Gif / Pic in Sig (file size question)

I have the max on my forum set at:

Signature Image Maximum Filesize (bytes) = 40,000

And it seems like a lot of pictures are still to big to fit in that parameter.

Am I setting it to low? Or are they just using big pictures? I'm not sure what a good size to allow it to be at, because I don't know how much it will effect how fast my forum runs.

Anyone know how big I can go with the size, before it effects my forum? A lil over 100 members on it.

for sig make 450 by 180 max

and if ppl add just delete their pic and in their profile disable the signature for that user

make that a rule in the fuels of ur forums.

Well I was curious as to what a good size for the Sig would be? It seems like 40k is to small, and yet I'm scared to raise it, cause it might add to much onto the server - since it's a shared server.
