View Full Version : The avatar hack from UBB

04-27-2000, 04:51 PM
Hi folks,

I run a UBB based site which gets about 500K pageviews a month (growing 20+% a month).

One of the very popular features with the registered members is the Avatar hack for UBB which allows them to select their own "personal image".

Any ideas if such a hack exists or if there is an existing similar to it on vB.

Cheers,
Shri

Haven't seen you around in a while.

Like what you're seeing here? No avatar hack exists (as of yet), but I'm sure it won't take long to come up with some.

Hi Martin,

Yep, I really like what I see (having said that I've not seen any code yet!).

I know PHP far better than perl and this seems to fit the bill.

Is there any documentation? Even SQL table documentation would be a great start given that I cant lay my hands on the freeware version yet.

:)

I could not edit my post even though I am logged in.

I also wanted to add that I stopped work on my WML and HDML hacks for UBB when I heard that there would be a php/mysql thingy in the offing. Would be a lot easier to do it in PHP than cryptoPerl :D

An added benefit might also be integration with a kick butt opensource / mySQL search engine like udmSearch ( http://mysearch.udm.net )

P.S. I do think I've entered the right email addy in my profile, but did not receive e-mail notification of the various replies.

P.P.S. Never mind.. I was clicking on the wrong set of icons to edit the post. :)

The only documentation I've seen thus far is the manual on the site.
http://www.vbulletin.com/manual/

I remember you saying you were better at php than perl when we were bouncing around stuff in the active topics add on :)
I was glad to see you over here and hope you jump on soon so we can get some good hacks:)

I know squat about PHP, but I understand it's a lot easier than perl.

If I were to design an avatar hack, I would want upload capabilities with size/weight limits in addition to a library of avatars, that way people could make their own or use those already there. Gonna take me a while to get that good, though...

I would love to see the avatar hack ported for PHP/MySQL.

That's one of the features my users have been requesting most.

Do I call you Mr Cold or Mr Steel? :)

I'm planning on working on it, should have it done by next week. Unfortunately most of the original code would need permission from the originator, who I will e-mail and ask before I actually begin posting/using the code.
