How do I add column to left of forums?

I notice that on some vb forums there appears to be an extra column on the left side that allows for the placement of custom images. Is this a mod? I am very interested in having graphics that relate to the topics. I think it just looks really good. Anyone have any ideas on how this is done?

Thanks for the reply but, I'm talking about an extra column inside the forums table. Not a side column outside of the forums table.
