View Full Version : sub-domain vs sub-folder?

I currently have my forum installed in a sub-folder... if our forum is expected to grow very large, is there any advantage to using a sub-domain instead?

I'm not worried about the SEO argument - simply from a mechanics perspective... I don't want to one day reach a point where my forum is very large and I'm saying "I wish I would have installed this in a sub-domain"

Any suggestions are appreciated, thanks.

Depends on how large, with subdomains you can setup seperate servers to host it all with easier than you can with sub folders.

Well basically, I have a community site www.true2ourselves.com... currently, we're not using sub-domains for our various sections. However, I am considering changing our primary sections ("videos" and "forum") to sub-domains... but that would require a lot of work and I would only do it if I absolutely should.

As long as the site can be modified later to work on mult. servers in it's current format (sub-folders) then ill stick with that... but if the sub-folder setup is going to cause me a road block in the future, then I would probably change it now.

I understand from your response that it is "more difficult" to work with sub-folders when branching to other servers... but is it still possible? Is it so difficult that I should change my entire setup now? Let's pretend the site is going to become very large.... Any help is appreciated, thanks.
