View Full Version : Which Version?

When I checked big-boards.com, I see that they are still using version 3.6.x and still lot of sites insist to use old versions.
So please let me know which version you are using and why still old version?

I use v3.7 because I don't care what a "big board" runs.

Well, I imagine that most sites don't want to be a myspace clone, so 3.7 is just a waste of time and energy to install and maintain.. I still see a handful of 2.x installations, because even 3.x is jam packed with a lot of unneeded features for those looking for exactly what vB is. A forum.

I use version 3.7, because it suits my forum and my members like the features. The reasons though that big boards don't use 3.7 is likely because either:
1. They've modified the board to almost unrecognisable degrees for various features and style stuff, and it'd be a massive undertaking to upgrade, and either they can't be bothered or are slowly upgrading their forums.
2. They want mega simple features and such like.
3. License expired and they're using an owned license? Or maybe they just really don't care about the software because keeping the forum running is enough to worry about.

Very modified board, not worth to upgrade... some are running 3.6.8 wich success, besides 3.7x is just couple of hours newer than 3.6.10 PL3 Revision 10347 Chapter 228 Paragraph 25668 :D
and in 2 months we will have this same poll asking between 3.7x vs 3.8x :p

I'm surprised it isn't running vb 2.x still..lol
I'd say most big boards are running a modified version of 3.5 or 3.6

I'd imagine a lot of big boards will just wait for 4.0 before they consider a big fat upgrade.
But yeah, I'd imagine the main reason is not needing the new 3.7 features and having so many hacks it wouldn't be worth doing.
I only run a small forum and I like to keep up-to-date, so It's 3.7 for me, even if I don't use all the new features :)

Totally true. We're expiring 3.6 is what we hear, then we hear 5 different fixes for security leaks. 18 versions later and we still have security issues, seriously what's the point of continuing to spend money if there is always going to be another security leak?

One major problem with that idea... If there's a security problem in the version you're using AND the last version of 3.7, there not upgrading is putting the forum at risk of the security issue. Then, you're basically relying on them releasing a security patch for an old version...

This was what I was going for. There never has been a version without a security leak and there won't ever be one, so at the end of the day why buy vBulletin when you can have just as much of a security issue with any other software out there that does the same thing vBulletin has.
I'm not a fanboy, I think practically, and if vBulletin has as many security issues as the other software, that's probably why major companies just take free software versions. Like you said, why pay for something that is flawed?
Where did I say that ? Dont put words into my mouth please.
You outright said it. You don't use any features that came with 3.7 aside from maybe the image resizing, which is an addon here, so there was no point to upgrade.
Don't back out of statements that you already made.
I'm running 3.7 and will upgrade to the newest as soon as it comes out. I have albums turned off, cos it's a pointless feature when you have photoplog.
Exactly, when they add new programs it eliminates the need for either vbulletin.org's modifications that members make, or you can upgrade and have the same thing.
You use photoplog on your forum just as we do, you use 3.7 because that was what they were selling when you bought it. I have photoplog like you, so why should I upgrade?
No point.
Whats pointless about it...
What reason should anyone upgrade? To have the latest version with the latest security leak?
Features that we won't use or many of you like Paul have turned off, and Spank who has a mod already that does the same thing. Hello?

My PS2 worked for 7 years before it broke, it cost me 200 dollars, my first pc cost 1300 dollars and lasted 7 years. Nothing is perfect, but if you're going to be hacked, you're going to be hacked. There is no software anyone will ever make that I believe will be totally flawless.
Therefore I see no need to rebuy a software when I have a copy of it. That's the advantage and difference between the software and the hardware.
Also, I was wrong my PS 2 still works, on PS2 games only, so it's on it's last legs.
But I've bought the software, copied all my images, templates and codings, in effect we have backups, if we get hacked we can just reinstall everything rather than fighting through upgrades that we don't need.
I honestly went back and forth for awhile but I kept finding another solution with help from others, or coders that made it so that I just don't need another version of vBulletin, which is awesome. I would never get sucked in by it's initial popularity, it's not like Car Insurance you really don't need to keep upgrading.
That's a delusion to keep money flowing into there company.

I don't use the albums because I have photoplog, but there are quite a few features that are very useful 3.7 has that 3.6 doesn't have, even something that there are not mods for.
If you have a license and able to download the latest version, it's worth doing because everything in 3.6 is in 3.7, and you get more.

That's why upgrading isn't cool.
I can't even imagine all the coding he has to reapply on some test board to make sure it's all going to switch over properly.

It doesn't have everything 3.6 has, it has a completely different User Interface or User Profile page.
You get more, yet you're getting features that are at vb.org. I looked through and Zoints does tags and social networking and blogs, there is also a journal hack and it's basically the same thing. The image resizing was here before it was on 3.7 and the photogallery was here as well.
So I must be missing the things that 3.7 has that 3.6 doesn't. 3.6 is also going to eventually be terminated so whether you like it or not, buying when you did made it a natural choice to choose 3.7 over 3.6, because it won't be terminated or whatever in a few months or whatever date they gave for "end of life for 3.6".

Different look maybe, but anything in 3.6 is in 3.7 none of the actual features have been dropped AFAIK.

I'm pretty sure 3.6 being terminated never crossed my mind when I came to download, so it wasn't something that affected my choice. 3.7 will also be terminated at some point in the future, most likely at the same time as 3.6 as they'll drop support for vbulletin 3 in general at the same time most likely (just as they did with v2).
And if you're counting the stuff at vb.org, you'll have to take into consideration the mods that are available for 3.7. Not only that but most mod development goes into the newest version, so there will be no doubt plenty more things 3.7 will have that 3.6 doesn't have.

A neverending security problem makes continually purchasing something a bad investment. It actually promotes the use of free forum software rather than paying for something that is simply going to have more security leaks down the road.
I see you have a lot of faith in the vb coders here that made those modifications, thats a laugh.

One big thing about 3.6.X that people seem to be forgetting is that as of the end of next month, it is End of Life. This means no more versions, bug fixes or security patches for it. While we will try to continue supporting it, the answer to a support question may well be, "You'll need to upgrade to 3.7.x" to fix that."

I don't see why. All 3.7 specific options are completely disableable, it's likely more secure, and the newest additions better coded and it has more features and stuff for the typical buyer. Don't say that's going to annoying any big forums, because the last time I checked, early versions like version 1, version 2 and version 3-3.5 were end of life for a long time, yet it didn't stop anyone from using them...
