I'm a couple of updates behind now, but i'm frightened to do it, my whole style has been changed, templates have been changed, i'm using lots of hacks, addons and modifications, i'm sure i've even edited a few PHP files.

So now i'm scared to update incase my forums are messed.

What exactly stays, and what would be overwritten?

Just make sure you backup your database, thats the real important stuff. There are way to many things that are changed to list them all. You can go over to vbulletin.com and read all the release notes. I dont know what version you have. I have a very modified forum and I have had no major issues upgrading. Just go slow, backup, pay attention to what you are doing and you will be fine.

Join the club. I'm always terrified of updating. But I guess that's what backups are for.

You've been running vB since mid-'06, yes.
You've created a testvb, yes.
Test updating in your testvb, keeping copious notes. You'll find out it's a no-brainer, once you do a few test updates. Go for it. Pretty soon you'll be thinking, "Bring it!," looking forward to the next update.
