how to have the same nav on portal as forum

I have the forum wit tons of links in th etop nav btu the portal ha sonly the start once. How do I change the header nav in portal to match the one in Forum. I have looked an dtried in templates vbportal but nothing happends.

I would also liek to have 800 width and header centered
but I cna only get that done in forum and nto in portal?

ps. also how do you insert a back gorund image behind the header behind th eheader logo that expands the length of the header?
