My forums has been getting a few spam bots lately so I wanted to take some action to prevent them.
I setup an extra question in the profile fields that appears only in registration.
Simply: "Do you want to be banned" - Fields Yes/No (Default Yes)
Question
I'm pretty certain this is possible right? How can I enable it so picking that profile field, or simply NOT changing it, leads to an automatic ban?
thx

You forgot to mention which version vb you're running. With 3.7, these questions are built in. If you've got older versions, there are mods here that do it painlessly for you.

Yea using 3.7 sorry.
I did a few searches for Mods, only decent one I found was Spam Decimator (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=183244&highlight=spam). It could be useful but I was hoping for something to prevent them registering.
A simple auto ban someone if he picks an option in registration would be fantastic.

Since the latest craze of spammers registering, I installed this timezone hack(which is about as painless as it gets), denied all timezones that I wanted and wham! only 4 spammers registered in the last 2-3 weeks. It's awesome!!!
My website is US/Canada based only, so I banned every single other timezone and it's helped immensely!

There's not much point in banning them, as next time they'll just use different information. Banning is really something that's more useful for actual members.
The time zone ban may work, as well as IP banning - especially if you don't have a global forum. I know I have IP bans over most of the globe at this point (done in cpanel).

IP banning may work for some, but all it was a head ache for me to do and to keep up on. I eventually got into a scenario where I was banning partial IP's for actual potential registrants. IMO, banning IP's would be a last resort for me.
Between the current integrated options from vB, a hack or two(including the timezone hack).....that should cover the vast majority of spammers.

Hmmm well my board is US based, but I'm from UK :p
But basically yea it has ppl from every timezone, so unfortunately wouldn't be appropriate.
Thats why I think the best way would just be a simple question.
Ban me? - Yes/No
Oh, interesting to see, not just my board that's being bombarded with spam bots.

Oh man....in a 3 day span, I had 50+ spammers register. Some interesting pics they posted though. LOL I was about to go freakin nuts! Then the timezone hack came along and all is well in forum land. ha, ha

Hi,
we use Enhanced Image Captcha see https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=181818
It is great against the bots.
for a demo see here http://www.steadiforum.com/register.php ( not our site )
