on the top menu either when I newly installed the feature.

I checked the usercp with a test and notifications categorized accordingly were showing up in the control panel home but the notification menu isn't there.

Any quick fix possible for me to modify the existing template with either manual editing or an automated script or I just have to pay for the upgrade to the skin?

Go to the template you want to edit, hit View History, then Compare and you will see the differences between your template and the default vbulletin template highlighted. Then you can copy/paste the needed stuff into your template and Save.

A quick looks shows that it'd be some work to match the theme of the edited template so I'll just upgrade the skin instead of making the manual edits.

Thanks for the help... at least figured out how to solve it :) (assuming that their 3.7.4 compatible version at least covers the change)
