View Full Version : End-User Options - Global "New Thread" Button in Navbar
sockwater
07-01-2008, 10:00 PM
This mod adds a New Thread button or link to the navbar so that your users can start a new thread with two clicks from anywhere on the forums. First they click New Thread, then they click on the forum they want to post in. The hierarchical list of forums should respect all forum permissions, and forums where the user can post are shown as a link.
Features:
Show/hide large New Thread button (Settings in the Global New Thread Button Options group)
Show large New Thread button as Text or the default vB New Thread button (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/external/2008/08/32.gif) (added v1.1)
Show/hide navbar New Thread link
Show/hide forum descriptions on the listing of forums
All HTML is in templates (scroll down to the temlates that start with gntb_)
All language is in phrases (they all start with gntb_)
The product can be enabled/disabled in the Product Manager, rather than adding the extra overhead of an on/off switch in the options
Easy installation: Import the products XML filehttps://vborg.vbsupport.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=83344&stc=1&d=1214960165

The new thread button needs to be a drop down menu that automatically check vs forum permisions otherwise u arnt saving any queries and minor bandwith.

Can you make a nicer New Thread button?
My original intention was to have the current "button" as an example, and you can edit the gntb_newthreadbutton template and make it look any way you want.
Bluidkiti (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/member.php?username=Bluidkiti) PMed me with a suggestion and what they did on their board, which is to use the default vB New Thread image (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/external/2008/08/32.gif). I have now included this as an option in the product. Just download and reinstall.

The new thread button needs to be a drop down menu that automatically check vs forum permisions otherwise u arnt saving any queries and minor bandwith.
You could have a dropdown menu, just like the forum jump menu, but if you wanted to check permissions and display a selective list of forums, you'd be adding at least one query (I think) to *every* pageview on your site.
The way it is currently set up does save clicks. The process to post is alway 2 clicks whereas currently, you have to go to the forumhome, click on a forum, then click new post (minimum 3 clicks, or more if the forum you want to post in is a sub-forum).
Also, the point isn't to save queries, it's to make a more logical user interface.
I'm going to look into the option of making it a popup menu as well. If it doesn't add a lot of overhead to all pageviews, it's a good idea. :)

It can be removed by goin' to:
ACP --> vBulletin Options --> vBulletin Options --> Global New Thread Button Options --> Show Large New Thread Button --> No
I just have mine in the sidebar, as a link "Post A New Question". See: http://www.techsupportteam.org/forum/

can i use this mod on 3.6.10 pl2 ?I don't see any reason it wouldn't work for 3.6.10. Can you give it a try and post back here to let us know how it went?
i updated hack and can not get this image (newthread.gif) to display on navbar ...It links to the default location for newthread.gif. If you have an image somewhere else, just edit the gntb_newthreadbutton template, and change $stylevar[imgdir_button]/newthread.gif to the URL to your image. Also, be sure you enable both Show Large New Thread Button and Show Large Button as Image in the settings.
Any chance you could add a line break between each forum name ?Sure, edit the gntb_forumbit template and add a <br /> right before the closing list tag </ul>.
How do I remove link from Navbar? Looks absolutely terrible on my theme,
www.irishrepublican.netUse the options (Global New Thread Button Options), where you can enable/disable both the navbar link and/or the navbar button (to the left of the breadcrumbs.) BTW, I look at your site, and I don't think it looks bad. :) But I guess it's subjective.

I can't believe this! Out of the 1st 3 posts - 2 were complaints - THAT SUX!
Anyway - thanx to the modification author SOCKWATER for sharing - I'd actually installed a similar mod that had the dropdown - was for 3.6.x and apparently the author isn't interested in making it compatible with the 3.7 series - Anyway... Thanx so much for the sharing ;)

Just a suggestion on possible button placement:
Find in navbar template:
<div class="navbar" style="font-size:21px;padding-left:6px;"><strong>$vboptions[bbtitle]</strong></div>
</if>
</td>
Add directly below:
<!-- Global "New Thread" Button -->
<td class="alt1">
<div align="center"><a href="$vboptions[bburl]/newthread.php" title="Post A New Thread"><img src="$stylevar[imgdir_button]/newthread.gif"></a></div></td>
<!-- / Global "New Thread" Button -->
Puts the button right to the left of "Logged in as ...." info - Up close and personal :P
Thanx again for the modification SOCKWATER - I was certainly looking for something just like this ;)

Uninstalled. My members when they get new information they click the new thread button without going into the actual section. So if their new information is posted, then they can't see it, so they post the new topic. Next thing I know, I have 6 topics talking about the same exact thing.
Do you think you can implement a way so that after they select the forum, it shows the latest X posts?

Yes.
Man, this is the best mod I've seen in a long time. Really helps the useability of my forum.
I've had a little blurb about "posting a new thread" in my sidebar that was previously linked to a FAQ that explained to newbies how to post a thread. They would click on it and not understand how to post a thread because they would skip over the text in the faq.
Just installed this and linked that same text to newthread.php and it's perfect!

I would be interested in this option also, my newthread.php does not appear to be following permissions, but even lists my otherwise hidden Mods-Only Forums and closed forums, etc.
Other than that, perfect, and I've nominated for MOTM! Thanks again!

It works fine for me. Try logging in as a regular user and viewing newthread.php. If you're logged in as an admin, you'll be able to see the moderator only forums.

OK, I take it back, the Mods Only forums are not showing now, but it does list all the archives and forums where posting is not allowed, and when you select a closed forum, no error is given, then the page just hangs when a post is submitted.
I just wish I could create a list of specific forums to show there, and exclude others, is all.... thanks again.

This is by design. The visible button convinces an unregistered user that it's easy to ask a question, so he/she decides to ask a question and clicks the button and then gets the login/registration page where they register for your forums. I think that's what we all want.

It works fine for me. I can see my hidden forums when I'm logged in as an admin, and if I log out or log in as a user from another usergroup, I see the appropriate forums for their usergroup.

sockwater, as you know, I love this add-on. Would it be difficult to update it so it only showed forums where you can post a new thread? It's a little confusing a if a user clicks the 'Announcements' forum and get's a permission error. You know how wretchedly inaccurate those can be in vB.

Hi,
Very nice mod. Thanks for offering it.
Allow me to point out a possible typo, if it hasn't already been mentioned.
In Global New Thread Button Options, the description provided (in version 1.1) for the Show Large New Thread Button setting is as follows:
<< Show a large New Thread button to the left of the breadcrumbs in the navbar. You may change how this button looks by editing the gntb_navbarbutton template. This will attempt to insert the HTML into your navbar. If it fails, try the navbar link above or manually insert a link to newthread.php in your navbar. >>
There doesn't appear to actually be a template called "gntb_navbarbutton," unless I'm missing something. (Maybe I am.) Is it possible that the correct template is "gntb_newthreadbutton"?
Thanks.

I have custom work I need done to this mod:
REQUEST 1: Columns
I have one category that has forums named A-Z. So that is 26 forums right there! So instead of a long one column list, can we get an option to select categories to be listed in columns instead. We would need to be able to pick the number of columns so that if the forum name was longer, a two column layout would be perfect. If the forum name was shorter more columns could be set without breaking theme.
REQUEST 2: Drop Menu Forum Selection
I have other forums in another category with longer names. I really need these forums to be listed in a drop menu instead of one long list on the page. As more forums are added the longer this page is growing and too much scrolling has to happen. With a drop menu selection box that is wide enough all other forums could be included in the drop menu instead. This would allow our entire site to be on one short page without the need to scroll down on a ever growing long page.
Conclusion: (Three Display Options Per Category)
So under each category we should be able to decide if we want one of three forum listing options:
Columns: multiple column listing (can select number of columns)
Drop Menu Selection: drop menu listing of forums
Default: simple list that is defaultAre you willing to make these changes for a fee for a 3.8x site? Are you able to handle this coding yourself or do I need to look for a third party coder?
