What is vBulletin-Glossary:

A professional glossary with features like :

crosslinking
attachments in entries
edit-history
synonyms
optional entryfields
vb-SEO compatible
etc.

Installation:

- Upload all files in 'upload' to your server

- set 777-permission for the following directories:
/vbglossar
/vbglossar/backup
/vbglossar/temp
- Import 'product-vbglossar.xml' in AdminCP as Add-On.

Right after the import of the productfile, go and set the usergroups. Afterwards edit the setting in AdminCP (Settings and Crosslinking). Now go to 'manage categories' and create the wanted cats.

Now the glossary should be configured and ready to use.

Update from version 1.0.0 to version 1.0.1/version 1.0.1 to version 1.1.x:

Follow the instruction of a new installation, also check the file permissions. After importing the product (overwrite: yes), check the grouprights and the settings of the glossary as there are some new features. In case the entries won't show up, please rebuild the datastore in the tools-section of the glossarin in admincp.

This addon has been developed by the follwing people (a-z): Andreas (http://www.vbulletin-germany.org/member.php?u=1), Captainslater (http://www.vbulletin-germany.org/member.php?u=22), G?rome (http://www.vbulletin-germany.org/member.php?u=19), Surviver (http://www.vbulletin-germany.org/member.php?u=91) and me. We spent every free minute for this project (coding, translation, tests, etc). Also MrD (http://www.vbulletin-germany.org/member.php?u=75) and Ragtek (http://www.vbulletin-germany.org/member.php?u=12) have tested during the time when this addon got developed.

In directory '/tools' you might find a usefull Script by G?rome (http://www.vbulletin-germany.org/member.php?u=19). User of vBCMS will find a module for their portal in directory 'vbcms' which shows a random entry of the glossary.

History:
1.0.0 - First version
1.0.0 PL 1 - Fixed Version by G?rome, users can't write unwnated entries anymore.
1.0.1 - overwork of the code, now working with datastore and datamanager. Also we included some small new features into the addon (e. g. revert entries, inlinemod, etc).
1.0.2 - overwork of the code, bugs removed, a lot of new features
1.0.3 - fixed more small bugs and added new functions (create threads for discussions, more options for crosslinking, better options for mods/admins, etc).
1.0.4 - bugfix-release.
1.1.0 - added more main-features (synonyms can be used now, optional use of entryfields within categories, PDF-functions included, vB-SEO kompatible, TOC-list, etc)

Languages:

By default you will find the complete germany and english phrases in the product (look at ZIP-file), done by Captainslater (http://www.vbulletin-germany.org/member.php?u=22). The turkish translation has been done by t?rkg?rc? (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/member.php?u=229191).

More translations are welcome and it would be nice if those will be published here.

Well, this is a glossary with Crosslinking for your Forum. While editing an entry you can use attachments just like as if you write a post in your forum. The glossary can be used with different categories.

Hm, somehow. What we are planning to try is to include a function which gives restrictions to users or even usergroups for specific entries. That would mean, that either the complete community can work on one entry or only a few people who were 'selected' by the author of the entry (well, of coz the mods/admins can do this aswell).

Actually we work on the bug fixes and some special stuff like vbcms-modules for example. While bugfixing we try to includes the wishes we're getting for that addon.

I only have one issue thus far. The crosslinking feature can hijack portions of existing links. It should be disabled if the text is within an existing link. This can be witnessed in the link below, where the portion of the previous link (The Shadow at the Bottom of the World) has a link to the glossary. Notice that the first segment of the text (Thomas Ligotti - ") still refers to the original link. Also note that the closing quotation mark has been stripped from the hyperlink and displays as normal text.

I have tested the process on a link which included only the glossary entry text, and it did not take over the link. Therefore, I assume the problem will only appear when a subset of the text is within a link which includes additional text within the description.

Strangely, the crosslink is not active when the text is presented while enclosed within quotation marks. The example above apparently was not following this rule due to the hyperlink. I would like to disable this rule as well, since I am using the glossary to catalog an author's body of work, and many of the stories are enclosed within quotation marks when referenced throughout the site.

There's a problem regarding search engines and so called "duplicate content". You are addressing the "showentry"-pages in at least 3 different ways:

Headlines on category pages within the glossary: http://www.myforum.com/vbglossar.php?do=showentry&catid=1&id=1234
"read more"-links on category pages: http://www.myforum.com/vbglossar.php?do=showentry&id=1234&catid=1 (the last to vars are switched)
I would suggest that you find a solution that there is only one url for a certain glossary-entry and therefore no duplicate content.

If you choose a certain letter from the "alphabet-table" within a certain category, the pagination is wrong. You are displaying the pagination for the whole category and not for a certain letter.

That doesnt have anything to with this addon being incompatible to vBaffiliate Links but is a logical thought when you know about the fact, that vBaffiliate Links forces his replace-routine on the global_start-hook. In this way the routines breaks everything coming along.

Using the global_start-hook for such a routine ain't good at all, actually we actually use the parser-hooks where those linking-routines belong to. We are not responsible for other peoples fault.

The last part of the navbar-breadcrumb seems to be a little bit confusing. Currently it looks like this in the category-view:

Important Security Issue: Googlebot is able to create glossary-entries!
I have noticed that "unregistered" users with the IPs 66.249.71.26 and 66.249.71.25 have been able to create numerous new Glossary entries. These entries don't have a name and no description, but they do exist in my database.
No I am asking myself:
1.) Why is it possible that unregisterd users are able to create new entries and insert data into mysql, even if I disallowed the guest-usergroup to create new entries?
2.) Why is it possible to create new entries with an empty title and description, no matter if we are talking about registered or unregistered users?

As long as these questions are not answered, I would advise everyone who is reading this to disable this addon immediately and to no longer make it avaible for download here as long as this security issue is not fixed.

Gérome just released Version 1.0.0 PL 1, users and guests cannot write unwanted entries anmore. Just upload all files to your server again (with overwrite), import the product and that's it.

There hasn't been any serious risk, everybody can calm down now.

Some bugs in this version :

1) Icon near crosslink does not appear, if crosslinked text begins of post.
2) Popup doesn't appear, if crosslinked text is in the only string of post (?)
3) Popup encoding must be the same as in main page, now different (my common encoding is windows-1251, but popup is shown in utf8 (?) )

I have a few (small) feature requests:

Forum-ID exclude-list: Provide an option to exclude certain forum-ids from crosslinking. This would be useful for me because I have some forum categories where I don't want any crosslinking.
Don't highlight the current glossary entry name in the description on the showentry-page again. This is unneccessary ;)
Include a "read more" link in the overlib-popup and/or add 3 dots at the end (...) to show to the readers more clearly that there is more text if they click on the link.

Any chance of modifying that vbcms module to work with vba cmps, same basic thing but works a little different. Also in the last version when I had all the crosslinking options the posts disappeared. They were there if you hit edit but invisible to normal users.

I haven't tried crosslinking in the new version. Otherwise working good thanks for the great mod!

I have installed and forgot to cmod folders prior to uploading the product. Crosslinking did not work.
I then have "brilliant" idea of uninstalling the product and if I wanted to reinstall it gave me error of tables being already created in database and did not install product.

Should I manually delete tables or is other way of doing it?

Hello. Great Mod, Hoping for it to be More Flexible on the Time to Choose in what Forum and in what Posts do I want to Include Crosslinkings.

One Question: On the Crosslinking "Active Pages" Options, I can see Four Options. Could you please Explain what do those Options mean and how do they Work?

Single Post: Is it to select crosslinking for a single post? How can this be done? (I tried but didn't find any option to activate the crosslinking on an individual post). :confused:

All Posts: I sow that on all New Posts and Edits the Crosslinking appeared. I'd prefer to be able to choose if I want to include Crosslinking or not, like to have an Option Below the Post and Click on it to Select it and then when Posting the Crosslinking to be Applied, or if I don't Select it then Nothing will happen, (like on the "Automatically parse links in text" Option that works Individually for each Post. :confused:

Private Messages? :confused:

Glossar? :confused:

It'd also be nice to Select which Usergroups can Crosslink and which ones Cannot. I can see Options for Accesing Categories, but would also be nice to have Usergroup Permissions for Crosslinking (I'm imagining my Posts all Crosslinked by any User and the process to Un-Crosslink is Hard (has to be done post by post).

For now I can see that if I Set "Enable Crosslinking" to Yes, "Enable Crosslinking Global" to NO, and in "Additional Page (THIS_SCRIPT)" I introduce showthread, then the Crosslinking is Displayed on the Words of the Threads without Editing the Posts, (which Happens if the Global Crosslinking is ON or when is Off and the Option "All Posts" is Activated).

I'd Appreciate More Complete Details about this Functions from the Developpers, of the Questions Posted on my Previous Post. :confused:

The problem with the crosslinking is nearby solved. We released version 1.0.2 last friday on vBGo and we will release 1.0.3 within the next few days. 1.0.3 will be more stable as 1.0.1/1.0.2, we fixed some major problems and added new functions.

Version 1.0.3 will be uploaded here as soon as we ZIP'ed the package. :D

We are actually working on the routine for crosslinking and we hope to fix those combinations and get the crosslinking even more stable. It's not easy to combine a good crosslinking-routine with vBulletin as there are a lot of things which need to be thought of (eg. the postcache, BB-Codes, URL's and so on...). As we care a lot about the quality of addons and keeping up the vB-standards, we needed to build a stable base first und improve complicated routines just like the crosslinking while still working on the addon.

I would love to enable this crosslinking only for specific groups ... if possible. If you set a category visible only for one group (as seen in picture above) crosslinking work only for this group?

Hm, I dont think that there is a conflict. The glossary doesnt support vBSEO yet, but there is no conflict.

I have installed the glossary, and everything seems to be working fine apart from the crosslinking.

Whenever anybody apart from an admin clicks on one of the links, it says that the user does not have permission to view the page. I've checked the settings in each usergroup and everything seems to be fine.

The weird thing is that all the usergroups are able to view the pages normally - ie, by going to the glossary pages and clicking on the individual links.

Is there a fix to this?

Version 1.0.3 is finished and captainslater does the translation right now. As soon as we managed the job, you'll find the bugfix in a soon released version 1.0.3

This is a really excellent mod and VBSEO integration would turn it into an incredible mod.

For those of you who are interested, here's what I did to get the glossary partially working with VBSEO:

1. Go to the custom rewrite rules in the VBSEO section of the control panel
2. Add the following code

'^vbglossar\.php$' => 'glossary.html'
'^vbglossar\.php\?do=showcat&catid=1$' => 'category-1.html'
'^vbglossar\.php\?do=showcat&catid=2$' => 'category-2.html'
'^vbglossar\.php\?do=showcat&catid=3$' => 'category-3.html'

Obviously you can replace the ***.html with whatever you like.

I've not figured out how to do this for the individual entries yet though.

Sorting where in the glossary do you mean? Sorting the entries or sorting the categories? :confused:

The routine for crosslinking is getting fixed in Version 1.1.0.

The next release, Version 1.0.4, will be a bugfix only, so the next major changes will take effect with 1.1.0.

Crosslinking means: After writing an entry into the glossary, you'll find so-called 'crosslinks' within your forum. E. g. your entry is called 'computer', you'll see this word linked to the glossary everywhere in your forum. While you push your mouse over such a link, you'll see a little preview of the glossary-entry, too. This funktion has a lot of features (on/off/preview/css-style/etc)...

Version 1.0.3 is a bugfix, more or less, including some new functions. As we're working on another routine for crosslinking, this should be fixed with the next release.

Look at the settings for crosslinkings, there you'll find it. Otherwise directly open the file './clientscript/overlib_vbglossar.js' and change the variables right at the beginning of the file.

The glossary strictly uses vB-standards. I supposed, that those 'spoiler-codes' simply don't support addons but get involved with normals threads/posts only.

I have a problem, is there a chance that I can do something about this glosar not to be active when ever I use the CODE editor?

I put links for rapidshare in code so they be killed but everytime I do this it will apear the glossar entries in there and will damage the link.

Any way for me to code this and fix the problem?

First off, I just want to say this is an awesome mod. Now I just need to get all of the information into it. :rolleye:

I do have a question. Is there a way to associate 2 words with 1 entry? I ask because I run a car site, so some of the main entries will be sensors. Some people will type out the word itself (oxygen sensor) whereas other will just use the abbreviation (O2 sensor). I could make 2 entries, but it would be better if there was a way to do an association of multiple words to a single entry.

Hm, actually I don't see a risk in this. There's no data in it which could cause a risk.

hmmmz and that should make it safe ? No it doesn't actually chmod 777 means world writable (anybody can write on a directory with this permission) so the fact your hack doesn't contain anything that possibly would cause an issue does not mean it is safe.You should always try to avoid chmod 777

Admin -> Style Manager -> (choose your style) -> Main CSS -> Crosslinking to glossary

That CSS Selector ist called .glossarylink, there you can make all the changed you want. :)

I already mentioned that, that was the area that was not picking up the changes. (glossarylink). I already have glossar enabled/checked in vbglossar > crosslinking settings area under "Active pages (THIS_SCRIPT)"

I am using the glossary for multipurposes. One of them is an English-My language dictionary. Problem is, with the cross linking, the post is invaded, with almost every single word, whether it's one letter 'a' or virtually every single word. Is there a way to disable cross linking for certain categories?

I've installed it and all I can say is that it works wonderfully (vB 3.7.2).

One suggestion however, in the Crosslink admin section, you can change the background color and font color for the popup. But the border is still blue by default. I had to change var ol_bgcolor="#FFCC66"; in overlib_vbglossar.js to do so. Maybe a good workaround would be to make font color and ol_bgcolor equal :)

Hm, I dont know exactly what you mean. You can moderate new entries, no doubt about that. But that has nothing to do with users deleting entries. You can simply turn that off within the grouprights.

I have a situation. I needed the glossary to work in Greek, so I hacked vbglossar.php to generate the Greek Alphabet:

I've located the string $i in the script and I've duplicated it using $i2 wherever it appears. For example after the code:

Vossi, thank you. Turned out that I didn't need to upload the file. I was a little confused at first with the language files. I've edited the product-vbglossar.xml to correct "Glossar" to "Glossary" wherever viewable on the client side (including Admin CP, Mod CP) as well as a few other spelling mistakes and English grammar issues that just don't translate well from German. I would like to e-mail you the new file so that you can review it and possibly use it for the current upload package.

The product works with Datastore, so there is one query left for showthread, in order to fetch the croslinkings, that' all.

And yes, about the bbcodes...thats the same I meant.

I have managed to reproduce this issue. I trust you will correct it in the coming version.

My Default editor is WYSIWYG, i type 'test'. I press the Bold button. The text changes to bold as it should. If I now press the Editor change button at the top right, it changes to:

Should be as easy as creating a plugin to add a query that selects a random entry from the database. Then, assign a hook location to the plugin and make the appropriate template modification to display it where you want it. That's actually an interesting idea, and even better if you could integrate the query into an existing forumhome query so you don't add an additional query.

I just updated and everything works fine. But I turned on crosslinking and the popup just came up blank, it didn't have the term text in it. I also noticed that I've got some short terms in there under one glossary. It would be nice to be able enable crosslinking after a minimum number of characters.
