But having worked on my site for months, I can no longer afford to at this time, not can I afford to pay for the host.

I do want to return to the site at a later date.

I can download my site via ftp, but what about the database?

Is there any other details I should include to enable me to upload to new servers at a later date a resume where I left off?

Here's info from the manual on moving servers - Moving Servers (http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/moving_servers) It gives you a couple of options for making a backup of the database. You should then be able to download it to your harddrive. Depending on the size of the database, you may want to break it into smaller 'chunks' to save and then download.
