I'm just wondering if anyone added an extra thread attribute in a similar fashion and could give me some pointers on this. I've seen this feature in several places, including ****edcompany.com which looks similar to a ubb knockoff.
For example, in addition to a subject line, someone could add in a text attribute like "company name" or "sport." Easiest example is having a message forum to discuss topics of concern to several professions but you didn't want to separate them into forums of different professions but by category. E.g., a forum caetory might be "hiring policies" which would contain posts for all kinds of jobs and users could post in field one the profession ("medicine") and in field two the subject of the thread ("hospital hirings.")
Next, in the forum for "hiring policies", users could sort not only by date but also by profession so they could see either a list of threads in reverse chronological order of the last day posted but also sort by profession.
This feature is more important to me than the message icon, which in a way parallels what I'm hoping to do....
