You need to upload the correct place on your server. You should ask in the style thread (most should already come with instructions on where to place them), about where to place the image directory.
Although, when you extract the ZIP archives most styles come in the images are already placed in the appropriate folders. So if you just drag over the contents of the folder you've just unzipped they should fall into place. Its always best to ask in the thread from which you downloaded if you run into problems.
Also might be helpful if you are new to read the manual or at least keep it handy: vBulletin Manual (http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/root)

vBulletin Options >> Style & Language >> Default Style ( )
Images are USUALLY put like this:
/forum/images/xxxx/
So if the skin was called ABC, it would go:
/forum/images/ABC/
But this does vary per skin, so a way I find useful is to import the XML file, go to your forums, mouse over the title, right click and select VIEW IMAGE
It will come up "Error 404" - copy the IMG url in the address bar, and make sure the images are uploaded to that location.
Many people have different ways, but that works for me
