I run a message board that is a fan site for Howard Stern Fans.

Now I had a user join, spamming the board and posting child pornography.

I have managed to ban his IP's, require email authentication and I have required a mod to activate new accounts.

My question is, what is my responsibility as far as reporting him to the authorities? Do I have a responsibility to do that? How do I do this?

you could report his ip here http://www.fbi.gov/innocent.htm to help stop that kind of worm.

Absolutely. Child pornography is a felony punishable to the full extent of the law.

So reporting my own site isn't going to cause problems? Plus content has been removed by one of the mods?

No you won't get into trouble as you've taken the steps to report this guy.

As long as you have his IP address, it may also be adviseable to contact his ISP and tell them what your Doing, perhaps they will be able to help the authorities with back tracking his movements on the web etc.

I would be well proud to catch someone like this and help lock him up.

Still worth a shot, I'm sure the authorities can work back through proxies if they wanted too, otherwise next time he does it, save the post to a hidden forum, a mod room or the such where you can keep it as evidence, then contact the authorities.

They can work back through all the ip's and hopefull nail this sick scum.

I'm sure i speak on behalf of everyone when the end result is one less sicko chasing our kids.
