Alright all,

I could really use your help here. I am chewing up major amounts of bandwidth(or as I see it) and I'm wondering if anyone would mind helping me out. This might be a long process to bring you up to speed, so if anyone has the time to help me dig into it all....I would appreciate it big time!!

My website is this. A vB forum with photopost integrated into it. The only major addition I have to the site is a chat box on the bottom of the forums. Right now I have the photo gallery shutdown and have for about a week to determine what is pulling all the bandwidth. I've also shutdown the ability to view that chat mod to only those who are registered.

Based upon these stats, do you feel that the amount of bandwidth being used is out of control? ha, ha

I can attempt to get any other stats you all might need to see to help determine where or what might be causing this all.

Thanks and I appreciate your help!! My website experience is pretty limited and I guess at this point I'm stuck on what else to do!

It seems pretty weird that in some days you have 300MB and in other days you're pushing gigabytes. Do you have any more detailed stats, comparing a 2GB traffic day to a 300MB traffic day?

Also, you might be running some backups which are causing this.

Might you be able to tell me what stats you may be looking for? I will attempt to find anything that may help you with that.

I know this might be a website no-no, but I have yet to back up anything. So doing backups wouldn't be affecting bandwidth used.

I don't know if this helps you out at all, but here goes.

Not sure if this helps either, but....

April of this year is when I switched to a new hosting company thus the reason for our stats to start that month.

Is there any evidence of robots(such as Googlebot, Yahoo, etc.) in the stats?

If this isn't enough info, let me know and I can try and dig for more info. It's look as though they are hitting my website, but not enough to effect bandwidth very much at all. But maybe I don't know enough to be able to decipher these stats well enough.

Question what "chat box" mod are you running?

1.9.9 Cyb - ChatBox

Think the chatbox is chewing up that much bandwidth??

Depending on what the shout box is set to its refreshing normally every 5 seconds for EVERY user who has the shout box on the page. This is easily 1000's of page views a minute. Try switching to Infernal Shout and enable the AOP system which only refreshes the page upon the box actually having some to update.

If you notice how php files are eating a major part of your bandwidth every time the shout box refreshes that's a php file being called.

Well...well.

That just might be the cause of it all. Hmm.

So Infernal Shout is the way to go??

Can I obtain info and the download of that on here?

Man....I sure do hope your right and the chat box is the cause of my issues!! My website isn't that big nor is it that active(I don't feel) to be chewing up the amount of bandwidth we are.

do you allow guests/unregistered users to view your photo alubms?

About a week ago, I shut down my photo gallery to try and pin point just where or what was chewing up my bandwidth. My bandwidth stats have not dipped a bit since doing that. I would have thought that for sure it was my gallery pulling it all, but it's not. Or atleast from what I can tell.

I however would like guests to view the gallery, but I guess that's something that I can determine later if I keep having issues.

Here are the stats on just when this bandwidth is being used. Based on what sss stated, it just might be the chat box creating all this.

It is 99% likely the shoutbox causing it. I use the exactly same kind of shoutbox, have the exact same web stats and checked, and it's usually the shoutbox which both uses most bandwidth and has most page loads/hits. Of course, there is a problem, in that Inferno vB Shout, while supposedly using less bandwidth, uses a ton of CPU instead, and shoutboxes in general are prone to high bandwidth consumption, so if you get too screwed, disable the thing.

Dang! I was afraid of that. I actually really like the chat box and so do my members.

I REALLY need to find one that doesn't chew up as much BW. So if any of you have one to suggest, I'm all ears!

I've got clients hosted on my VPS with shoutboxes installed that don't take up any where near that bw usage or CPU usage either. Try to disable the shoutbox for a few days, tell your users its under going some maintanence or something and check the stats then.

Inferno shout is the lowest period out there of all the shoutbox's for bandwidth usage. I cant judge CPU usage on my dedicated server as I didn't monitor CPU usage only bandwidth usage from before I installed it.

Try using this https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=147346 but make sure you use the AOP feature. What it does it is writes to php file the date/time of the last shout. Every X seconds it checks this file for a new post. If the time differs from the one on the client then it refreshes the shoutbox. Not only does this reduce CPU usage as it doesn't do any data pulling but it saves a ton of bandwidth since the shoutbox file itself is what is large and a 1kb file is much better then pulling a larger file.

Also remember to think about how many shouts you show in your box. This obviously increases server load by a lot as its more data it has to pull and also pushes more data to the client using up more bandwidth. Same with the archive.
