Building a new forum, I'm trying to decide what mods I should add.

Only try to add things you NEED. Don't add every single modification in the world for the heck of it...

exactly which is why I want to see what are the few that I should add for sure.

Only you know what you need - not every forum has a need for an arcade, for example.
At least mention the topic of your forum, maybe?

Ya really. If it's a church site then you're unlikely to want any of the ones just mentioned.
If I had to pick one off the top of my head? Continue Search. No, maybe Instant new thread notifications.

Hard to say. I think vMoods and the Arcade are probably the most used/appreciated though.

sure. I'm thinking about a forum that tailor to young professionals which will include music, fashion, girls.

I've got a music forum. My users love the tracker (it's a tracker site, so that's a given for us). They also love the youtube bbcode. They love the filter by icon mod I have in the torrent forums (so they can filter by Audience, Soundboard, Pre-FM, etc.) and sort by date in those forums. My Mods love a few of the modifications I wrote myself to mark threads that have been looked over, or to move/delete-torrent-file all in one-click.

Thread Thumbnails. It's a priceless addition if you run an Art forum, for sure.
