Without access to the server, there is not much we can do to narrow down the issue with your server, logs need to be checked first, RAM use needs to be checked, the list goes on.

If this isnt a dedicated/vps server and its vhosted, then the host should be able to tell you whats causing the high load.

What type of hosting is this, dedicated or virtual?

Yes, you will be good after the change to a vps.

There are things to consider as well, how much RAM your site needs to function on a normal basis with hacks installed.

Its hard to give a solution to your question, you never provided any info about your site, modifications, traffic, etc...

Your VPS solution above should provide you with plenty of resources for your site.

Your host should be able to easily tell you what query or page that is causing your site to require them to shut it down, if they aren't, i'd look into a better host that will help you more.

He isnt asking about a new host either, i pointed out the suggestion if his host isnt willing to help him with his issue.

We can't simply give you an answer to what might be your issue, you do not provide anything that will help us determine your issue or what the host claims is your issue, it is most likely one of the modifications you have installed on your site, but then again, you didnt tell us if you have any installed.

@Dr.Love, your situation is not new, but from what i see, you may just be facing some host that is pushing you to pay more for an account, and it's not a new situation, a lot of vBulletin owners have seen their account blocked for no reason because the host requested them to switch to a VPS... the best thing is to verify with a new host if they have problems with general vBulletin forums.

as Marco indicated too, there is a forum for that kind of situation you can discuss... maybe make a search for your host name there, you may have some echoes from other vBulletin owners...

Doc, the upgrade will most likely cause a bit more resource use in your site, have you disabled all your modifications or are there still active ones?

A list of hacks would help as well.

The stats hack can be a large resource hog if your doing the top 10 or even the top 5 on a vhosted site, disable it and see what the host says.

As i've said, if your host is unwilling to help you and tell you what is causing the high resource issue, then i would get a new host, they are probably trying to push you to get a more expensive hosting package. That's not a very good host in my opinion.
