Show resized version of the profile picture as avatar picture?

Hi everybody, I would like to know whether it is possible to make a user's profile picture also show up as the avatar picture, but in a smaller size? Thanks!

I am bumping this because this request has come up many times on this forum without a solution... so maybe someone wants to start a mod for this? :)
