Ever wanted to enable the ability to specify a certain forum as an "answer" forum, where members can post questions and select the best answer given by the community? This is similar to yahoo answers, a very effective website where users can post questions and seek answers from registered users. Answering questions can get to be a mess, keep it organized and save yourself a bit of hassle when dealing with Q&A's. As a webmaster, you already have enough on your hands to have to worry about answering questions sometimes, and need an effective way to do this! Or maybe, you just want to let your community do it for you ;)

I was thinking about it, but figured the only reason a member would have for doing that would be if my any chance he was able to get an answer from another source, at which point a link would probably be provided. However, i will consider the option of restricting this.

It would be interesting to give users the option to designate a thread as a question in any forum rather than setting any one particular forum as a Q&A forum. That way we could have regular threads in all of the forums, and those that are question-based could benefit from Q&A layout that this hack gives us.

Yeah.. thats its really nice..

You can do this by drawing a conditional based off of TIMENOW (get the number that gives you via php "echo TIMENOW;") and then create a conditional based off of it.

Take this conditional and use it to wrap the necessary plugins. If you have knowledge of php, that would be the quickest fix atm. Will try and see if i can provide an add-on or something for you guys soon if anything.

Please add this functionality: A 'Is this a question that you want an answer to Yes/No' Radio button on newthread.
If the thread creator selects Yes, then the thread will have Answer functionality.
If the thread creator selects No, then the thread will have no Answer functionality.

This way, the answer functionality does not have to be confined to dedicated forums.

For those of you running through un-installation errors. Edit your product and replace the uninstall code with the following.

Set a forum as answer forum -> Users threads are displayed as "Unanswered/Answered" depending on whether or not they've marked a post as the best answer.

Yes. I will be creating an option to reset the best answers. Since this is a universal add-on, i will make sure to include it in the light version as well for you guys ;)

It would also be great if we could post the unanswered and/or no best answer chosen on VBAdvanced or integrate it into a search.

Also IT would be nice to have a cron job set up to remind the posted if they have not chosen a best answer. Something like " Poster did you know there have been X answers to your post XXX on yoursite.com. Why not stop by and check them out to see if any of them answered your question"

- Good Question: How can the Best Answers be Removed? I don't see an Option to do that, and is Very Important to Provide one so that if by Mistake Chosing a Post the User can Take that Back and leave the Thread as Unanswered. :confused:

- Would be also nice if the "Choose as Best Answer" would only be Displayed to Thread Starter and Admins/Mod/Super Mods.

- If you can add an Option to Choose Which Usergroups, besides thread starter (of course), can Select Best Answer, would be really nice; or perhaps if you choose only Admins, Mods and Super Mods, to Select Best Answer, would be nice that in case of Mod only if the Mod has Permissions to Moderate that Forum, then he can Select Best Answer, otherwise Not; in case of Admins and Super Mods, there's no restriction for that.

That is awesome modifications you made. Please advise on how you added the coding to allow green flag and red flag. Please also advise on how you added the icon underneath the accepted answer.

I'm going to include this in the light version to allow you guys to get more of an impact of the script ;) Will be added in the next release, already made the fix. The premium solution will be made available once i see you all here are completely satisfied with the effect of existing features. After this, an update will be made to the light version and the premium will be released on the same day!

For those looking to integrate this themselves till the next release, here's the simple fix:

Edit the following plugin: Answer Forums - Is question answered?

Search for:
$thread['postuserid'] = $this->registry->userinfo['userid']

Replace it with:
$thread['postuserid'] == $this->registry->userinfo['userid']

I'm seeking feedback on the ideal solution for giving credit for members who have provided answers (via vbplaza).

My idea is to simply make it so that user's can't change the best marked answer once they've selected it. Or should i just make it so that they can, but it'd take back the points given to the last user? This would be in attempt to prevent abuse of course. Admins will also always be able to change the answer however.

Ideas/comments/suggestions on this feature?

You are only allowed to have one "best" answer at the moment. As for stats on member's answers.. That may or may not be released in the Light version.

You can probably achieve this using the SR Extra Threadfields modification. This only deals with the overall answer/question aspect of the topics : )

Functionality needed:

1) When a user has a question, they should be able to select how many points they are willing to award for the answer.

2) Thoose points should be deducted from the user asking the question and awarded to best answer user.

3) Allow the users to rate replies. Looks like there is already a mod out there Ajax rating for replies as shown in this image.

4) points system adjust the points based on rating on repliesXnumber of ratings.

Willing to pay for custom modification.

In threadbit Template:

Find

Before Add

Step 2:

In Plugins & Products -> Plugin Manager

Unselect (Deselect) Active Status for Plugin: Answer Forums - Show answered/notanswered In Forum

Click on "Save Active Status" to Save that Change.

(This Avoid Duplication of Text in case where Plugin Displays it).

That's it. Ir worked Fine on vB373.

If you'd like a free version, vbcredits would be your answer. They both have a paid version as well. However, I've found the people who use each to be pretty evenly-distributed for the most part, so i guess it all comes down to which benefits you :p The light version supports vbplaza atm, the premium supports both ;)

For example. I don't like the way the best answer post is displayed after it's been selected. Where do I play with that?

Also, I want to create a button for "Mark As Best Answer" instead of the text link. Where do I change the code?

And last, the "Answered / Unanswered" prefixes are only being displayed when viewing the forumdisplay of the selected forum. How do you change it so that these prefixes show up when people search, specifically when using the "Todays New Posts" search.

Both are great suggestions. Currently, only the admin and thread starter can choose the answer. However, i can see the need to allow others to do so as well (based on usergroups). This feature will be added ;) As for integration with vbexperience, i will look into that as well :up:

You can do this by drawing a conditional based off of TIMENOW (get the number that gives you via php "echo TIMENOW;") and then create a conditional based off of it.

Please add this functionality: A 'Is this a question that you want an answer to Yes/No' Radio button on newthread.
If the thread creator selects Yes, then the thread will have Answer functionality.
If the thread creator selects No, then the thread will have no Answer functionality.

This way, the answer functionality does not have to be confined to dedicated forums

Is this something that you will add to either the light or premium version?
Having both threads with and without answer functionality in the same forums, is a must for me. Please be so kind to add this.

Both are great suggestions. Currently, only the admin and thread starter can choose the answer. However, i can see the need to allow others to do so as well (based on usergroups). This feature will be added ;) As for integration with vbexperience, i will look into that as well :up:Allowing other usergroups (Mods) to choose answers would be very helpful.

to remove pm feature, in the premium producst, search for pm code and remove it (be carefull and make backup first), then reupload it again in admincp --> product manager

i have this mod installed on 2 forums, on one, it shows Answered/Unanswered prefix on Forumdisplay before the title of the thread, but on the 2nd forum, it does not. i have checked the admin settings and i have selected "yes" for "Show Question Status on Forumdisplay?". it shows the copywriter info on the footer but its not showing the prefix. im running the same version of vb on both sites but the one that doesn't show the prefix has more mods than the one that does. maybe a mod is interfering with it. so, how can i manually make it work?

Yeah, that's what I did by editing the "phrase" for that text and replacing it with img code. However I still have these darn parentheses around the button. lol

Also to add, $template_hook[postbit_controls] is what the "Nominate best thread of the week/month" mod uses as a hook for it's Nominate button so it would be best for the location to be consistent. THANKS!!

Great mod. I've installed the premium version to my site. However, I really need to allow all of my users to mark best answers, or at least allow more usergroups than the administrators and authors. The easiest way to find phrases are to simply put more or less what the text you're looking for is.

For for a phrase like this, you can easily access it by entering "Answered" or "Unanswered" in the field that says "Search for Text".

i bought a premium version as well.. when I turn it on using the forum options when i visit the page it pops up with a mysql error.. 1.0.2 is premium version release number that gave me this problem.. however the actual thread was viewable and worked fully selecting which answer was the best.. however i had to make the thread before I could turn on the hack in the forum.

That way we could have regular threads in all of the forums, and those that are question-based could benefit from Q&A layout that this hack gives us.

Second this... Right now I have a thread prefix setup that reads simply 'question'. It would be even cooler if a prefix could be the trigger to make it a 'question thread'.

Lasto, I think you are referring to the Premium product here. The Premium Product is 100% supported on www.provb.org for obvious reasons (we can't support premium products on vb.org of course). No ticket goes unread there, check it out for yourself ;)

I check here on the free version every-so-often to make sure things are still in order. But even then, Premium support can only be given on ProvB. This thread is only for the Light product.

You can always add a conditional to not display the post. It can be done both via templates or php. Via templates it may be slightly sensitive towards the overall posts on the page (it will probably be once less, since you're skippin' one) - unless it's done through a php and create a plugin.

I believe i got this covered via email some time ago. However, for others with the same issue, just rename the file and manually add .zip to the end.
